1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is riotous; and whosoever reeleth thereby is not wise.
1 O vinho é escarnecedor, e a bebida forte, alvoroçadora; todo aquele que por eles é vencido não é sábio.
2 The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger forfeiteth his life.
2 Como o bramido do leão, é o terror do rei; o que lhe provoca a ira peca contra a sua própria vida.
3 It is an honour for a man to keep aloof from strife; but every fool will be snarling.
3 Honroso é para o homem o desviar-se de contendas, mas todo insensato se mete em rixas.
4 The sluggard will not plow when winter setteth in; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
4 O preguiçoso não lavra por causa do inverno, pelo que, na sega, procura e nada encontra.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
5 Como águas profundas, são os propósitos do coração do homem, mas o homem de inteligência sabe descobri-los.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness; but a faithful man who can find?
6 Muitos proclamam a sua própria benignidade; mas o homem fidedigno, quem o achará?
7 He that walketh in his integrity as a just man, happy are his children after him.
7 O justo anda na sua integridade; felizes lhe são os filhos depois dele.
8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
8 Assentando-se o rei no trono do juízo, com os seus olhos dissipa todo mal.
9 Who can say: 'I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin'?
9 Quem pode dizer: Purifiquei o meu coração, limpo estou do meu pecado?
10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.
10 Dois pesos e duas medidas, uns e outras são abomináveis ao
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
11 Até a criança se dá a conhecer pelas suas ações, se o que faz é puro e reto.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
12 O ouvido que ouve e o olho que vê, o
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt have bread in plenty.
13 Não ames o sono, para que não empobreças; abre os olhos e te fartarás do teu próprio pão.
14 'It is bad, it is bad', saith the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
14 Nada vale, nada vale, diz o comprador, mas, indo-se, então, se gaba.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies; but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
15 Há ouro e abundância de pérolas, mas os lábios instruídos são joia preciosa.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge that is surety for an alien woman.
16 Tome-se a roupa àquele que fica fiador por outrem; e, por penhor, àquele que se obriga por estrangeiros.
17 Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
17 Suave é ao homem o pão ganho por fraude, mas, depois, a sua boca se encherá de pedrinhas de areia.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel; and with good advice carry on war.
18 Os planos mediante os conselhos têm bom êxito; faze a guerra com prudência.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips.
19 O mexeriqueiro revela o segredo; portanto, não te metas com quem muito abre os lábios.
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.
20 A quem amaldiçoa a seu pai ou a sua mãe, apagar-se-lhe-á a lâmpada nas mais densas trevas.
21 An estate may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
21 A posse antecipada de uma herança no fim não será abençoada.
22 Say not thou: 'I will requite evil'; wait for the LORD, and He will save thee.
22 Não digas: Vingar-me-ei do mal; espera pelo
23 Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
23 Dois pesos são coisa abominável ao Senhor , e balança enganosa não é boa.
24 A man's goings are of the LORD; how then can man look to his way?
24 Os passos do homem são dirigidos pelo Senhor ; como, pois, poderá o homem entender o seu caminho?
25 It is a snare to a man rashly to say: 'Holy', and after vows to make inquiry.
25 Laço é para o homem o dizer precipitadamente: É santo! E só refletir depois de fazer o voto.
26 A wise king sifteth the wicked, and turneth the wheel over them.
26 O rei sábio joeira os perversos e faz passar sobre eles a roda.
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the inward parts.
27 O espírito do homem é a lâmpada do Senhor , a qual esquadrinha todo o mais íntimo do corpo.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king; and his throne is upheld by mercy.
28 Amor e fidelidade preservam o rei, e com benignidade sustém ele o seu trono.
29 The glory of young men is their strength; and the beauty of old men is the hoary head.
29 O ornato dos jovens é a sua força, e a beleza dos velhos, as suas cãs.
30 Sharp wounds cleanse away evil; so do stripes that reach the inward parts.
30 Os vergões das feridas purificam do mal, e os açoites, o mais íntimo do corpo.
