1 As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth.
1 E quando Jesus passou, viu um homem que era cego de nascença.
2 So His disciples asked Him, »Rabbi, who sinned –this man or his parents– that he was born blind?«
2 E os seus discípulos lhe perguntaram, dizendo: Mestre, quem pecou, para que ele nascesse cego, este homem ou seus pais?
3 »Neither he nor his parents sinned,« answered Jesus, »but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him.
3 Jesus respondeu: Nem este homem pecou, nem seus pais; mas para que nele se manifestassem as obras de Deus.
4 We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work.
4 Eu devo fazer as obras daquele que me enviou, enquanto é dia; a noite vem, quando nenhum homem pode trabalhar.
5 When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.«
5 Enquanto eu estou no mundo, eu sou a luz do mundo.
6 After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him,
6 Tendo dito isso, cuspiu na terra, e fez lama com a saliva, e ungiu os olhos do homem cego com a lama,
7 »Go and wash in the pool of Siloam« –the name means `Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see.
7 e disse-lhe: Vai, lava-te no tanque de Siloé (que significa: Enviado). Portanto, ele foi no seu caminho, lavou-se, e voltou vendo.
8 His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, »Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?«
8 Portanto, os vizinhos e aqueles que antes tinham visto que ele era cego disseram: Não é este aquele que estava assentado mendigando?
9 »Yes it is,« replied some of them. »No it is not,« said others, »but he is like him.« His own statement was, »I am the man.«
9 Alguns diziam: Este é ele. E outros diziam: Ele é semelhante a ele; mas ele disse: Eu sou ele.
10 »How then were your eyes opened?« they asked.
10 Diziam-lhe, portanto: Como foram abertos os teus olhos?
11 »He whose name is Jesus,« he answered, »made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight.«
11 Ele respondeu e disse: Um homem chamado Jesus fez lama, e ungiu os meus olhos, e disse-me: Vai ao tanque de Siloé, e lava-te. Tendo ido e me lavado, eu recebi a visão.
12 »Where is he?« they inquired, but the man did not know.
12 Disseram-lhe, então: Onde está ele? Ele disse: Eu não sei.
13 They brought him to the Pharisees–the man who had been blind.
13 Eles levaram aos fariseus aquele que antes era cego.
14 Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath.
14 E era dia do shabat quando Jesus fez a lama, e lhe abriu os olhos.
15 So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. »He put clay on my eyes,« he replied, »and I washed, and now I can see.«
15 Então, outra vez os fariseus também lhe perguntaram como recebera a visão. Ele lhes disse: Ele pôs lama sobre os meus olhos, eu me lavei, e vejo.
16 This led some of the Pharisees to say, »That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.«»How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?« argued others.
16 Por isso, alguns dos fariseus diziam: Este homem não é de Deus, porque não guarda o dia do shabat. Outros diziam: Como pode um homem pecador fazer tais milagres? E havia uma divisão entre eles.
17 And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, »What is your account of him? –for he opened your eyes.«»He is a Prophet,« he replied.
17 Eles disseram novamente ao homem cego: O que dizes tu a respeito dele, daquele que abriu os teus olhos? Ele disse: Ele é um profeta.
18 The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him –that he had been blind and had obtained his sight– until they called his parents and asked them,
18 Mas os judeus não acreditaram a respeito dele, que ele tivesse sido cego e recebido a visão, até que chamaram os pais do que recebera a visão.
19 »Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?«
19 E eles perguntaram-lhes, dizendo: É este o vosso filho, que dizeis ter nascido cego? Como, pois, agora ele vê?
20 »We know,« replied the parents, »that this is our son and that he was born blind;
20 Seus pais responderam e disseram-lhes: Nós sabemos que este é nosso filho, e que ele nasceu cego;
21 but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it.«
21 mas como agora vê, não sabemos, ou quem lhe tenha aberto os seus olhos, nós não sabemos; ele já tem idade; perguntai a ele, e ele falará por si mesmo.
22 Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue.
22 Essas palavras disseram seus pais, porque eles temiam os judeus; pois os judeus já tinham combinado que, se algum homem confessasse ser ele o Cristo, fosse expulso da sinagoga.
23 That was why his parents said, »He is of full age: ask him himself.«
23 Portanto, seus pais disseram: Ele já tem idade; perguntai a ele.
24 A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, »Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner.«
24 Então, chamaram novamente o homem que fora cego, e lhe disseram: Dá glória a Deus! Nós sabemos que esse homem é um pecador.
25 »Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know,« he replied; »one thing I know–that I was once blind and that now I can see.«
25 Ele respondeu, e disse: Se é pecador ou não, eu não sei; uma coisa eu sei, que, havendo eu sido cego, agora vejo.
26 »What did he do to you?« they asked; »how did he open your eyes?«
26 E tornaram a dizer-lhe: O que ele te fez? Como ele abriu os teus olhos?
27 »I have told you already,« he replied, »and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?«
27 Então ele respondeu: Eu já vos disse, e não ouvistes; para que o quereis tornar a ouvir? Quereis vós, porventura, fazer-vos também seus discípulos?
28 Then they railed at him, and said, »You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
28 Então, eles o injuriaram, e disseram: Tu és seu discípulo, nós, porém, somos discípulos de Moisés.
29 We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from.«
29 Nós sabemos que Deus falou a Moisés; quanto a este indivíduo, nós não sabemos de onde ele é.
30 »Why, this is marvellous!« the man replied; »you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes!
30 O homem respondeu e disse-lhes: Porque aqui está uma coisa maravilhosa: que não sabeis de onde ele é, e ainda ele tem aberto os meus olhos.
31 We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens.
31 Agora nós sabemos que Deus não ouve a pecadores; mas, se algum homem é um adorador de Deus, e faz a sua vontade, ele nos ouve.
32 From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth.
32 Desde o princípio do mundo, nunca se ouviu que nenhum homem tivesse aberto os olhos de um que nasceu cego.
33 Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing.«
33 Se este homem não fosse de Deus, ele nada poderia fazer.
34 »You,« they replied, »were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do you teach us?« And they put him out of the synagogue.
34 Responderam eles e disseram-lhe: Tu nasceste inteiramente em pecados, e queres ensinar-nos? E expulsaram-no.
35 Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, »Do you believe in the Son of God?«
35 Jesus ouviu que o haviam expulsado, e achando-o, disse-lhe: Crês tu no Filho de Deus?
36 »Who is He, Sir?« replied the man. »Tell me, so that I may believe in Him.«
36 Ele respondeu e disse: Quem é ele, Senhor, para que eu possa crer nele?
37 »You have seen Him,« said Jesus; »and not only so: He is now speaking to you.«
37 E Jesus lhe disse: Tu já o tens visto, e é ele quem fala contigo.
38 »I believe, Sir,« he said. And he threw himself at His feet.
38 E ele disse: Senhor, eu creio, e ele o adorou.
39 »I came into this world,« said Jesus, »to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind.«
39 E disse-lhe Jesus: Eu vim a este mundo para juízo, para que os que não veem vejam, e os que veem se tornem cegos.
40 These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, »Are we also blind?«
40 E alguns dos fariseus que estavam com ele, ouvindo essas palavras, disseram-lhe: Nós também somos cegos?
41 »If you were blind,« answered Jesus, »you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!«
41 Disse-lhes Jesus: Se fôsseis cegos, não teríeis pecado; mas como agora dizeis: Nós vemos, portanto, o vosso pecado permanece.
