1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, greets the twelve tribes that are living abroad.
1 Eu, Tiago, escravo de Deus e do Senhor Jesus Cristo, envio esta carta às doze tribos espalhadas pelo mundo. Saudações.
2 My friends, whatever may be the temptations that beset you from time to time, always regard them as a reason for rejoicing,
2 Meus irmãos, considerem motivo de grande alegria sempre que passarem por qualquer tipo de provação,
3 knowing, as you do, that the testing of your faith develops endurance.
3 pois sabem que, quando sua fé é provada, a perseverança tem a oportunidade de crescer.
4 And let endurance do its work perfectly, so that you may be altogether perfect, and in no respect deficient.
4 E é necessário que ela cresça, pois quando estiver plenamente desenvolvida vocês serão maduros e completos, sem que nada lhes falte.
5 If one of you is deficient in wisdom, let them ask wisdom from the God who gives freely to everyone without reproaches, and it will be given to them.
5 Se algum de vocês precisar de sabedoria, peça a nosso Deus generoso, e receberá. Ele não os repreenderá por pedirem.
6 But let them ask with confidence, never doubting; for the person who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven here and there at the mercy of the wind —
6 Mas, quando pedirem, façam-no com fé, sem vacilar, pois aquele que duvida é como a onda do mar, empurrada e agitada pelo vento.
7 Such a person must not expect that they will receive anything from the Lord,
7 Ele não deve esperar receber coisa alguma do Senhor,
8 vacillating as they are, irresolute at every turn.
8 pois tem a mente dividida e é instável em tudo que faz.
9 Let a follower in humble circumstances be proud of their exalted position, but a rich follower of their humiliation;
9 O irmão que é pobre tem motivo para se orgulhar, porque é digno de honra.
10 for the rich will pass away ‘like the flower of the grass.’
10 E o que é rico deve se orgulhar porque é insignificante. Ele murchará como uma pequena flor do campo.
11 As the sun rises, and the hot wind blows, ‘the grass withers, its flower fades,’ and all its beauty is gone. So is it with the rich . In the midst of their pursuits they will come to an untimely end.
11 O sol quente se levanta e a grama seca; a flor perde o viço e cai, e sua beleza desaparece. Da mesma forma murchará o rico com todas as suas realizações.
12 Blessed is the person who remains firm under temptation, for, when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love him.
12 Feliz é aquele que suporta com paciência as provações e tentações, porque depois receberá a coroa da vida que Deus prometeu àqueles que o amam.
13 Let no one say, when they are tempted, “It is God who is tempting me!” For God, who cannot be tempted to do wrong, does not himself tempt anyone.
13 E, quando vocês forem tentados, não digam: “Esta tentação vem de Deus”, pois Deus nunca é tentado a fazer o mal, e ele mesmo nunca tenta alguém.
14 A person is in every case tempted by their own passions — allured and enticed by them.
14 A tentação vem de nossos próprios desejos, que nos seduzem e nos arrastam.
15 Then passion conceives and gives birth to sin, and sin, on reaching maturity, brings forth death.
15 Esses desejos dão à luz o pecado, e quando o pecado se desenvolve plenamente, gera a morte.
16 Do not be deceived, my dear friends.
16 Não se deixem enganar, meus amados irmãos.
17 Every good thing given us, and every perfect gift, is from above, and comes down to us from the Maker of the lights in the heavens, who is himself never subject to change or to eclipse.
17 Toda dádiva que é boa e perfeita vem do alto, do Pai que criou as luzes no céu. Nele não há variação nem sombra de mudança.
18 Because he so willed, he gave us life, through the message of the truth, so that we should be, as it were, an earnest of still further creations.
18 Por sua própria vontade, ele nos gerou por meio de sua palavra verdadeira. E nós, dentre toda a criação, nos tornamos seus primeiros frutos.
19 Mark this, my dear friends — Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry;
19 Entendam isto, meus amados irmãos: estejam todos prontos para ouvir, mas não se apressem em falar nem em se irar.
20 for human anger does not forward the righteous purpose of God.
20 A ira humana não produz a justiça divina.
21 Therefore, have done with all filthiness and whatever wickedness still remains, and in a humble spirit receive that message which has been planted in your hearts and is able to save your souls.
21 Portanto, removam toda impureza e maldade e aceitem humildemente a palavra que lhes foi implantada no coração, pois ela tem poder para salvá-los.
22 Put that message into practice, and do not merely listen to it — deceiving yourselves.
22 Não se limitem, porém, a ouvir a palavra; ponham-na em prática. Do contrário, só enganarão a si mesmos.
23 For, when anyone listens to it and does not practice it, they like a person looking at their own face in a mirror.
23 Pois, se ouvirem a palavra e não a praticarem, serão como alguém que olha no espelho,
24 They look at themselves, then go on their way,
24 vê a si mesmo, mas, assim que se afasta, esquece como era sua aparência.
25 but the person who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues to do so, not listening to it and then forgetting it, but putting it into practice — that person will be blessed in what they do.
25 Se, contudo, observarem atentamente a lei perfeita que os liberta, perseverarem nela e a puserem em prática sem esquecer o que ouviram, serão felizes no que fizerem.
26 When a person appears to be religious, yet does not bridle their tongue, but imposes on their own conscience, that person’s religious observances are valueless.
26 Se algum de vocês afirma ser religioso, mas não controla a língua, engana a si mesmo e sua religião não tem valor.
27 That religious observance which is pure and spotless in the eyes of God our Father is this — to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the world.
27 A religião pura e verdadeira aos olhos de Deus, o Pai, é esta: cuidar dos órfãos e das viúvas em suas dificuldades e não se deixar corromper pelo mundo.
