1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, greets the twelve tribes that are living abroad.
1 Tiago, servo de Deus e do Senhor Jesus Cristo, às doze tribos da Dispersão, saúde.
2 My friends, whatever may be the temptations that beset you from time to time, always regard them as a reason for rejoicing,
2 Meus irmãos, tende por motivo de grande gozo o passardes por várias provações,
3 knowing, as you do, that the testing of your faith develops endurance.
3 sabendo que a aprovação da vossa fé produz a perseverança;
4 And let endurance do its work perfectly, so that you may be altogether perfect, and in no respect deficient.
4 e a perseverança tenha a sua obra perfeita, para que sejais perfeitos e completos, não faltando em coisa alguma.
5 If one of you is deficient in wisdom, let them ask wisdom from the God who gives freely to everyone without reproaches, and it will be given to them.
5 Ora, se algum de vós tem falta de sabedoria, peça-a a Deus, que a todos dá liberalmente e não censura, e ser-lhe-á dada.
6 But let them ask with confidence, never doubting; for the person who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven here and there at the mercy of the wind —
6 Peça-a, porém, com fé, não duvidando; pois aquele que duvida é semelhante à onda do mar, que é sublevada e agitada pelo vento.
7 Such a person must not expect that they will receive anything from the Lord,
7 Não pense tal homem que receberá do Senhor alguma coisa,
8 vacillating as they are, irresolute at every turn.
8 homem vacilante que é, e inconstante em todos os seus caminhos.
9 Let a follower in humble circumstances be proud of their exalted position, but a rich follower of their humiliation;
9 Mas o irmão de condição humilde glorie-se na sua exaltação,
10 for the rich will pass away ‘like the flower of the grass.’
10 e o rico no seu abatimento; porque ele passará como a flor da erva.
11 As the sun rises, and the hot wind blows, ‘the grass withers, its flower fades,’ and all its beauty is gone. So is it with the rich . In the midst of their pursuits they will come to an untimely end.
11 Pois o sol se levanta em seu ardor e faz secar a erva; a sua flor cai e a beleza do seu aspecto perece; assim murchará também o rico em seus caminhos.
12 Blessed is the person who remains firm under temptation, for, when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love him.
12 Bem-aventurado o homem que suporta a provação; porque, depois de aprovado, receberá a coroa da vida, que o Senhor prometeu aos que o amam.
13 Let no one say, when they are tempted, “It is God who is tempting me!” For God, who cannot be tempted to do wrong, does not himself tempt anyone.
13 Ninguém, sendo tentado, diga: Sou tentado por Deus; porque Deus não pode ser tentado pelo mal e ele a ninguém tenta.
14 A person is in every case tempted by their own passions — allured and enticed by them.
14 Cada um, porém, é tentado, quando atraído e engodado pela sua própria concupiscência;
15 Then passion conceives and gives birth to sin, and sin, on reaching maturity, brings forth death.
15 então a concupiscência, havendo concebido, dá à luz o pecado; e o pecado, sendo consumado, gera a morte.
16 Do not be deceived, my dear friends.
16 Não vos enganeis, meus amados irmãos.
17 Every good thing given us, and every perfect gift, is from above, and comes down to us from the Maker of the lights in the heavens, who is himself never subject to change or to eclipse.
17 Toda boa dádiva e todo dom perfeito vêm do alto, descendo do Pai das luzes, em quem não há mudança nem sombra de variação.
18 Because he so willed, he gave us life, through the message of the truth, so that we should be, as it were, an earnest of still further creations.
18 Segundo a sua própria vontade, ele nos gerou pela palavra da verdade, para que fôssemos como que primícias das suas criaturas.
19 Mark this, my dear friends — Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry;
19 Sabei isto, meus amados irmãos: Todo homem seja pronto para ouvir, tardio para falar e tardio para se irar.
20 for human anger does not forward the righteous purpose of God.
20 Porque a ira do homem não opera a justiça de Deus.
21 Therefore, have done with all filthiness and whatever wickedness still remains, and in a humble spirit receive that message which has been planted in your hearts and is able to save your souls.
21 Pelo que, despojando-vos de toda sorte de imundícia e de todo vestígio do mal, recebei com mansidão a palavra em vós implantada, a qual é poderosa para salvar as vossas almas.
22 Put that message into practice, and do not merely listen to it — deceiving yourselves.
22 E sede cumpridores da palavra e não somente ouvintes, enganando-vos a vós mesmos.
23 For, when anyone listens to it and does not practice it, they like a person looking at their own face in a mirror.
23 Pois se alguém é ouvinte da palavra e não cumpridor, é semelhante a um homem que contempla no espelho o seu rosto natural;
24 They look at themselves, then go on their way,
24 porque se contempla a si mesmo e vai-se, e logo se esquece de como era.
25 but the person who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues to do so, not listening to it and then forgetting it, but putting it into practice — that person will be blessed in what they do.
25 Entretanto aquele que atenta bem para a lei perfeita, a da liberdade, e nela persevera, não sendo ouvinte esquecido, mas executor da obra, este será bem-aventurado no que fizer.
26 When a person appears to be religious, yet does not bridle their tongue, but imposes on their own conscience, that person’s religious observances are valueless.
26 Se alguém cuida ser religioso e não refreia a sua língua, mas engana o seu coração, a sua religião é vã.
27 That religious observance which is pure and spotless in the eyes of God our Father is this — to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the world.
27 A religião pura e imaculada diante de nosso Deus e Pai é esta: Visitar os órfãos e as viúvas nas suas aflições e guardar-se isento da corrupção do mundo.
