1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, greets the twelve tribes that are living abroad.
1 Tiago, servo de Deus e do Senhor Jesus Cristo, às doze tribos dispersas entre as nações: Saudações.
2 My friends, whatever may be the temptations that beset you from time to time, always regard them as a reason for rejoicing,
2 Meus irmãos, considerem motivo de grande alegria o fato de passarem por diversas provações,
3 knowing, as you do, that the testing of your faith develops endurance.
3 pois vocês sabem que a prova da sua fé produz perseverança.
4 And let endurance do its work perfectly, so that you may be altogether perfect, and in no respect deficient.
4 E a perseverança deve ter ação completa, a fim de que vocês sejam maduros e íntegros, sem lhes faltar coisa alguma.
5 If one of you is deficient in wisdom, let them ask wisdom from the God who gives freely to everyone without reproaches, and it will be given to them.
5 Se algum de vocês tem falta de sabedoria, peça-a a Deus, que a todos dá livremente, de boa vontade; e lhe será concedida.
6 But let them ask with confidence, never doubting; for the person who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven here and there at the mercy of the wind —
6 Peça-a, porém, com fé, sem duvidar, pois aquele que duvida é semelhante à onda do mar, levada e agitada pelo vento.
7 Such a person must not expect that they will receive anything from the Lord,
7 Não pense tal homem que receberá coisa alguma do Senhor;
8 vacillating as they are, irresolute at every turn.
8 é alguém que tem mente dividida e é instável em tudo o que faz.
9 Let a follower in humble circumstances be proud of their exalted position, but a rich follower of their humiliation;
9 O irmão de condição humilde deve orgulhar-se quando estiver em elevada posição.
10 for the rich will pass away ‘like the flower of the grass.’
10 E o rico deve orgulhar-se se passar a viver em condição humilde, porque passará como a flor do campo.
11 As the sun rises, and the hot wind blows, ‘the grass withers, its flower fades,’ and all its beauty is gone. So is it with the rich . In the midst of their pursuits they will come to an untimely end.
11 Pois o sol se levanta, traz o calor e seca a planta; cai então a sua flor, e é destruída a beleza da sua aparência. Da mesma forma o rico murchará em meio aos seus afazeres.
12 Blessed is the person who remains firm under temptation, for, when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love him.
12 Feliz é o homem que persevera na provação, porque depois de aprovado receberá a coroa da vida que Deus prometeu aos que o amam.
13 Let no one say, when they are tempted, “It is God who is tempting me!” For God, who cannot be tempted to do wrong, does not himself tempt anyone.
13 Quando alguém for tentado, jamais deverá dizer: "Estou sendo tentado por Deus". Pois Deus não pode ser tentado pelo mal, e a ninguém tenta.
14 A person is in every case tempted by their own passions — allured and enticed by them.
14 Cada um, porém, é tentado pela própria cobiça, sendo por esta arrastado e seduzido.
15 Then passion conceives and gives birth to sin, and sin, on reaching maturity, brings forth death.
15 Então a cobiça, tendo engravidado, dá à luz o pecado; e o pecado, após ter-se consumado, gera a morte.
16 Do not be deceived, my dear friends.
16 Meus amados irmãos, não se deixem enganar.
17 Every good thing given us, and every perfect gift, is from above, and comes down to us from the Maker of the lights in the heavens, who is himself never subject to change or to eclipse.
17 Toda boa dádiva e todo dom perfeito vêm do alto, descendo do Pai das luzes, que não muda como sombras inconstantes.
18 Because he so willed, he gave us life, through the message of the truth, so that we should be, as it were, an earnest of still further creations.
18 Por sua decisão ele nos gerou pela palavra da verdade, para que sejamos como que os primeiros frutos de tudo o que ele criou.
19 Mark this, my dear friends — Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry;
19 Meus amados irmãos, tenham isto em mente: Sejam todos prontos para ouvir, tardios para falar e tardios para irar-se,
20 for human anger does not forward the righteous purpose of God.
20 pois a ira do homem não produz a justiça de Deus.
21 Therefore, have done with all filthiness and whatever wickedness still remains, and in a humble spirit receive that message which has been planted in your hearts and is able to save your souls.
21 Portanto, livrem-se de toda impureza moral e da maldade que prevalece, e aceitem humildemente a palavra implantada em vocês, a qual é poderosa para salvá-los.
22 Put that message into practice, and do not merely listen to it — deceiving yourselves.
22 Sejam praticantes da palavra, e não apenas ouvintes, enganando-se a si mesmos.
23 For, when anyone listens to it and does not practice it, they like a person looking at their own face in a mirror.
23 Aquele que ouve a palavra, mas não a põe em prática, é semelhante a um homem que olha a sua face num espelho
24 They look at themselves, then go on their way,
24 e, depois de olhar para si mesmo, sai e logo esquece a sua aparência.
25 but the person who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues to do so, not listening to it and then forgetting it, but putting it into practice — that person will be blessed in what they do.
25 Mas o homem que observa atentamente a lei perfeita que traz a liberdade, e persevera na prática dessa lei, não esquecendo o que ouviu mas praticando-o, será feliz naquilo que fizer.
26 When a person appears to be religious, yet does not bridle their tongue, but imposes on their own conscience, that person’s religious observances are valueless.
26 Se alguém se considera religioso, mas não refreia a sua língua, engana-se a si mesmo. Sua religião não tem valor algum!
27 That religious observance which is pure and spotless in the eyes of God our Father is this — to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the world.
27 A religião que Deus, o nosso Pai aceita como pura e imaculada é esta: cuidar dos órfãos e das viúvas em suas dificuldades e não se deixar corromper pelo mundo.
