1 A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death is better than the day of one’s birth.
1 Uma boa reputação vale mais que perfume caro, e o dia da morte é melhor que o do nascimento.
2 Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for death is the end of every person, and the living should take it to his heart.
2 É melhor ir a funerais que ir a festas; afinal, todos morrem, e é bom que os vivos se lembrem disso.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of countenance the heart is made good.
3 A tristeza é melhor que o riso, pois aperfeiçoa o coração.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
4 O sábio pensa na morte com frequência, enquanto o tolo só pensa em se divertir.
5 Better to listen to the rebuke of the wise than for a man to listen to the song of fools.
5 É melhor ouvir a repreensão do sábio que o elogio do tolo.
6 Like the sound of thorns under a pot, so also the laughter of fools. This also is vanity!
6 O riso do tolo some depressa, como espinhos que estalam no fogo; isso também não faz sentido.
7 Surely oppression makes a fool of the wise, and a bribe corrupts the heart.
7 A extorsão transforma o sábio em tolo, e os subornos corrompem o coração.
8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning; ⌞better to be slow to anger than hot-headed⌟.
8 Terminar algo é melhor que começar; a paciência é melhor que o orgulho.
9 Do not be quick in your spirit to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.
9 Não se ire facilmente, pois a raiva é a marca dos tolos.
10 Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.
10 Não viva saudoso dos “bons e velhos tempos”; isso não é sábio.
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance; ⌞it benefits the living⌟.
11 A sabedoria é ainda melhor quando acompanhada do dinheiro; ambos são proveitosos debaixo do sol.
12 ⌞For wisdom offers protection like money offers protection⌟. But knowledge has an advantage—wisdom restores life to its possessor.
12 Tanto sabedoria como dinheiro dão proteção, mas somente a sabedoria preserva a vida.
13 Consider the work of God. For who is able to make straight what he made crooked?
13 Aceite o modo como Deus faz as coisas; afinal, quem é capaz de endireitar o que ele fez torto?
14 In the day of prosperity, rejoice! But in the day of adversity, consider! For God made one in place of another so that mortals cannot find out what will happen ⌞in the future⌟.
14 Desfrute a prosperidade enquanto pode, mas, quando chegarem os tempos difíceis, reconheça que ambos vêm de Deus; lembre-se de que nada é garantido nesta vida.
15 I have seen all these things in my vain life: Sometimes a righteous man perishes in spite of his righteousness, and sometimes a wicked man lives a long life in spite of his evil.
15 Vi de tudo nesta vida sem sentido, incluindo justos que morrem cedo e perversos que têm vida longa.
16 Do not be excessively righteous, and do not act excessively wise, lest you destroy yourself.
16 Portanto, não seja justo nem sábio demais! Por que destruir a si mesmo?
17 Do not act excessively wicked, and do not be a fool, lest you die before your time.
17 Tampouco seja perverso demais. Não seja tolo; por que morrer antes da hora?
18 It is good to take hold of the one and also must not let go of the other; for whoever fears God will hold both of them secure.
18 Preste atenção a estas instruções, pois quem teme a Deus evita os dois extremos.
19 Wisdom gives more strength to the wise than ten rulers who are in the city.
19 A sabedoria torna o sábio mais poderoso que dez líderes de uma cidade.
20 Surely there is no one righteous on the earth who continually does good and never sins.
20 Não há uma única pessoa na terra que sempre faça o bem e nunca peque.
21 Do not pay attention to everything people say, lest you hear your own servant curse you.
21 Não escute a conversa alheia às escondidas; pode ser que ouça seu servo falar mal a seu respeito.
22 For your heart knows that you also have cursed others many times.
22 Pois você sabe que muitas vezes você mesmo falou mal de outros.
23 All this I have tested with wisdom. I said, “I will be wise!” but ⌞it was beyond my grasp⌟.
23 Sempre me esforcei para que a sabedoria guiasse meus pensamentos e ações. Disse a mim mesmo: “Serei sábio”, mas não adiantou.
24 ⌞Whatever is—it is far beyond comprehension⌟. Who can discover it?
24 A sabedoria está sempre distante e é difícil de encontrar.
25 I set my mind to try to seek wisdom and the plan, and to know that wickedness is foolishness and that folly is delusion.
25 Procurei por toda parte, decidido a encontrar sabedoria e entender a razão dos acontecimentos. Resolvi provar a mim mesmo que a perversidade é tolice, e a insensatez, loucura.
26 I myself found that more bitter than death is the woman who is a trap, whose heart is a snare, and whose hands are bonds. The one who pleases God escapes from her, but the sinner is caught by her.
26 Descobri que a mulher sedutora é mais amarga que a morte. Sua paixão é um laço, e suas mãos são correntes. Quem agrada a Deus escapará dela, mas o pecador será pego em sua armadilha.
27 “Look! I found this,” said the Teacher, “while trying to find how the plan fits together.
27 “Esta é a minha conclusão”, diz o Mestre. “Descobri isso depois de analisar a questão por todos os ângulos.
28 What my heart sought, I did not find. Although I found one righteous man among one thousand, I did not find one upright woman among all these.
28 Embora tenha procurado repetidamente, ainda não encontrei o que busco. Entre mil homens, somente um é sábio; mas entre as mulheres não achei uma sequer!
29 Look! This alone I found: God made mankind upright, but they have devised many schemes.”
29 Foi isto, porém, que descobri: Deus criou os seres humanos para serem justos, mas eles buscaram todo tipo de maldade.”
