1 In that season, heard Herod the tetrarch, the fame of Jesus:
1 Naquele tempo Herodes, o governador da Galileia, ouviu falar a respeito de Jesus.
2 and he said unto his servantsThis, is John the Immerser,he hath arisen from the dead, for this cause, are the powers working mightily within him.
2 Então ele disse aos seus funcionários: — Esse homem é João Batista, que foi ressuscitado. Por isso esse homem tem poder para fazer milagres.
3 For, Herod, seizing John, had bound him, and, in prison, put him away,because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother;
3 Pois Herodes tinha mandado prender João, amarrar as suas mãos e jogá-lo na cadeia. Ele havia feito isso por causa de Herodias, esposa do seu irmão Filipe.
4 for John had been saying to him, It is not allowed thee, to have her.
4 Pois João Batista tinha dito muitas vezes a Herodes: “Pela nossa Lei você é proibido de casar com Herodias!”
5 And desiring, to kill, him, he feared the multitude, because, as a prophet, they held him.
5 Herodes queria matá-lo, mas tinha medo do povo, pois eles achavam que João era profeta .
6 But, a birthday feast of Herod taking place, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod;
6 No dia do aniversário de Herodes, a filha de Herodias dançou diante de todos, e ele gostou tanto,
7 wherefore, with an oath, he promised to give her, whatsoever she should ask for herself;
7 que prometeu à moça: — Juro que darei tudo o que você me pedir!
8 and, she, being led on by her mother,Give me (saith she) here, upon a charger, the head the Immerser.
8 Seguindo o conselho da sua mãe, ela pediu: — Quero a cabeça de João Batista num prato, agora mesmo!
9 And the king, though grieved, yet, because of the oaths and the guests, ordered it to be given;
9 O rei Herodes ficou triste, mas, por causa do juramento que havia feito na frente dos convidados, ordenou que o pedido da moça fosse atendido.
10 and sent and beheaded John in the prison.
10 E mandou que cortassem a cabeça de João Batista, na cadeia.
11 And his head was brought upon a charger, and given unto the maiden, and she brought it to her mother.
11 Aí trouxeram a cabeça num prato, entregaram para a moça, e ela a levou para a sua mãe.
12 And his disciples, going near, bare away the corpse, and buried him, and came and brought tidings unto Jesus.
12 Então os discípulos de João vieram, levaram o corpo dele e o sepultaram. Depois foram contar isso a Jesus.
13 And Jesus, hearing it, retired from thence in a boat, into a desert place, apart,and the multitudes, hearing of it, followed him on foot from the cities.
13 Ao saber o que havia acontecido, Jesus saiu dali num barco e foi sozinho para um lugar deserto. Mas as multidões souberam onde ele estava, vieram dos seus povoados e o seguiram por terra.
14 And, coming forth, he saw a great multitude,and was moved with compassion a over them, and cured their sick.
14 Quando Jesus saiu do barco e viu aquela grande multidão, ficou com muita pena deles e curou os doentes que estavam ali.
15 And, evening, arriving, the disciples came unto him, sayingThe place is, a desert, and, the hour, hath already passed,dismiss the multitudes, that they may go away into the villages, and buy themselves food.
15 De tardinha, os discípulos chegaram perto de Jesus e disseram: — Já é tarde, e este lugar é deserto. Mande essa gente embora, a fim de que vão aos povoados e comprem alguma coisa para comer.
16 But, Jesus, said unto them, No need, have they to go away,give, ye, them to eat.
16 Mas Jesus respondeu:
17 But, they, say unto himWe have nothing here, save five loaves and two fishes.
17 Eles disseram: — Só temos aqui cinco pães e dois peixes.
18 But, he, saidBring, them, to me, here.
18 — Pois tragam para mim! — disse Jesus.
19 And, giving orders that the multitudes should recline upon the grass,taking the five loaves and the two fishes,looking up into the heaven, he blessed; and, breaking, gave, the disciples, the loaves, and the disciples unto the multitude.
19 Então mandou o povo sentar-se na grama. Depois pegou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, olhou para o céu e deu graças a Deus. Partiu os pães, entregou-os aos discípulos, e estes distribuíram ao povo.
20 And they did all eat, and were filled,and they took up the remainder of the broken pieces, twelve baskets, full.
20 Todos comeram e ficaram satisfeitos, e os discípulos ainda recolheram doze cestos cheios dos pedaços que sobraram.
21 And, they who did eat, were about five thousand, men, besides women and children.
21 Os que comeram foram mais ou menos cinco mil homens, sem contar as mulheres e as crianças.
22 And straightway constrained he the disciples to enter into a boat, and be going before him unto the other side, while he dismissed the multitudes.
22 Logo depois, Jesus ordenou aos discípulos que subissem no barco e fossem na frente para o lado oeste do lago, enquanto ele mandava o povo embora.
23 And, dismissing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain, apart, to pray,and when, evening, came, alone, was he, there.
23 Depois de mandar o povo embora, Jesus subiu um monte a fim de orar sozinho. Quando chegou a noite, ele estava ali, sozinho.
24 Now, the boat, still many furlongs from the land, was holding off, being distressed by the waves,for, the wind, was, contrary.
24 Naquele momento o barco já estava no meio do lago. E as ondas batiam com força no barco porque o vento soprava contra ele.
25 And, in the fourth watch of the night, he came unto them, walking upon the sea.
25 Já de madrugada, entre as três e as seis horas, Jesus foi até lá, andando em cima da água.
26 And, the disciples, seeing him, upon the lake walking, were troubled,sayingIt is, a ghost; and, by reason of their fear, they cried out.
26 Quando os discípulos viram Jesus andando em cima da água, ficaram apavorados e exclamaram: — É um fantasma! E gritaram de medo.
27 And, straightway, Jesus spake unto them, sayingTake courage! it is, I,be not afraid.
27 Nesse instante Jesus disse:
28 And, making answer, Peter said unto him,Lord! if it is, thou, bid me come unto thee, upon the waters.
28 Então Pedro disse: — Se é o senhor mesmo, mande que eu vá andando em cima da água até onde o senhor está.
29 And, he, saidCome! And, descending from the boat, Peter walked upon the waters, and came unto Jesus.
29 — Venha! — respondeu Jesus. Pedro saiu do barco e começou a andar em cima da água, em direção a Jesus.
30 But, seeing the wind, he was affrighted, and, beginning to sink, cried out, sayingLord! save me!
30 Porém, quando sentiu a força do vento, ficou com medo e começou a afundar. Então gritou: — Socorro, Senhor!
31 And, straightway, Jesus, stretching forth his hand, laid hold upon him and saith unto himO little-of-faith! why didst thou doubt?
31 Imediatamente Jesus estendeu a mão, segurou Pedro e disse:
32 And, when they came up into the boat, the wind abated.
32 Então os dois subiram no barco, e o vento se acalmou.
33 And, they in the boat, bowed down to him, sayingTruly, Gods Son, thou art!
33 E os discípulos adoraram Jesus, dizendo: — De fato, o senhor é o Filho de Deus!
34 And, going across, they came up the land, into Gennesaret.
34 Jesus e os discípulos atravessaram o lago e chegaram à região de Genesaré.
35 And, recognizing him, the men of that place, sent out into all that region, and they brought unto him all who were sick;
35 Ali o povo reconheceu Jesus e avisou todos os doentes das regiões vizinhas. Então muitas pessoas levaram doentes a ele,
36 and were beseeching him , that they might, only, touch the border of his mantle, and, as many as touched, were made quite well.
36 pedindo que deixasse que os doentes pelo menos tocassem na barra da sua roupa. E todos os que tocavam nela ficavam curados.
