1 Samuel 8

1 When Samuel was old, he appointed his sons judges over Israel.
1 E sucedeu que, tendo Samuel envelhecido, constituiu a seus filhos por juízes sobre Israel.
2 The name of his firstborn son was Joel. He named his second son Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.
2 E o nome do seu filho primogênito era Joel, e o nome do seu segundo, Abia; e foram juízes em Berseba.
3 The sons did not follow their fathers example but turned to dishonest ways of making money. They took bribes and denied people justice.
3 Porém seus filhos não andaram pelos caminhos dele, antes se inclinaram à avareza, e aceitaram suborno, e perverteram o direito.
4 One day the nations elders came to Samuel at Ramah.
4 Então todos os anciãos de Israel se congregaram, e vieram a Samuel, a Ramá,
5 They said: »You are an old man. You set a good example for your sons. But they have not followed it. Now we want a king to be our leader like all the other nations. Choose one for us!«
5 E disseram-lhe: Eis que já estás velho, e teus filhos não andam pelos teus caminhos; constitui-nos, pois, agora um rei sobre nós, para que ele nos julgue, como o têm todas as nações.
6 Samuel was upset to hear the leaders say they wanted a king. So he prayed about it.
6 Porém esta palavra pareceu mal aos olhos de Samuel, quando disseram: Dá-nos um rei, para que nos julgue. E Samuel orou ao Senhor.
7 Jehovah answered: »Samuel, do everything they want you to do. I am really the one they have rejected as their king.
7 E disse o Senhor a Samuel: Ouve a voz do povo em tudo quanto te dizem, pois não te têm rejeitado a ti, antes a mim me têm rejeitado, para eu não reinar sobre eles.
8 »Ever since the day I rescued my people from Egypt, they have turned from me to worship idols. Now they are turning away from you.
8 Conforme a todas as obras que fizeram desde o dia em que os tirei do Egito até ao dia de hoje, a mim me deixaram, e a outros deuses serviram, assim também fazem a ti.
9 »Listen to them. But be sure to warn them and tell them about the behavior and rights of a king who rules over them.«
9 Agora, pois, ouve à sua voz, porém protesta-lhes solenemente, e declara-lhes qual será o costume do rei que houver de reinar sobre eles.
10 Then Samuel told the people who had asked him for a king everything Jehovah said.
10 E falou Samuel todas as palavras do Senhor ao povo, que lhe pedia um rei.
11 Samuel said: »These are the rights of a king: He will draft your sons and make them serve on his chariots and horses, and make them run ahead of his chariots.
11 E disse: Este será o costume do rei que houver de reinar sobre vós; ele tomará os vossos filhos, e os empregará nos seus carros, e como seus cavaleiros, para que corram adiante dos seus carros.
12 »He will appoint them to be his officers over one thousand or over fifty soldiers. He will have them plow his ground and harvest his crops. He will require them to make weapons and equipment for his chariots.
12 E os porá por chefes de mil, e de cinqüenta; e para que lavrem a sua lavoura, e façam a sua sega, e fabriquem as suas armas de guerra e os petrechos de seus carros.
13 »He will take your daughters from you and force them to make perfumes, cook, and bake.
13 E tomará as vossas filhas para perfumistas, cozinheiras e padeiras.
14 »He will take away the best of your fields, vineyards, and olive orchards and give them to his officials.
14 E tomará o melhor das vossas terras, e das vossas vinhas, e dos vossos olivais, e os dará aos seus servos.
15 »He will take a tenth of your grain and wine and give it to his aids and officials.
15 E as vossas sementes, e as vossas vinhas dizimará, para dar aos seus oficiais, e aos seus servos.
16 »He will confiscate your male and female slaves, your best cattle, and your donkeys for his own use.
16 Também os vossos servos, e as vossas servas, e os vossos melhores moços, e os vossos jumentos tomará, e os empregará no seu trabalho.
17 »He will take a tenth of your flocks. In addition, you will be his servants.
17 Dizimará o vosso rebanho, e vós lhe servireis de servos.
18 »You will cry out because of the king whom you have chosen for yourselves. Jehovah will not answer you when that day comes.«
18 Então naquele dia clamareis por causa do vosso rei, que vós houverdes escolhido; mas o Senhor não vos ouvirá naquele dia.
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. They said: »We want a king!
19 Porém o povo não quis ouvir a voz de Samuel; e disseram: Não, mas haverá sobre nós um rei.
20 »We want to be like other nations, with our own king to rule us and to lead us out to war and to fight our battles.«
20 E nós também seremos como todas as outras nações; e o nosso rei nos julgará, e sairá adiante de nós, e fará as nossas guerras.
21 Samuel listened to everything they said. Then he repeated it to Jehovah.
21 Ouvindo, pois, Samuel todas as palavras do povo, as repetiu aos ouvidos do Senhor.
22 Jehovah answered: »Do what they want. Give them a king.« Then Samuel told all the men of Israel to go back home.
22 Então o Senhor disse a Samuel: Dá ouvidos à sua voz, e constitui-lhes rei. Então Samuel disse aos homens de Israel: Volte cada um à sua cidade.
