¹ Afterwards Jesus began to teach by the seaside, and a vast multitude of people gathered about him, so that he went on board a boat on the sea, and sat there, while all the people stayed on shore, at the waters edge.

¹ Jesus começou a ensinar outra vez à beira-mar. E uma numerosa multidão se reuniu em volta dele, de modo que entrou num barco, onde se assentou, afastando-se da praia. E todo o povo estava à beira-mar, na praia.

² Then he began teaching them in parables many things. In his teaching he said to them.

² Assim, ensinava-lhes muitas coisas por parábolas e, durante o seu ensino, dizia:

³ "Listen! the Sower once went out to sow,

³ — Escutem! Eis que o semeador saiu a semear.

⁴ and as he sowed, it happened that some seed fell on the road, and birds came and picked it up;

⁴ E, ao semear, uma parte caiu à beira do caminho, e vieram as aves e a comeram.

⁵ some other seed fell on stony soil, where it had not much earth; and it sprang up quickly because it had no depth of soil,

⁵ Outra parte caiu em solo rochoso, onde a terra era pouca, e logo nasceu, visto não ser profunda a terra.

⁶ but when the sun rose it was scorched and withered away because it had no root.

⁶ Saindo, porém, o sol, a queimou; e, porque não tinha raiz, secou-se.

⁷ Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked it, so that it yielded no crop.

⁷ Outra parte caiu entre os espinhos; e os espinhos cresceram e a sufocaram, e não deu fruto.

⁸ But some seed fell into good soil and yielded a crop that sprang up and increased, yielding thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold.

⁸ Outra, enfim, caiu em boa terra e deu fruto; a semente brotou, cresceu e produziu a trinta, a sessenta e a cem por um.

⁹ "Any one who has ears to hear," he added, "let him listen to this."

⁹ E Jesus acrescentou:

¹⁰ When he was alone his followers and the Twelve began asking about the parables.

¹⁰ Quando Jesus ficou só, os que estavam junto dele com os doze começaram a lhe fazer perguntas a respeito das parábolas.

¹¹ He went on to say to them. "The secret truth concerning the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to those outside everything is told in parables,

¹¹ Jesus disse a eles:

¹² so that, "for all their looking they may not see, and for all their hearing, they may not understand, lest perchance they should turn and be pardoned.

¹² para que, vendo, vejam e não percebam; e, ouvindo, ouçam e não entendam; para que não venham a converter-se e sejam perdoados.

¹³ "You do not understand this parable," said Jesus. "Then how will you understand the other parables?

¹³ Então Jesus lhes perguntou:

¹⁴ "What the Sower sows is the Word. There are those on the wayside where the Word is sown.

¹⁴ O semeador semeia a palavra.

¹⁵ As soon as they hear it, Satan immediately comes and snatches away the Word which has been sown in them.

¹⁵ Estes são os da beira do caminho, onde a palavra é semeada: quando a ouvem, logo Satanás vem e tira a palavra semeada neles.

¹⁶ And like the sowing upon stony ground are those who, whenever they hear the Word, at once receive it with joy,

¹⁶ E estes são os semeados em solo rochoso, os quais, ouvindo a palavra, logo a recebem com alegria.

¹⁷ but because they have no root in themselves they last for a time; but when suffering or persecution ensues because of the Word, they at once fall away.

¹⁷ Mas eles não têm raiz em si mesmos, sendo de pouca duração. Quando chega a angústia ou a perseguição por causa da palavra, logo se escandalizam.

¹⁸ There are others who are sown among thorns.

¹⁸ Os outros, os semeados entre os espinhos, são os que ouvem a palavra,

¹⁹ When they have heard the Word, the anxieties of life and the snares of wealth, and all sorts of other ambitions, come in to choke the Word, so that it proves unfruitful.

¹⁹ mas as preocupações deste mundo, a fascinação da riqueza e outras ambições aparecem e sufocam a palavra, e ela fica infrutífera.

²⁰ But those, on the other hand, who were sown on that good soil, are those who listen to the Word, and welcome it, and bear fruit, thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold."

²⁰ Os que foram semeados em boa terra são aqueles que ouvem a palavra e a recebem, frutificando a trinta, a sessenta e a cem por um.

²¹ He went on to say. "Is the lamp brought in to be put under the bushel or the bed? Is it not rather to be put on the lamp-stand?

²¹ Jesus também lhes disse:

²² There is nothing hidden except what is to be disclosed, and nothing concealed except what is to be revealed.

²² Porque não há nada oculto, senão para ser manifesto; e nada escondido, senão para ser revelado.

²³ If any man has ears to hear, let him hear."

²³ Se alguém tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça.

²⁴ And he said to them. "Take heed what you hear. With what measure you measure it will be measured to you, and more will be given to you.

²⁴ Então lhes disse:

²⁵ For he who holds, to him will more be given, and he who holds not, from him will be taken even what he holds." "It is with the kingdom of God," he continued, "as if a man should have sown seed in the earth;

²⁵ Pois ao que tem, mais será dado; e, ao que não tem, até o que tem lhe será tirado.

²⁶ — ausente —

²⁶ Jesus disse ainda:

²⁷ night and day he sleeps and wakes while the seed is sprouting and growing tall, he knows not how.

²⁷ Ele dorme e acorda, de noite e de dia, e a semente germina e cresce, sem que ele saiba como.

²⁸ Of its own accord the earth bears its crops; first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.

²⁸ A terra por si mesma frutifica: primeiro aparece a planta, depois, a espiga, e, por fim, o grão cheio na espiga.

²⁹ Then as soon as the crop is ready the man has the sickle put in at once, because harvest-time is come.

²⁹ E, quando o fruto já está maduro, logo manda cortar com a foice, porque chegou a colheita.

³⁰ "To what shall we compare the kingdom of God?" he said again. "in what parable shall we set it forth?

³⁰ Disse mais:

³¹ It is like a mustard-seed, which, when sown in the soil, is the smallest seed in the world;

³¹ Ele é como um grão de mostarda, que, quando semeado, é a menor de todas as sementes sobre a terra;

³² yet when sown shoots up and becomes larger than any plant, sending out such branches that the wild birds build their nests under its shadow."

³² mas, uma vez semeada, cresce e se torna maior do que todas as hortaliças; cria ramos tão grandes, que as aves do céu podem se aninhar à sua sombra.

³³ With many such illustrations Jesus used to tell his message to people as far as they were able to receive it;

³³ E com muitas parábolas semelhantes Jesus lhes expunha a palavra, conforme podiam compreendê-la.

³⁴ and to them it was his practice never to speak except in parables. But he used to explain everything in private to his disciples.

³⁴ E sem parábolas não lhes falava; tudo, porém, explicava em particular aos seus próprios discípulos.

³⁵ On the evening of that same day Jesus said to them, "Let us go across to the other side."

³⁵ Naquele dia, sendo já tarde, Jesus disse aos discípulos:

³⁶ So, leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them just as he was in the boat; and the other boats were with him.

³⁶ E eles, despedindo a multidão, o levaram assim como estava, no barco; e outros barcos o seguiam.

³⁷ But a great gale of wind came up, and the waves were dashing into the boat so that it began to fill.

³⁷ Ora, levantou-se grande temporal de vento, e as ondas se arremessavam contra o barco, de modo que o mesmo já estava se enchendo de água.

³⁸ Now he himself was sleeping on the cushion in the stern, so they woke him up, saying, "Master, do you not care if we perish?"

³⁸ E Jesus estava na popa, dormindo sobre o travesseiro. Os discípulos o acordaram e lhe disseram: — Mestre, o senhor não se importa que pereçamos?

³⁹ And he awoke, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!"

³⁹ E ele, despertando, repreendeu o vento e disse ao mar: O vento se aquietou, e tudo ficou bem calmo.

⁴⁰ The wind fell, and there ensued a great calm. Then he said to them. "Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?"

⁴⁰ Então Jesus lhes perguntou:

⁴¹ Then they were awestruck, and said one to another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey him!"

⁴¹ E eles, possuídos de grande temor, diziam uns aos outros: — Quem é este que até o vento e o mar lhe obedecem?
