1 For every thing there is a season; and a proper time is for every pursuit under the heavens.
1 Tudo neste mundo tem o seu tempo; cada coisa tem a sua ocasião.
2 There is a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what hath been planted;
2 Há tempo de nascer e tempo de morrer; tempo de plantar e tempo de arrancar;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
3 tempo de matar e tempo de curar; tempo de derrubar e tempo de construir.
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
4 Há tempo de ficar triste e tempo de se alegrar; tempo de chorar e tempo de dançar;
5 A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather up stones; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embracing;
5 tempo de espalhar pedras e tempo de ajuntá-las; tempo de abraçar e tempo de afastar.
6 A time to seek, and a time to let things be lost; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
6 Há tempo de procurar e tempo de perder; tempo de economizar e tempo de desperdiçar;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
7 tempo de rasgar e tempo de remendar; tempo de ficar calado e tempo de falar.
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
8 Há tempo de amar e tempo de odiar; tempo de guerra e tempo de paz.
9 What profit hath now he that worketh in that wherein he toileth?
9 O que é que a pessoa ganha com todo o seu trabalho?
10 I have seen the employment, which God hath given to the sons of men to busy themselves therewith.
10 Eu tenho visto todo o trabalho que Deus dá às pessoas para que fiquem ocupadas.
11 Every thing hath he made beautiful in its proper time: he hath also placed the eternity in their heart, without a mans being able to find out the work that God hath made from the beginning to the end.
11 Deus marcou o tempo certo para cada coisa. Ele nos deu o desejo de entender as coisas que já aconteceram e as que ainda vão acontecer, porém não nos deixa compreender completamente o que ele faz.
12 I know that there is nothing good inherent in them, but for every one to rejoice and to do what is good during all his life.
12 Então entendi que nesta vida tudo o que a pessoa pode fazer é procurar ser feliz e viver o melhor que puder.
13 For also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy what is good for all his toil, is likewise a gift of God.
13 Todos nós devemos comer e beber e aproveitar bem aquilo que ganhamos com o nosso trabalho. Isso é um presente de Deus.
14 I know that whatsoever God doth, that will be for ever; to it nothing can be added, and from it there is nothing to be diminished: and God hath so made it, that men should be afraid of him.
14 Eu sei que tudo o que Deus faz dura para sempre; não podemos acrescentar nada, nem tirar nada. E uma coisa que Deus faz é levar as pessoas a temê-lo .
15 That which hath been hath long since appeared again; and what is to be hath already been; and God seeketh again that which is sped away.
15 Tudo o que acontece ou que pode acontecer já aconteceu antes. Deus faz com que uma coisa que acontece torne a acontecer.
16 And moreover I have seen under the sun, that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness; and that in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness.
16 Neste mundo eu também reparei o seguinte: no lugar onde deviam estar a justiça e o direito, o que a gente encontra é a maldade.
17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time for every pursuit; and on account of every deed there will he judge.
17 Então pensei assim: “Deus julgará tanto os bons como os maus porque tudo o que se passa neste mundo, tudo o que a gente faz, acontece na hora que tem de acontecer.”
18 I said in my heart concerning the speaking of the sons of men, that God might make it clear to them, and that they might see that they by themselves are but beasts.
18 Aí cheguei à conclusão de que Deus está pondo as pessoas à prova para que elas vejam que não são melhores do que os animais.
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even the same thing befalleth them; as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one kind of spirit: so that the preeminence of man above the beast is nought; for all is vanity.
19 No fim das contas, o mesmo que acontece com as pessoas acontece com os animais. Tanto as pessoas como os animais morrem. O ser humano não leva nenhuma vantagem sobre o animal, pois os dois têm de respirar para viver. Como se vê, tudo é ilusão,
20 Every thing goeth unto one place: every thing came from the dust, and every thing returneth to the dust.
20 pois tanto um como o outro irão para o mesmo lugar, isto é, o pó da terra. Tanto um como o outro vieram de lá e voltarão para lá.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of the sons of man that ascendeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that descendeth downward to the earth?
21 Como é que alguém pode ter a certeza de que o sopro de vida do ser humano vai para cima e que o sopro de vida do animal desce para a terra?
22 And so did I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion; for who can bring him to look with pleasure on what will be after him?
22 Assim, eu compreendi que não há nada melhor do que a gente ter prazer no trabalho. Esta é a nossa recompensa. Pois como é que podemos saber o que vai acontecer depois da nossa morte?
