1 For every thing there is a season; and a proper time is for every pursuit under the heavens.
1 Tudo tem o seu tempo determinado, e há tempo para todo propósito debaixo do céu:
2 There is a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what hath been planted;
2 há tempo de nascer e tempo de morrer; tempo de plantar e tempo de arrancar o que se plantou;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
3 tempo de matar e tempo de curar; tempo de derrubar e tempo de construir;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
4 tempo de chorar e tempo de rir; tempo de prantear e tempo de saltar de alegria;
5 A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather up stones; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embracing;
5 tempo de espalhar pedras e tempo de ajuntar pedras; tempo de abraçar e tempo de deixar de abraçar;
6 A time to seek, and a time to let things be lost; a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
6 tempo de procurar e tempo de perder; tempo de guardar e tempo de jogar fora;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
7 tempo de rasgar e tempo de costurar; tempo de ficar calado e tempo de falar;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
8 tempo de amar e tempo de odiar; tempo de guerra e tempo de paz.
9 What profit hath now he that worketh in that wherein he toileth?
9 Que proveito tem o trabalhador naquilo com que se afadiga?
10 I have seen the employment, which God hath given to the sons of men to busy themselves therewith.
10 Vi o trabalho que Deus impôs aos filhos dos homens, para com ele os afligir.
11 Every thing hath he made beautiful in its proper time: he hath also placed the eternity in their heart, without a mans being able to find out the work that God hath made from the beginning to the end.
11 Deus fez tudo formoso no seu devido tempo. Também pôs a eternidade no coração do ser humano, sem que este possa descobrir as obras que Deus fez desde o princípio até o fim.
12 I know that there is nothing good inherent in them, but for every one to rejoice and to do what is good during all his life.
12 Sei que não há nada melhor para o ser humano do que alegrar-se e aproveitar a vida ao máximo.
13 For also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy what is good for all his toil, is likewise a gift of God.
13 Sei também que poder comer, beber e desfrutar o que se conseguiu com todo o trabalho é dom de Deus.
14 I know that whatsoever God doth, that will be for ever; to it nothing can be added, and from it there is nothing to be diminished: and God hath so made it, that men should be afraid of him.
14 Sei que tudo o que Deus faz durará eternamente, sem que nada possa ser acrescentado nem tirado, e que Deus faz isto para que as pessoas o temam.
15 That which hath been hath long since appeared again; and what is to be hath already been; and God seeketh again that which is sped away.
15 O que é já foi, e o que será também já foi; Deus fará vir outra vez o que já passou.
16 And moreover I have seen under the sun, that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness; and that in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness.
16 Vi ainda debaixo do sol que no lugar do juízo reinava a maldade e no lugar da justiça havia mais maldade.
17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time for every pursuit; and on account of every deed there will he judge.
17 Então eu disse a mim mesmo: “Deus julgará o justo e o ímpio; porque há um tempo para todo propósito e para toda obra.”
18 I said in my heart concerning the speaking of the sons of men, that God might make it clear to them, and that they might see that they by themselves are but beasts.
18 Eu disse mais: “Isto é por causa dos filhos dos homens, para que Deus os prove, e eles vejam que são em si mesmos como os animais.”
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even the same thing befalleth them; as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one kind of spirit: so that the preeminence of man above the beast is nought; for all is vanity.
19 Porque o mesmo que acontece com os filhos dos homens acontece com os animais: como morre um, assim morre o outro. Todos têm o mesmo fôlego de vida, e o ser humano não tem nenhuma vantagem sobre os animais. Porque tudo é vaidade.
20 Every thing goeth unto one place: every thing came from the dust, and every thing returneth to the dust.
20 Todos vão para o mesmo lugar; todos procedem do pó e ao pó voltarão.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of the sons of man that ascendeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that descendeth downward to the earth?
21 Quem sabe se o fôlego de vida dos filhos dos homens se dirige para cima e o dos animais para baixo, para a terra?
22 And so did I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion; for who can bring him to look with pleasure on what will be after him?
22 Assim, percebi que não há nada melhor para o ser humano do que desfrutar do seu trabalho, porque essa é a sua recompensa. Pois quem o fará voltar para ver o que será depois dele?
