1 Dead flies cause the precious oil of the apothecary to become stinking and foaming; so doth a little folly him that is valued for wisdom and honor.
1 Como moscas mortas produzem mau cheiro até num frasco de perfume, assim um pouco de insensatez estraga muita sabedoria e honra.
2 The heart of a wise man is at his right hand; but the heart of a fool is at his left.
2 O sábio escolhe o caminho certo, mas o tolo toma o rumo errado.
3 Yea also, on whatever way the fool walketh, doth he lack proper sense, and he saith to all that he is a fool.
3 Os tolos podem ser identificados apenas por seu modo de andar.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for submissiveness causeth great offences to be avoided.
4 Se uma autoridade se irar contra você, não abandone seu posto; o espírito calmo pode superar até mesmo grandes erros.
5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, like an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
5 Observei outro mal debaixo do sol. Governantes cometem um erro grave
6 Folly is set in great high places, and the rich sit in lowness.
6 quando dão grande autoridade aos tolos e colocam pessoas valorosas em cargos inferiores.
7 I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking like servants upon the ground.
7 Cheguei a ver servos andando a cavalo, como príncipes, e príncipes andando a pé, como servos!
8 He that diggeth a pit will fall into it; and him who breaketh down a fencea serpent will bite him.
8 Quem cava um poço corre o risco de cair nele. Quem derruba um muro corre o risco de ser mordido por uma cobra.
9 Whoso removeth stones will be hurt through them; and he that cleaveth wood will be endangered thereby.
9 Quem trabalha numa pedreira corre o risco de ser ferido pelas pedras. Quem corta lenha corre perigo a cada golpe do machado.
10 If the iron be blunt, and man do not whet the edge, then must he exert more strength; but the advantage of making it properly sharp is wisdom.
10 Trabalhar com um machado sem corte exige muito mais esforço; portanto, afie a lâmina. Esse é o valor da sabedoria: ela o ajuda a ser bem-sucedido.
11 If the serpent do bite because no one uttered a charm, then hath the man that can use his tongue in charming no preference.
11 Se a cobra morde antes de ser encantada, de que adianta ser encantador de serpentes?
12 The words of a wise mans mouth bring grace; but the lips of a fool will destroy himself.
12 As palavras do sábio trazem aprovação, mas o tolo é destruído por aquilo que ele mesmo diz.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the last that cometh out of his mouth is evilbringing madness.
13 O tolo baseia seus argumentos em ideias insensatas, por isso suas conclusões são perversa loucura;
14 The fool also multiplieth words; but a man cannot know what is to be; and what is to be after him, who can tell him?
14 mesmo assim, fala sem parar. Ninguém sabe de fato o que acontecerá; ninguém é capaz de prever o futuro.
15 The toil of the foolish will weary every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
15 O tolo fica tão exausto com seu trabalho que nem consegue encontrar o caminho de casa.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is lowminded, and when thy princes eat in the morning!
16 Como é triste a terra governada por uma pessoa imatura, cujas autoridades fazem banquetes logo de manhã.
17 Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is noblespirited, and thy princes eat in proper time, for strengthening, and not for gluttony!
17 Como é feliz a terra que tem como rei um líder nobre, cujas autoridades fazem banquetes no momento apropriado, para recuperarem as forças, e não para se embebedarem.
18 Through slothful hands the rafters will sink; and through idleness of the hands the house will become leaky.
18 Por causa da preguiça, o telhado enverga; por causa do ócio, surgem goteiras na casa.
19 For gay pleasure they prepare a feast, and wine is to make the living joyful; but money procureth all things.
19 A festa proporciona riso, o vinho proporciona alegria, e o dinheiro proporciona isso tudo!
20 Even in thy thought thou must not curse a king; and in thy bedchambers do not curse the rich; for a bird of the air can carry the sound, and that which hath wings can tell the word.
20 Nunca faça pouco do rei, nem mesmo em pensamento. Não zombe dos poderosos, nem mesmo em seu quarto. Pois um passarinho poderia contar a eles tudo que você disse.
