1 Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,
1 Então Elifaz, da região de Temã, em resposta disse:
2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?
2 “Jó, um sábio não responde com palavras ocas, não fica inchado com opiniões que não valem nada.
3 Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?
3 Um sábio não falaria palavras inúteis, nem se defenderia com argumentos sem valor.
4 Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.
4 Mas você quer acabar com o sentimento religioso; se dependesse de você, ninguém oraria a Deus.
5 For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
5 Você fala assim por causa do seu pecado e procura enganar os outros com as suas palavras.
6 Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.
6 Eu não preciso acusá-lo, pois as suas próprias palavras o condenam.
7 Wast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?
7 “Você está pensando que é o primeiro ser humano que nasceu? Por acaso, você veio ao mundo antes das montanhas?
8 Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?
8 Será que você conhece os planos secretos de Deus? Será que só você é sábio?
9 What dost thou know that we do not? [What] dost thou understand, which [is] not in us?
9 Será que você sabe o que nós não sabemos ou compreende as coisas melhor do que nós?
10 Among us [are] also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.
10 O que sabemos nós aprendemos com pessoas idosas, que nasceram antes do seu pai.
11 [Are] the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?
11 “Por que você não quer aceitar o consolo que Deus lhe oferece? Em nome dele nós falamos delicadamente com você.
12 Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,
12 Por que você se deixa levar pelo seu coração? Por que esses olhares de ódio?
13 that thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?
13 Por que essa revolta, essa ira contra Deus? Por que você se queixa assim?
14 What [is] man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?
14 “Será que alguém pode ser puro? Poderá alguma pessoa ser correta diante de Deus?
15 Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.
15 Se Deus não confia nos anjos, e se nem o céu é puro aos seus olhos,
16 How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?
16 que diremos do ser humano, imundo e nojento, que bebe o pecado como se fosse água?
17 Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that [which] I have seen,
17 “Escute, Jó, que eu vou explicar; vou contar aquilo que tenho visto.
18 that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid [it],
18 Os sábios ensinam verdades que aprenderam com os seus pais,
19 unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
19 e estes moravam numa terra que não recebeu a influência de estrangeiros.
20 The wicked man travails with pain all [his] days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.
20 “Aquele que é mau, que persegue os outros, sofre atormentado a vida inteira.
21 Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.
21 Vozes de terror enchem os seus ouvidos, e, quando pensa que está seguro, os bandidos o atacam.
22 He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.
22 Ele não tem esperança de escapar da escuridão da morte, pois um punhal está pronto para matá-lo.
23 He wanders abroad for bread, [saying], Where [is it]? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.
23 Os urubus estão esperando para devorar o seu corpo; ele sabe que o dia da escuridão está perto.
24 Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
24 Ele será dominado pela angústia e pela aflição, como acontece quando um rei espera o ataque dos inimigos.
25 Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,
25 Tudo isso acontece porque ele levanta a mão contra Deus e desafia o Todo-Poderoso.
26 he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;
26 Ele é rebelde e, protegido por um pesado se joga contra Deus.
27 for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on [his] flanks;
27 O seu olhar é orgulhoso, e o seu coração é egoísta.
28 and he dwelt in desolate cities [and] in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.
28 “Esse homem mau conquistou cidades e ficou com as casas abandonadas pelos moradores, mas essas cidades e casas virarão um monte de ruínas.
29 He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.
29 Ele não ficará rico por muito tempo e perderá tudo o que tem. Até a sua sombra vai desaparecer da terra.
30 He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.
30 O homem mau não escapará da escuridão. Ele será como uma árvore cujos galhos foram queimados e cujas flores foram levadas pelo vento.
31 He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.
31 Como não tem juízo e confia na mentira, a própria mentira será a sua recompensa.
32 He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
32 Ele secará antes da hora, como um galho que seca e nunca mais fica verde.
33 He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
33 Ele será como uma parreira que perde as uvas ainda verdes, como uma oliveira que deixa cair as suas flores.
34 For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
34 Os maus não terão descendentes, e o fogo destruirá as casas dos desonestos.
35 They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.:
35 Eles planejam a maldade, fazem o que é errado e só pensam em enganar os outros.”
