1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: likewise a small act of folly unto him [that is] esteemed for wisdom [and] honour.
1 Assim como a mosca morta faz o óleo do perfumador exalar mau cheiro, assim também uma pequena tolice pode ter mais peso do que a sabedoria e a honra.
2 A wise man's heart [is] at his right hand, but a fool's heart at his left.
2 O coração do sábio se inclina para o bem, mas o coração do tolo se inclina para o mal.
3 Even when the fool walks by the way, he lacks prudence, and he says unto every one [that] he [is] a fool.
3 Quando o tolo vai pelo caminho, falta-lhe o entendimento; e, assim, mostra a todos que é mesmo um tolo.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rises up against thee, do not leave thy place; for meekness pacifies great sins.
4 Se aquele que governa ficar indignado contra você, não deixe o seu lugar, porque o ânimo sereno acalma grandes ofensas.
5 There is [another] evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceeds from the ruler:
5 Ainda há um mal que vi debaixo do sol, um erro cometido pelos que governam:
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich are seated in [a] low place.
6 os tolos colocados em muitos postos elevados, enquanto os ricos ocupam os postos inferiores.
7 I saw servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
7 Vi servos andando a cavalo e príncipes andando a pé como se fossem servos.
8 He that digs a pit shall fall into it, and whosoever breaks a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
8 Quem abre uma cova acaba caindo nela, e quem arromba um muro será mordido por uma cobra.
9 Whosoever moves the stones shall have tribulation along with it, [and] he that cuts the firewood shall be endangered by it.
9 Quem arranca pedras será ferido por elas, e o que racha lenha se expõe ao perigo.
10 If the iron is blunt, and he does not whet the edge, [then he must] put forth more strength, but the advantages of wisdom excel.
10 Se o machado está embotado e ninguém o afia, é preciso redobrar a força; mas com sabedoria se obtém êxito.
11 If the serpent bites without being enchanted, then the babbler is no more.
11 Se a cobra morder antes de estar encantada, de nada adianta o trabalho do encantador.
12 The words from the mouth of the wise man [are] grace, but the lips of the fool will swallow up himself.
12 As palavras do sábio lhe trazem favor, mas o tolo é destruído pelo que diz;
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness, and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
13 as primeiras palavras de sua boca são tolice, e as últimas, loucura perversa.
14 The fool multiplies words [and says], Man cannot tell what shall be, and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
14 O tolo multiplica as palavras, mas o ser humano não sabe o que vai acontecer. Quem poderá lhe dizer o que será depois dele?
15 The labour of the foolish wearies all of them because they do not know how to go to the city.
15 O trabalho do tolo o fatiga, pois nem sabe ir à cidade.
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes banquet in the morning!
16 Ai de você, ó terra cujo rei é criança e cujos príncipes se banqueteiam já de manhã.
17 Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season for strength, and not for drunkenness!
17 Feliz é você, ó terra cujo rei é filho de nobres e cujos príncipes se sentam à mesa a seu tempo para refazer as forças e não para se embriagar.
18 By much slothfulness the building decays, and through idleness of the hands [the rain] drips throughout the house.
18 Por causa da preguiça o teto desaba, e por causa dos braços cruzados a casa tem goteiras.
19 The banquet is made for pleasure, and wine makes merry; but money answers all [things].
19 As festas são feitas para rir, o vinho alegra a vida, e o dinheiro dá conta de tudo.
20 Do not curse the king, not even in thy thought; and do not curse the rich even in the secret [place] of thy bedchamber; for the birds of the air shall carry the voice, and those who have wings shall tell the matter.:
20 Nem em pensamento fale mal do rei, e não fale mal do rico nem mesmo quando você estiver sozinho em seu quarto, porque as aves do céu poderiam levar a sua voz, e o que tem asas poderia contar o que você falou.
