1 When thou sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently him who is before thee,
1 Quando você for jantar com alguém importante, não esqueça quem ele é.
2 and put a knife to thy throat if thou be a man given to appetite.
2 Se você é guloso, controle-se.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food.
3 Não tenha pressa de comer a boa comida que ele serve, pois ele pode estar querendo enganar você. — 7 —
4 Weary not thyself to be rich. Out of thine own wisdom, cease.
4 Não se mate de trabalhar, tentando ficar rico,
5 Will thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For it certainly makes itself wings, like an eagle that flies toward heaven.
5 nem pense demais nisso. Pois o seu dinheiro pode sumir de repente, como se tivesse criado asas e voado para longe como uma águia. — 8 —
6 Eat thou not the bread of an evil eye, nor desire thou his dainties.
6 Não coma na casa de um homem miserável, nem tenha pressa de comer a boa comida que ele serve.
7 For as he thinks within himself, so [is] he. Eat and drink, he says to thee, but his heart is not with thee.
7 “Coma um pouco mais”, diz ele, mas não está sendo sincero.
8 The morsel which thou have eaten thou shall vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
8 O jeito dele fará com que você fique enjoado. Você vomitará o pouco que comeu, e todos os seus elogios ficarão desperdiçados. — 9 —
9 Speak not in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
9 Não perca tempo falando com um tolo, porque ele desprezará a sua conversa inteligente. — 10 —
10 Remove not the ancient landmark. And enter not into the fields of the fatherless,
10 Não mude de lugar uma divisa antiga, nem tome posse de terras que pertencem a órfãos.
11 for their Redeemer is strong. He will plead their cause against thee.
11 Deus é o poderoso defensor dos órfãos e defenderá a causa deles contra você. — 11 —
12 Apply thy heart to instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
12 Preste atenção no que lhe ensinam e aprenda o mais que puder. — 12 —
13 Withhold not correction from the child, [for] if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
13 Não deixe de corrigir a criança. Umas palmadas não a matarão.
14 Thou shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from Sheol.
14 Para dizer a verdade, poderão até livrá-la da morte. — 13 —
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart will be glad, even mine.
15 Meu filho, se você se tornar sábio, eu ficarei muito feliz.
16 Yea, my heart will rejoice when thy lips speak right things.
16 Eu me sentirei orgulhoso quando ouvir você falar com sabedoria. — 14 —
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners, but [be thou] in the fear of LORD all the day long.
17 Não tenha inveja dos pecadores. Procure respeitar e obedecer a Deus todos os dias da sua vida.
18 For surely there is a reward, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
18 Assim, o seu futuro será brilhante, e você não perderá a esperança. — 15 —
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
19 Escute, meu filho. Seja sábio e pense seriamente na sua maneira de viver.
20 Be not among winebibbers, among gluttonous eaters of flesh.
20 Não ande com gente que bebe demais, nem com quem come demais.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe [a man] with rags.
21 Porque tanto os beberrões como os comilões vivem com sono e acabam na pobreza, vestindo trapos. — 16 —
22 Hearken to thy father who begot thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
22 Escute o seu pai, pois você lhe deve a vida; e não despreze a sua mãe quando ela envelhecer.
23 Buy the truth, and do not sell it, [yea], wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
23 Compre a verdade, a sabedoria, a instrução e o bom senso, mas não venda nenhum deles.
24 The father of a righteous man will greatly rejoice, and he who begets a wise son will have joy of him.
24 O pai que tem um filho correto e sábio ficará muito feliz e se orgulhará dele.
25 Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her who bore thee rejoice.
25 Faça que o seu pai se alegre por causa de você; dê à sua mãe esse prazer. — 17 —
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes delight in my ways.
26 Meu filho, preste bem atenção no que eu digo e siga o exemplo da minha vida.
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch, and an interloping woman is a narrow pit.
27 As prostitutas e as mulheres imorais são uma armadilha perigosa e sem saída.
28 Yea, she lays in wait as a robber, and increases the treacherous among men.
28 Como um ladrão, elas esperam pelas suas vítimas e tornam muitos homens infiéis. — 18 —
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?
29 Quem é que grita de dor? Para quem são as tristezas? Quem é que vive brigando e se queixando? Quem é que tem os olhos vermelhos e ferimentos que podiam ter sido evitados?
30 Those who tarry long at the wine. Those who go to seek out mixed wine.
30 É aquele que bebe demais e anda procurando bebidas misturadas.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.
31 Não fique olhando para o vinho que brilha no copo, com a sua cor vermelha, e desce suavemente.
32 At the end it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder.
32 Pois no fim ele morde como uma cobra venenosa.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.
33 Você verá coisas esquisitas e falará tolices.
34 Yea, thou shall be as he who lays down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lays upon the top of a mast.
34 Você se sentirá como se estivesse no meio do mar, enjoado, balançando no alto do mastro de um navio.
35 They have stricken me, [thou shall say], and I was not hurt. They have beaten me, and I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
35 Então você dirá: “Alguém deve ter batido em mim; acho que levei uma surra, mas não lembro. Por que não consigo levantar? Preciso de mais um gole.”
