1 Britheren, Y nyle, that ye vnknowe, that alle oure fadris weren vndur cloude, and alle passiden the see;
1 Irmãos, não quero que vocês se esqueçam do que aconteceu muito tempo atrás, quando nossos antepassados foram guiados por uma nuvem que ia adiante deles e atravessaram o mar.
2 and alle weren baptisid in Moises, in the cloude and in the see;
2 Na nuvem e no mar, todos foram batizados como seguidores de Moisés.
3 and alle eeten the same spiritual mete,
3 Todos comeram do mesmo alimento espiritual
4 and alle drunken the same spiritual drynke; thei drunken of the spiritual stoon folewynge hem; and the stoon was Crist.
4 e todos beberam da mesma água espiritual, pois beberam da rocha espiritual que os acompanhava, e essa rocha era Cristo.
5 But not in ful manye of hem it was wel pleasaunt to God; for whi thei weren cast doun in desert.
5 No entanto, Deus não se agradou da maioria deles, e seus corpos ficaram espalhados pelo deserto.
6 But these thingis ben don in figure of vs, that we be not coueyteris of yuele thingis, as thei coueitiden.
6 Tais coisas aconteceram como advertência para nós, a fim de que não cobicemos o que é mau, como eles cobiçaram,
7 Nether be ye maad idolatreris, as summe of hem; as it is writun, The puple sat to ete and drynke, and thei risen vp to pleie.
7 nem adoremos ídolos, como alguns deles adoraram. Segundo as Escrituras, “todos comeram e beberam e se entregaram à farra”.
8 Nether do we fornycacioun, as summe of hem diden fornicacioun, and thre and twenti thousyndis weren deed in o dai.
8 E não devemos praticar a imoralidade sexual, como alguns deles praticaram, e morreram 23 mil pessoas num só dia.
9 Nethir tempte we Crist, as summe of hem temptiden, and perischiden of serpentis.
9 Também não devemos pôr Cristo à prova, como alguns deles puseram, e foram mortos por serpentes.
10 Nether grutche ye, as summe of hem grutchiden, and thei perischiden of a distrier.
10 E não se queixem como alguns deles se queixaram, e foram destruídos pelo anjo da morte.
11 And alle these thingis felliden to hem in figure; but thei ben writun to oure amendyng, in to whiche the endis of the worldis ben comun.
11 Essas coisas que aconteceram a eles nos servem como exemplo. Foram escritas como advertência para nós, que vivemos no fim dos tempos.
12 Therfor he that gessith hym, `that he stondith, se he, that he falle not.
12 Portanto, se vocês pensam que estão de pé, cuidem para que não caiam.
13 Temptacioun take `not you, but mannus temptacioun; for God is trewe, which schal not suffre you to be temptid aboue that that ye moun; but he schal make with temptacioun also purueyaunce, that ye moun suffre.
13 As tentações em sua vida não são diferentes daquelas que outros enfrentaram. Deus é fiel, e ele não permitirá tentações maiores do que vocês podem suportar. Quando forem tentados, ele mostrará uma saída para que consigam resistir.
14 Wherfor, ye most dereworthe to me, fle ye fro worschiping of maumetis.
14 Portanto, meus amados, fujam do culto aos ídolos.
15 As to prudent men Y speke, deme ye you silf that thing that Y seie.
15 Vocês são pessoas sensatas. Julguem por si mesmos se o que digo é verdade.
16 Whether the cuppe of blessyng which we blessen, is not the comynyng of Cristis blood? and whether the breed which we breken, is not the takyng of the bodi of the Lord?
16 Quando abençoamos o cálice à mesa, não participamos do sangue de Cristo? E, quando partimos o pão, não participamos do corpo de Cristo?
17 For we manye ben o breed and o bodi, alle we that taken part of o breed and of o cuppe.
17 E, embora sejamos muitos, todos comemos do mesmo pão, mostrando que somos um só corpo.
18 Se ye Israel aftir the fleisch, whethir thei that eeten sacrifices, ben not partyneris of the auter?
18 Pensem no povo de Israel. Acaso os que comiam dos sacrifícios não partilhavam do mesmo altar?
19 What therfor seie Y, that a thing that is offrid to idols is ony thing, or that the idol is ony thing?
19 Então, o que estou tentando dizer? Que a comida oferecida a ídolos tem alguma importância, ou que os ídolos são deuses de verdade?
20 But tho thingis that hethene men offren, thei offren to deuelis, and not to God. But Y nyle, that ye ben maad felowis of feendis; for ye moun not drynke the cuppe of the Lord, and the cuppe of fendis;
20 De maneira nenhuma! Estou dizendo que esses sacrifícios são oferecidos a demônios, e não a Deus. E não quero que vocês tenham parte com demônios.
21 ye moun not be parteneris of the boord of the Lord, and of the bord of feendis.
21 Vocês não podem beber do cálice do Senhor e também do cálice de demônios. Não podem participar da mesa do Senhor e também da mesa de demônios.
22 Whether we han enuye to the Lord? whether we ben strengere then he? Alle thingis ben leeueful to me, but not alle thingis ben spedeful.
22 Acaso nos atreveremos a despertar o ciúme do Senhor? Somos mais fortes que ele?
23 Alle thingis ben leeueful to me, but not alle thingis edifien.
23 “Tudo é permitido”, mas nem tudo convém. “Tudo é permitido”, mas nem tudo traz benefícios.
24 No man seke that thing that is his owne, but that thing that is of an othere.
24 Não se preocupem com seu próprio bem, mas com o bem dos outros.
25 Al thing that is seld in the bocherie, ete ye, axynge no thing for conscience.
25 Portanto, vocês podem comer qualquer carne que é vendida no mercado sem questionar nada por motivo de consciência.
26 The erthe and the plente of it is, the Lordis.
26 Pois “do Senhor é a terra e tudo que nela há”.
27 If ony of hethene men clepith you to soper, and ye wole go, al thing that is set to you, ete ye, axynge no thing for conscience.
27 Se um descrente os convidar para uma refeição, aceitem o convite se desejarem. Comam o que lhes oferecerem, sem questionar nada por motivo de consciência.
28 But if ony man seith, This thing is offrid to idols, nyle ye ete, for hym that schewide, and for conscience; and Y seie not,
28 (Mas, se alguém lhes disser: “Esta carne foi oferecida a um ídolo”, não a comam por respeito à consciência da pessoa que os avisou.
29 thi conscience, but of an othere. But wherto is my fredom demed of an othere mannus conscience?
29 Talvez não seja uma questão de consciência para vocês, mas o é para a outra pessoa.) Afinal, por que minha liberdade deve ser limitada por aquilo que outros pensam?
30 Therfor if Y take part with grace, what am Y blasfemed, for that that Y do thankyngis?
30 Por que serei eu condenado se comer algo pelo qual dei graças a Deus?
31 Therfor whether ye eten, or drynken, or don ony other thing, do ye alle thingis `in to the glorie of God.
31 Portanto, quer vocês comam, quer bebam, quer façam qualquer outra coisa, façam para a glória de Deus.
32 Be ye with outen sclaundre to Jewis, and to hethene men, and to the chirche of God;
32 Não ofendam nem os judeus, nem os gentios, nem a igreja de Deus,
33 as Y bi alle thingis plese to alle men, not sekynge that that is profitable to me, but that that is profitable to manye men, that thei be maad saaf.
33 assim como também eu procuro agradar a todos em tudo que faço. Não faço apenas o que é melhor para mim; faço o que é melhor para os outros, a fim de que muitos sejam salvos.
