¹ On the first day of the week, very early, while it was still dark, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from it.

¹ No primeiro dia que se seguia ao sábado, Maria Madalena foi ao sepulcro, de manhã cedo, quando ainda estava escuro. Viu a pedra removida do sepulcro.

² So she ran, as fast as she could, to find Simon Peter and the other disciple –the one who was dear to Jesus– and to tell them, »They have taken the Master out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.«

² Correu e foi dizer a Simão Pedro e ao outro discípulo a quem Jesus amava: Tiraram o Senhor do sepulcro, e não sabemos onde o puseram!

³ Peter and the other disciple started at once to go to the tomb, both of them running,

³ Saiu então Pedro com aquele outro discípulo, e foram ao sepulcro.

⁴ but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached it before he did.

⁴ Corriam juntos, mas aquele outro discípulo correu mais depressa do que Pedro e chegou primeiro ao sepulcro.

⁵ Stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths lying there on the ground, but he did not go in.

⁵ Inclinou-se e viu ali os panos no chão, mas não entrou.

⁶ Simon Peter, however, also came, following him, and entered the tomb. There on the ground he saw the cloths;

⁶ Chegou Simão Pedro que o seguia, entrou no sepulcro e viu os panos postos no chão.

⁷ and the towel, which had been placed over the face of Jesus, not lying with the cloths, but folded up and put by itself.

⁷ Viu também o sudário que estivera sobre a cabeça de Jesus. Não estava, porém, com os panos, mas enrolado num lugar à parte.

⁸ Then the other disciple, who had been the first to come to the tomb, also went in and saw and was convinced.

⁸ Então entrou também o discípulo que havia chegado primeiro ao sepulcro. Viu e creu.

⁹ For until now they had not understood the inspired teaching, that He must rise again from among the dead.

⁹ Em verdade, ainda não haviam entendido a Escritura, segundo a qual Jesus devia ressuscitar dentre os mortos.

¹⁰ Then they went away and returned home.

¹⁰ Os discípulos, então, voltaram para as suas casas.

¹¹ Meanwhile Mary remained standing near the tomb, weeping aloud. She did not enter the tomb, but as she wept she stooped and looked in,

¹¹ Entretanto, Maria se conservava do lado de fora perto do sepulcro e chorava. Chorando, inclinou-se para olhar dentro do sepulcro.

¹² and saw two angels clothed in white raiment, sitting one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been.

¹² Viu dois anjos vestidos de branco, sentados onde estivera o corpo de Jesus, um à cabeceira e outro aos pés.

¹³ They spoke to her. »Why are you weeping?« they asked. »Because,« she replied, »they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him.«

¹³ Eles lhe perguntaram: Mulher, por que choras? Ela respondeu: Porque levaram o meu Senhor, e não sei onde o puseram.

¹⁴ While she was speaking, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but did not recognize Him.

¹⁴ Ditas estas palavras, voltou-se para trás e viu Jesus em pé, mas não o reconheceu.

¹⁵ »Why are you weeping?« He asked; »who are you looking for?« She, supposing that He was the gardener, replied, »Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him and I will remove him.«

¹⁵ Perguntou-lhe Jesus: Mulher, por que choras? Quem procuras? Supondo ela que fosse o jardineiro, respondeu: Senhor, se tu o tiraste, dize-me onde o puseste e eu o irei buscar.

¹⁶ »Mary!« said Jesus. She turned to Him. »Rabboni!« she cried in Hebrew: the word means `Teacher!'

¹⁶ Disse-lhe Jesus: Maria! Voltando-se ela, exclamou em hebraico: Rabôni! {que quer dizer Mestre}.

¹⁷ »Do not cling to me,« said Jesus, »for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But take this message to my brethren: `I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'«

¹⁷ Disse-lhe Jesus: Não me retenhas, porque ainda não subi a meu Pai, mas vai a meus irmãos e dize-lhes: Subo para meu Pai e vosso Pai, meu Deus e vosso Deus.

¹⁸ Mary of Magdala came and brought word to the disciples. »I have seen the Master,« she said. And she told them that He had said these things to her.

¹⁸ Maria Madalena correu para anunciar aos discípulos que ela tinha visto o Senhor e contou o que ele lhe tinha falado.

¹⁹ On that same first day of the week, when it was evening and, for fear of the Jews, the doors of the house where the disciples were, were locked, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them, »Peace be to you!«

¹⁹ Na tarde do mesmo dia, que era o primeiro da semana, os discípulos tinham fechado as portas do lugar onde se achavam, por medo dos judeus. Jesus veio e pôs-se no meio deles. Disse-lhes ele: A paz esteja convosco!

²⁰ Having said this He showed them His hands and also His side; and the disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Master.

²⁰ Dito isso, mostrou-lhes as mãos e o lado. Os discípulos alegraram-se ao ver o Senhor.

²¹ A second time, therefore, He said to them, »Peace be to you! As the Father sent me, I also now send you.«

²¹ Disse-lhes outra vez: A paz esteja convosco! Como o Pai me enviou, assim também eu vos envio a vós.

²² Having said this He breathed upon them and said, »Receive the Holy Spirit.

²² Depois dessas palavras, soprou sobre eles dizendo-lhes: Recebei o Espírito Santo.

²³ If you remit the sins of any persons, they remain remitted to them. If you bind fast the sins of any, they remain bound.«

²³ Àqueles a quem perdoardes os pecados, ser-lhes-ão perdoados; àqueles a quem os retiverdes, ser-lhes-ão retidos.

²⁴ Thomas, one of the twelve –surnamed `the Twin'– was not among them when Jesus came.

²⁴ Tomé, um dos Doze, chamado Dídimo, não estava com eles quando veio Jesus.

²⁵ So the rest of the disciples told him, »We have seen the Master!« His reply was, »Unless I see in his hands the wound made by the nails and put my finger into the wound, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe it.«

²⁵ Os outros discípulos disseram-lhe: Vimos o Senhor. Mas ele replicou-lhes: Se não vir nas suas mãos o sinal dos pregos, e não puser o meu dedo no lugar dos pregos, e não introduzir a minha mão no seu lado, não acreditarei!

²⁶ A week later the disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them, when Jesus came –though the doors were locked– and stood in their midst, and said, »Peace be to you.«

²⁶ Oito dias depois, estavam os seus discípulos outra vez no mesmo lugar e Tomé com eles. Estando trancadas as portas, veio Jesus, pôs-se no meio deles e disse: A paz esteja convosco!

²⁷ Then He said to Thomas, »Bring your finger here and feel my hands; bring you hand and put it into my side; and do not be ready to disbelieve but to believe.«

²⁷ Depois disse a Tomé: Introduz aqui o teu dedo, e vê as minhas mãos. Põe a tua mão no meu lado. Não sejas incrédulo, mas homem de fé.

²⁸ »My Lord and my God!« replied Thomas.

²⁸ Respondeu-lhe Tomé: Meu Senhor e meu Deus!

²⁹ »Because you have seen me,« replied Jesus, »you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.«

²⁹ Disse-lhe Jesus: Creste, porque me viste. Felizes aqueles que crêem sem ter visto!

³⁰ There were also a great number of other signs which Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not recorded in this book.

³⁰ Fez Jesus, na presença dos seus discípulos, ainda muitos outros milagres que não estão escritos neste livro.

³¹ But these have been recorded in order that you may believe that He is the Christ, the Son of God, and that, through believing, you may have Life through His name.

³¹ Mas estes foram escritos, para que creiais que Jesus é o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, e para que, crendo, tenhais a vida em seu nome.
