1 Now, when the Master heard that the Pharisees had been told that he was making and baptizing more disciples than John
1 Jesus sabia que os fariseus tinham ouvido dizer que ele batizava e fazia mais discípulos que João,
2 (Though it was not Jesus himself, but his disciples, who baptized),
2 embora Jesus mesmo não os batizasse, e sim seus discípulos.
3 he left Judea, and set out again for Galilee.
3 Assim, deixou a Judeia e voltou para a Galileia.
4 He had to pass through Samaria,
4 No caminho, teve de passar por Samaria.
5 and, on his way, he came to a Samaritan town called Shechem, near the plot of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
5 Chegou ao povoado samaritano de Sicar, perto do campo que Jacó tinha dado a seu filho José.
6 Jacob’s Spring was there, and Jesus, being tired after his journey, sat down beside the spring, just as he was. It was then about midday.
6 O poço de Jacó ficava ali, e Jesus, cansado da longa caminhada, sentou-se junto ao poço, por volta do meio-dia.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water; and Jesus said to her — “Give me some to drink,”
7 Pouco depois, uma mulher samaritana veio tirar água, e Jesus lhe disse: “Por favor, dê-me um pouco de água para beber”.
8 For his disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
8 Naquele momento, seus discípulos tinham ido ao povoado comprar comida.
9 “How is it,” replied the Samaritan woman, “that you who are a Jew ask for water from a Samaritan woman like me?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans).
9 A mulher ficou surpresa, pois os judeus se recusam a ter qualquer contato com os samaritanos. “Você é judeu, e eu sou uma mulher samaritana”, disse ela a Jesus. “Como é que me pede água para beber?”
10 “If you knew of the gift of God,”replied Jesus, “and who it is that is saying to you ‘Give me some water,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you ‘living water’.”
10 Jesus respondeu: “Se ao menos você soubesse que presente Deus tem para você e com quem está falando, você me pediria e eu lhe daria água viva”.
11 “You have no bucket, Sir, and the well is deep,” she said; “where did you get that ‘living water?’
11 “Mas você não tem corda nem balde, e o poço é muito fundo”, disse ela. “De onde tiraria essa água viva?
12 Surely you are not greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us the well, and used to drink from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle!”
12 Além do mais, você se considera mais importante que nosso antepassado Jacó, que nos deu este poço? Como pode oferecer água melhor que esta que Jacó, seus filhos e seus animais bebiam?”
13 “All who drink of this water,”replied Jesus, “will be thirsty again;
13 Jesus respondeu: “Quem bebe desta água logo terá sede outra vez,
14 but whoever once drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst any more; but the water that I will give him will become a spring welling up within him — a source of eternal life.”
14 mas quem bebe da água que eu dou nunca mais terá sede. Ela se torna uma fonte que brota dentro dele e lhe dá a vida eterna”.
15 “Give me this water, Sir,” said the woman, “so that I may not be thirsty, nor have to come all the way here to draw water.”
15 “Por favor, senhor, dê-me dessa água!”, disse a mulher. “Assim eu nunca mais terei sede nem precisarei vir aqui para tirar água.”
16 “Go and call your husband,”said Jesus, “and then come back.”
16 “Vá buscar seu marido”, disse Jesus.
17 “I have no husband,” answered the woman. “You are right in saying ‘I have no husband,’”replied Jesus,
17 “Não tenho marido”, respondeu a mulher. Jesus disse: “É verdade. Você não tem marido,
18 “For you have had five husbands, and the man with whom you are now living is not your husband; in saying that, you have spoken the truth.”
18 pois teve cinco maridos e não é casada com o homem com quem vive agora. Certamente você disse a verdade”.
19 “I see, Sir, that you are a prophet!” exclaimed the woman.
19 “O senhor deve ser profeta”, disse a mulher.
20 “It was on this mountain that our ancestors worshiped; and yet you Jews say that the proper place for worship is in Jerusalem.”
20 “Então diga-me: por que os judeus insistem que Jerusalém é o único lugar de adoração, enquanto nós, os samaritanos, afirmamos que é aqui, no monte Gerizim, onde nossos antepassados adoraram?”
21 “Believe me,”replied Jesus, “a time is coming when it will be neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem that you will worship the Father.
21 Jesus respondeu: “Creia em mim, mulher, está chegando a hora em que já não importará se você adora o Pai neste monte ou em Jerusalém.
22 You Samaritans do not know what you worship; we know what we worship, for salvation comes from the Jews.
22 Vocês, samaritanos, sabem muito pouco a respeito daquele a quem adoram. Nós adoramos com conhecimento, pois a salvação vem por meio dos judeus.
23 But a time is coming, indeed it is already here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father spiritually and truly; for such are the worshipers that the Father desires.
23 Mas está chegando a hora, e de fato já chegou, em que os verdadeiros adoradores adorarão o Pai em espírito e em verdade. O Pai procura pessoas que o adorem desse modo.
24 God is Spirit; and those who worship him must worship spiritually and truly.”
24 Pois Deus é Espírito, e é necessário que seus adoradores o adorem em espírito e em verdade”.
25 “I know,” answered the woman, “that the Messiah, who is called the Christ, is coming; when once he has come, he will tell us everything.”
25 A mulher disse: “Eu sei que o Messias (aquele que é chamado Cristo) virá. Quando vier, ele nos explicará tudo”.
26 “I am he,”Jesus said to her, “I who am speaking to you.”
26 Então Jesus lhe disse: “Sou eu, o que fala com você!”.
27 At this moment his disciples came up, and were surprised to find him talking with a woman; but none of them asked ‘What do you want?’ or ‘Why are you talking with her?’
27 Naquele momento, seus discípulos voltaram. Ficaram surpresos de encontrá-lo falando com uma mulher, mas nenhum deles se atreveu a perguntar: “O que o senhor quer?” ou “Por que conversa com ela?”.
28 So the woman, leaving her pitcher, went back to the town, and said to the people:
28 A mulher deixou sua vasilha de água junto ao poço e correu de volta para o povoado, dizendo a todos:
29 “Come and see someone who has told me everything that I have done. Can he be the Christ?”
29 “Venham ver um homem que me disse tudo que eu já fiz na vida! Será que não é ele o Cristo?”.
30 And the people left the town and went to see Jesus.
30 Então as pessoas saíram do povoado para vê-lo.
31 Meanwhile the disciples kept saying to him: “Take something to eat, Rabbi.”
31 Enquanto isso, os discípulos insistiam com Jesus: “Rabi, coma alguma coisa”.
32 “I have food to eat,”he answered, “of which you know nothing.”
32 Ele, porém, respondeu: “Eu tenho um tipo de alimento que vocês não conhecem”.
33 “Can anyone have brought him anything to eat?” the disciples said to one another.
33 Os discípulos perguntaram uns aos outros: “Será que alguém lhe trouxe comida?”.
34 “My food,”replied Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me, and to complete his work.
34 Então Jesus explicou: “Meu alimento consiste em fazer a vontade daquele que me enviou e em terminar a sua obra.
35 Do not you say that it still wants four months to harvest? Why, look up, and see how white the fields are for harvest!
35 Vocês não costumam dizer: ‘Ainda faltam quatro meses para a colheita’? Mas eu lhes digo: despertem e olhem em volta. Os campos estão maduros para a colheita.
36 Already the reaper is receiving wages and gathering in sheaves for eternal life, so that sower and reaper rejoice together.
36 Os que colhem já recebem salário, e os frutos que ajuntam são as pessoas que passam a ter a vida eterna. Que alegria espera tanto o que semeia como o que colhe!
37 For here the proverb holds good — ‘One sows, another reaps.’
37 Vocês conhecem o ditado: ‘Um semeia e outro colhe’. E é verdade.
38 I have sent you to reap that on which you have spent no labor; others have labored, and you have reaped the results of their labor.”
38 Eu envio vocês para colher onde não semearam; outros realizaram o trabalho, e agora vocês ajuntarão a colheita”.
39 Many from that town came to believe in Jesus — Samaritans though they were — because the woman had said: ‘He has told me everything that I have done.’
39 Muitos samaritanos do povoado creram em Jesus por causa daquilo que a mulher relatou: “Ele me disse tudo que eu já fiz!”.
40 And, when these Samaritans had come to Jesus, they begged him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.
40 Quando saíram para vê-lo, insistiram que ficasse no povoado. Jesus permaneceu ali dois dias,
41 But far more came to believe in him because of what he said himself,
41 e muitos outros ouviram sua palavra e creram.
42 and they said to the woman: “It is no longer because of what you say that we believe in him, for we have heard him ourselves and know that he really is the Savior of the world.”
42 Então disseram à mulher: “Agora cremos, não apenas por causa do que você nos contou, mas porque nós mesmos o ouvimos. Agora sabemos que ele é, de fato, o Salvador do mundo”.
43 After these two days Jesus went on to Galilee;
43 Depois daqueles dois dias, Jesus partiu para a Galileia.
44 for he himself declared that ‘a prophet is not honored in his own country.’
44 Ele mesmo tinha dito que um profeta não é honrado em sua própria terra.
45 When he entered Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, for they had seen all that he did at Jerusalem during the Festival, at which they also had been present.
45 Mas, uma vez que os galileus haviam estado em Jerusalém para a festa da Páscoa e visto tudo que Jesus fizera, eles o receberam.
46 So Jesus came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Now there was one of the king’s officers whose son was lying ill at Capernaum.
46 Enquanto Jesus viajava pela Galileia, chegou a Caná, onde tinha transformado água em vinho. Perto dali, em Cafarnaum, havia um oficial do governo cujo filho estava muito doente.
47 When this man heard that Jesus had returned from Judea to Galilee, he went to him, and begged him to come down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death.
47 Quando soube que Jesus viera da Judeia para a Galileia, foi até ele e suplicou que fosse a Cafarnaum para curar seu filho, que estava à beira da morte.
48 Jesus answered: “Unless you all see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”
48 Jesus exclamou: “Jamais crerão, a menos que vejam sinais e maravilhas!”.
49 “Sir,” said the officer, “come down before my child dies.” And Jesus answered: “Go, your son is living.”
49 O oficial implorou: “Senhor, por favor, venha antes que meu filho morra”.
50 The man believed what Jesus said to him, and went;
50 “Volte!”, disse Jesus. “Seu filho viverá.” O homem creu nas palavras de Jesus e partiu para casa.
51 and, while he was on his way down, his servants met him, and told him that his child was living.
51 Enquanto estava a caminho, alguns de seus servos vieram a seu encontro com a notícia de que seu filho estava vivo e bem.
52 So he asked them at what time the boy began to get better. “It was yesterday, about one o’clock,” they said, “that the fever left him.”
52 Ele perguntou quando o menino havia começado a melhorar, e eles responderam: “Ontem à tarde, à uma hora, a febre subitamente desapareceu!”.
53 By this the father knew that it was at the very time when Jesus had said to him ‘Your son is living’; and he himself, with all his household, believed in Jesus.
53 Então o pai percebeu que havia sido naquele exato momento que Jesus tinha dito: “Seu filho viverá”. E o oficial e todos de sua casa creram em Jesus.
54 This was the second occasion on which Jesus gave a sign of his mission on coming from Judea to Galilee.
54 Esse foi o segundo sinal que Jesus realizou na Galileia, depois que veio da Judeia.
