1 Therefore, my Christian friends, you who, all alike, have received the call from heaven, fix your attention on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our religion.
1 Portanto, irmãos santos que participam do chamado celestial, considerem atentamente a Jesus, que declaramos ser Apóstolo e Sumo Sacerdote.
2 See how faithful he was to the God who appointed him, as Moses was in the whole house of God.
2 Pois ele foi fiel àquele que o designou, assim como Moisés serviu fielmente quando lhe foi confiada toda a casa de Deus.
3 He has been deemed worthy of far higher honor than Moses, just as the founder of the house is held in greater regard than the house itself.
3 Jesus, no entanto, é digno de muito mais honra que Moisés, assim como a pessoa que constrói uma casa merece mais elogios que a casa em si.
4 For every house has its founder, and the founder of the universe is God.
4 Pois toda casa tem um construtor, mas Deus é o construtor de todas as coisas.
5 While the faithful service of Moses in the whole house of God was that of a servant, whose duty was to bear testimony to a message still to come,
5 Por certo, Moisés foi fiel como servo na casa de Deus, e seu trabalho ilustrou verdades que seriam mais tarde reveladas.
6 the faithfulness of Christ was that of a son set over the house of God. And we are his house — if only we retain, unshaken to the end, the courage and confidence inspired by our hope.
6 Mas Cristo, como Filho, é responsável por toda a casa de Deus; e nós somos a casa de Deus, se nos mantivermos corajosos e firmes em nossa esperança gloriosa.
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says — ‘If today you hear God’s voice,
7 Por isso o Espírito Santo diz: “Hoje, se ouvirem sua voz,
8 harden not your hearts, as when Israel provoked me On the day when they tried my patience in the desert,
8 não endureçam o coração como eles fizeram na rebelião, quando me puseram à prova no deserto.
9 Where your ancestors tried my forbearance, And saw my mighty deeds for forty years.
9 Ali seus antepassados me tentaram e me puseram à prova, apesar de terem visto meus feitos durante quarenta anos.
10 Therefore I was sorely vexed with that generation, And I said — “Their hearts are always straying; They have never learned my ways”;
10 Por isso fiquei irado com aquela geração e disse: ‘Seu coração sempre se desvia de mim; vocês se recusam a andar em meus caminhos’.
11 While in my wrath I swore — “They will never enter upon my rest.”’
11 Assim, jurei em minha ira: ‘Jamais entrarão em meu descanso’”.
12 Be careful, friends, that there is never found in anyone of you a wicked and faithless heart, shown by that person separating themselves from the living God.
12 Portanto, irmãos, cuidem para que nenhum de vocês tenha coração perverso e incrédulo que os desvie do Deus vivo.
13 Rather encourage one another daily — while there is a ‘Today’ — to prevent anyone among you from being hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
13 Advirtam uns aos outros todos os dias, enquanto ainda é “hoje”, para que nenhum de vocês seja enganado pelo pecado e fique endurecido.
14 For we now all share in the Christ, if indeed we retain, unshaken to the end, the confidence that we had at the first.
14 Porque nos tornaremos participantes de Cristo, se de fato mantivermos firme até o fim a confiança que nele depositamos no início.
15 To use the words of scripture — ‘If today you hear God’s voice, Harden not your hearts, as when Israel provoked me.’
15 Lembrem-se do que foi dito: “Hoje, se ouvirem sua voz, não endureçam o coração como eles fizeram na rebelião”.
16 Who were they who heard God speak and yet provoked him? Were not they all those who left Egypt under the leadership of Moses?
16 E quem foram os que se rebelaram mesmo depois de terem ouvido? Não foram aqueles que saíram do Egito conduzidos por Moisés?
17 And with whom was it that God was sorely vexed for forty years? Was not it with those who had sinned, and who fell dead in the desert?
17 E quem deixou Deus irado durante quarenta anos? Não foi o povo que pecou e cujos corpos ficaram no deserto?
18 And who were they to whom God swore that they should not enter upon his rest, if not those who had proved faithless?
18 E a quem Deus se dirigiu quando jurou que jamais entrariam em seu descanso? Não foi ao povo que lhe desobedeceu?
19 We see, then, that they failed to enter upon it because of their want of faith.
19 Vemos, portanto, que não puderam entrar no descanso por causa de sua incredulidade.
