1 My point is this — As long as the heir is under age, there is no difference between him and a slave, though he is master of the whole estate.
1 Digo, pois, que, todo o tempo em que o herdeiro é menino, em nada difere do servo, ainda que seja senhor de tudo.
2 He is subject to the control of guardians and stewards, during the period for which his father has power to appoint them.
2 Mas está debaixo de tutores e curadores até ao tempo determinado pelo pai.
3 And so is it with us; when we were under age, as it were, we were slaves to the puerile teaching of this world;
3 Assim também nós, quando éramos meninos, estávamos reduzidos à servidão debaixo dos primeiros rudimentos do mundo;
4 but, when the full time came, God sent his Son — born a woman’s child, born subject to law —
4 mas, vindo a plenitude dos tempos, Deus enviou seu Filho, nascido de mulher, nascido sob a lei,
5 To ransom those who were subject to law, so that we might take our position as sons.
5 para remir os que estavam debaixo da lei, a fim de recebermos a adoção de filhos.
6 And it is because you are sons that God sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son, with the cry — ‘Abba, our Father.’
6 E, porque sois filhos, Deus enviou aos nossos corações o Espírito de seu Filho, que clama: Aba, Pai.
7 You, therefore, are no longer a slave, but a son; and, if a son, then an heir also, by God’s appointment.
7 Assim que já não és mais servo, mas filho; e, se és filho, és também herdeiro de Deus por Cristo.
8 Yet formerly, in your ignorance of God, you became slaves to ‘gods’ which were no gods.
8 Mas, quando não conhecíeis a Deus, servíeis aos que por natureza não são deuses.
9 But now that you have found God — or, rather, have been found by him — how is it that you are turning back to that poor and feeble puerile teaching, to which yet once again you are wanting to become slaves?
9 Mas agora, conhecendo a Deus ou, antes, sendo conhecidos de Deus, como tornais outra vez a esses rudimentos fracos e pobres, aos quais de novo quereis servir?
10 You are scrupulous in keeping days and months and seasons and years!
10 Guardais dias, e meses, e tempos, e anos.
11 You make me fear that the labor which I have spent on you may have been wasted.
11 Receio de vós que haja eu trabalhado em vão para convosco.
12 I entreat you, friends, to become like me, as I became like you. You have never done me any wrong.
12 Irmãos, rogo-vos que sejais como eu, porque também eu sou como vós; nenhum mal me fizestes.
13 You remember that it was owing to bodily infirmity that on the first occasion I told you the good news.
13 E vós sabeis que primeiro vos anunciei o evangelho estando em fraqueza da carne.
14 And as for what must have tried you in my condition, it did not inspire you with scorn or disgust, but you welcomed me as if I had been an angel of God — or Christ Jesus himself!
14 E não rejeitastes, nem desprezastes isso que era uma tentação na minha carne; antes, me recebestes como um anjo de Deus, como Jesus Cristo mesmo.
15 What has become then, of your blessings? For I can bear witness that, had it been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me!
15 Qual é, logo, a vossa bem-aventurança? Porque vos dou testemunho de que, se possível fora, arrancaríeis os olhos, e mos daríeis.
16 Am I to think, then, that I have become your enemy by telling you the truth?
16 Fiz-me, acaso, vosso inimigo, dizendo a verdade?
17 Certain people are seeking your favor, but with no honorable object. No, indeed, they want to isolate you, so that you will have to seek their favor.
17 Eles têm zelo por vós, não como convém; mas querem excluir-vos, para que vós tenhais zelo por eles.
18 It is always honorable to have your favor sought in an honorable cause, and not only when I am with you, my dear children —
18 É bom ser zeloso, mas sempre do bem e não somente quando estou presente convosco.
19 You for whom I am again enduring a mother’s pains, until a likeness to Christ will have been formed in you.
19 Meus filhinhos, por quem de novo sinto as dores de parto, até que Cristo seja formado em vós;
20 But I could wish to be with you now and speak in a different tone, for I am perplexed about you.
20 eu bem quisera, agora, estar presente convosco e mudar a minha voz; porque estou perplexo a vosso respeito.
21 Tell me, you who want to be still subject to law — Why do not you listen to the law?
21 Dizei-me vós, os que quereis estar debaixo da lei: não ouvis vós a lei?
22 scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one the child of the slave-woman and the other the child of the free woman.
22 Porque está escrito que Abraão teve dois filhos, um da escrava e outro da livre.
23 But the child of the slave-woman was born in the course of nature, while the child of the free woman was born in fulfillment of a promise.
23 Todavia, o que era da escrava nasceu segundo a carne, mas o que era da livre, por promessa,
24 This story may be taken as an allegory. The women stand for two Covenants. One covenant, given from Mount Sinai, produces a race of slaves and is represented by Hagar
24 o que se entende por alegoria; porque estes são os dois concertos: um, do monte Sinai, gerando filhos para a servidão, que é Agar.
25 (The word Hagar meaning in Arabia Mount Sinai) and it ranks with the Jerusalem of today, for she and her children are in slavery.
25 Ora, esta Agar é Sinai, um monte da Arábia, que corresponde à Jerusalém que agora existe, pois é escrava com seus filhos.
26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she it is who is our mother.
26 Mas a Jerusalém que é de cima é livre, a qual é mãe de todos nós;
27 For scripture says — ‘Rejoice, you barren one, who does never bear, Break into shouts, you who are never in labor, For many are the children of her who is desolate — aye, more than of her who has a husband.’
27 porque está escrito: Alegra-te, estéril, que não dás à luz, esforça-te e clama, tu que não estás de parto; porque os filhos da solitária são mais do que os da que tem marido.
28 As for ourselves, friends, we, like Isaac, are children born in fulfillment of a promise.
28 Mas nós, irmãos, somos filhos da promessa, como Isaque.
29 Yet at that time the child born in the course of nature persecuted the child born by the power of the Spirit; and it is the same now.
29 Mas, como, então, aquele que era gerado segundo a carne perseguia o que o era segundo o Espírito, assim é também, agora.
30 But what does the passage of scripture say? ‘Send away the slave-woman and her son; for the slave’s son will not be coheir with the son of the free woman.’
30 Mas que diz a Escritura? Lança fora a escrava e seu filho, porque, de modo algum, o filho da escrava herdará com o filho da livre.
31 And so, friends, we are not children of a slave, but of her who is free.
31 De maneira que, irmãos, somos filhos não da escrava, mas da livre.
