1 I said ⌞to myself⌟, “Come! I will test pleasure ⌞to see whether it is worthwhile⌟.” But look, “This also is vanity!”
1 Pensei comigo mesmo: Vamos. Vou experimentar a alegria. Descubra as coisas boas da vida! Mas isso também se revelou inútil.
2 I said of laughter, “It is folly!” and of pleasure, “⌞What does it accomplish?⌟”
2 Concluí que o rir é loucura, e a alegria de nada vale.
3 I also ⌞explored⌟ ⌞the effects of indulging my flesh⌟ with wine. My mind guiding me with wisdom, ⌞I investigated⌟ folly so that I might discover what is good under heaven for ⌞humans⌟ to do ⌞during the days of their lives⌟.
3 Decidi-me entregar ao vinho e à extravagância; mantendo, porém, a mente orientada pela sabedoria. Eu queria saber o que valesse a pena, debaixo do céu, nos poucos dias da vida humana.
4 ⌞I accomplished great things⌟. I built for myself houses; I planted for myself vineyards.
4 Lancei-me a grandes projetos: construí casas e plantei vinhas para mim.
5 I made for myself gardens and parks, and I planted all sorts of fruit trees in them.
5 Fiz jardins e pomares, e neles plantei todo tipo de árvore frutífera.
6 I made for myself pools of water from which to irrigate a grove of flourishing trees.
6 Construí também reservatórios para regar os meus bosques verdejantes.
7 I acquired male slaves and female slaves, as well as children born in my house. I also had livestock, cattle, and flocks more than anyone who was before me in Jerusalem.
7 Comprei escravos e escravas e tive escravos que nasceram em minha casa. Além disso tive também mais bois e ovelhas do que todos os que viveram antes de mim em Jerusalém.
8 I also gathered to myself silver and gold—the royal and provincial treasuries. I acquired for myself male and female singers, as well as the delight of ⌞men⌟, ⌞voluptuous concubines⌟.
8 Ajuntei para mim prata e ouro, tesouros de reis e de províncias. Servi-me de cantores e cantoras, e também de um harém, as delícias do homem.
9 Thus, ⌞I accomplished far more⌟ than anyone who was before me in Jerusalem—indeed, my wisdom stood by me.
9 Tornei-me mais famoso e poderoso do que todos os que viveram em Jerusalém antes de mim, conservando comigo a minha sabedoria.
10 I neither withheld anything from my eyes that they desired, nor did I deprive any pleasure from my heart. My heart rejoiced in all my toil, for this was my reward from all my toil.
10 Não me neguei nada que os meus olhos desejaram; não me recusei a dar prazer algum ao meu coração. Na verdade, eu me alegrei em todo o meu trabalho; essa foi a recompensa de todo o meu esforço.
11 Yet when I considered all the effort which I expended and the toil with which I toiled to do, then behold, “Everything is vanity and chasing wind! There is nothing profitable under the sun!”
11 Contudo, quando avaliei tudo o que as minhas mãos haviam feito e o trabalho que eu tanto me esforçara para realizar, percebi que tudo foi inútil, foi correr atrás do vento; não há qualquer proveito no que se faz debaixo do sol.
12 Next, I considered wisdom, as well as delusion and folly. What can anyone do who will come after the king that has not already been done?
12 Então passei a refletir na sabedoria, na loucura e na insensatez. O que pode fazer o sucessor do rei a não ser repetir o que já foi feito?
13 I realized that wisdom has an advantage over folly, just as light has an advantage over darkness.
13 Percebi que a sabedoria é melhor que a insensatez, assim como a luz é melhor do que as trevas.
14 ⌞The wise man can see where he is walking⌟, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet I also realized that both of them suffer the same fate.
14 O homem sábio tem olhos que enxergam, mas o tolo anda nas trevas; todavia, percebi que ambos têm o mesmo destino.
15 So I said ⌞to myself⌟, “⌞If I also suffer the same fate as the fool⌟, ⌞what advantage is my great wisdom⌟?” So I said ⌞to myself⌟, “This also is vanity!”
15 Então pensei comigo mesmo: O que acontece ao tolo também me acontecerá. Que proveito eu tive em ser sábio? Então eu disse no meu íntimo: Isso não faz o menor sentido!
16 Certainly no one will remember the wise man or the fool in ⌞future generations⌟. When future days come, both will have been forgotten already. How is it that the wise man dies the same as the fool?
16 Nem o sábio, nem o tolo, serão lembrados para sempre; nos dias futuros ambos serão esquecidos. Como pode o sábio morrer como morre o tolo?
17 So I hated life because the work done under the sun is grievous to me. For everything is vanity and chasing wind!
17 Por isso desprezei a vida, pois o trabalho que se faz debaixo do sol pareceu-me muito pesado. Tudo era inútil, era correr atrás do vento.
18 So I hated all my toil with which I have toiled under the sun, for I must leave it behind to someone who will be after me.
18 Desprezei todas as coisas pelas quais eu tanto me esforçara debaixo do sol, pois terei que deixá-las para aquele que me suceder.
19 And who knows whether he will be wise or foolish? Yet he will exercise control of all the fruit of my toil with which I toiled wisely under the sun. This also is vanity!
19 E quem pode dizer se ele será sábio ou tolo? Contudo, terá domínio sobre tudo o que realizei com o meu trabalho e com a minha sabedoria debaixo do sol. Isso também não faz sentido.
20 So ⌞I began to despair⌟ of all the toil with which I toiled under the sun.
20 Cheguei ao ponto de me desesperar por causa de todo o trabalho em que tanto me esforcei debaixo do sol.
21 For although a person may toil with great wisdom and skill, he must leave his reward to someone who has not toiled for it. This also is vanity and a great calamity.
21 Pois um homem pode realizar o seu trabalho com sabedoria, conhecimento e habilidade, mas terá que deixar tudo o que possui como herança para alguém que não se esforçou por aquilo. Isso também é um absurdo e uma grande injustiça.
22 For what does a person receive for all his toil and in the longing of his heart with which he toils under the sun?
22 Que proveito tem um homem de todo o esforço e de toda a ansiedade com que trabalha debaixo do sol?
23 All his days are painful, his labor brings grief, and his heart cannot rest at night. This also is vanity!
23 Durante toda a sua vida, seu trabalho não passa de dor e tristeza; mesmo à noite a sua mente não descansa. Isso também é absurdo.
24 There is nothing better for a person than to eat and drink and ⌞find delight⌟ in his toil. For I also realized that this is from the hand of God!
24 Para o homem não existe nada melhor do que comer, beber e encontrar prazer em seu trabalho. E vi que isso também vem da mão de Deus.
25 For who can eat and drink, and who can enjoy life apart from him?
25 E quem aproveitou melhor as comidas e os prazeres do que eu?
26 For to the person who is good in his eyes, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and heaping up only to give it to him who is pleasing to him. This also is vanity and chasing wind!
26 Ao homem que o agrada, Deus recompensa com sabedoria, conhecimento e felicidade. Quanto ao pecador, Deus o encarrega de ajuntar e armazenar riquezas para entregá-las a quem o agrada. Isso também é inútil, é correr atrás do vento.
