1 Ephraim, feedeth on wind, and pursueth the east wind, all the day, falsehood and force, doth he magnify,and, a covenant with Assyria, would they solemnize, and, oil into Egypt, must be borne along.
1 O povo de Israel vive praticando maldades e gasta o dia inteiro fazendo coisas que não têm valor. As mentiras e os crimes continuam a aumentar. Israel faz acordos com a Assíria e manda azeite de presente para o Egito.
2 But, a controversy, hath Yahweh with Judah,so that he may bring punishment on Jacob, according to his ways, According to his doings, repay him.
2 O Senhor Deus tem uma acusação contra o povo de Judá e vai castigar o povo de Israel por causa dos seus pecados.
3 In the womb, took he his brother by the heel; and, in his manly vigour, strove he with God:
3 Jacó, o antepassado deles, lutou com o seu irmão gêmeo Esaú enquanto os dois ainda estavam na barriga da mãe. Já homem feito, Jacó lutou com Deus;
4 Yea he strove against a Messenger, and prevailed, he wept, and made supplication unto him,At Bethel, he found him, and, there, he spake with us;
4 ele lutou com um anjo e venceu. Então chorou e pediu que o anjo o abençoasse. Deus o encontrou em Betel e ali falou com ele.
5 And, Yahweh, is God of host,Yahweh, is his memorial.
5 Esse foi o Senhor , o Deus Todo-Poderoso. O seu nome é !
6 Thou, therefore, by thy God, shalt return,lovingkindness and justice, do thou keep, so wait thou for thy God, continually.
6 Portanto, povo de Israel, volte de novo ao seu Deus, faça o que é bom e certo e confie sempre nele.
7 A trafficker! in his hand, are balances of deceit, to oppress, he loveth.
7 O Senhor Deus diz: — Os israelitas são como os cananeus: são desonestos e usam balanças falsas para explorar os outros.
8 So then Ephraim said, Surely I have gotten me riches, I have found wealth for myself,in all my toils, they cannot find in me perversity which is sin.
8 Eles dizem: “É verdade que somos ricos, mas ninguém pode nos acusar de termos ajuntado a nossa riqueza por meios desonestos.”
9 But, I, Yahweh, have been thy God, from the land of Egypt,I will yet make thee dwell in tents, as in the days of appointed meeting.
9 Porém eu, o Senhor , sou o Deus de vocês desde que os tirei do Egito; eu farei com que vocês voltem a morar em barracas, como moravam quando me encontrei com vocês no deserto.
10 And I will lay my word upon the prophets, yea, I myself, have magnified, vision,and, by the hand of the prophets, will I use similitudes.
10 — Eu falei com os profetas e lhes dei muitas visões; usei comparações quando falei ao povo por meio dos profetas.
11 If, Gilead, is in sorrow, surely false, have they been, In Gilgal, have they sacrificed, bullocks,their very altars, shall become as heaps upon the furrows of the field.
11 Mas o povo de Gileade adora ídolos e por isso vai ser morto. Em Gilgal touros são sacrificados no altar; por isso, os altares vão virar montes de pedras nos campos arados.
12 When Jacob fled to the country of Syria, then Israel served for a wife, and, for a wife, he watched over a flock.
12 O nosso antepassado Jacó teve de fugir para a Mesopotâmia e trabalhou como pastor de ovelhas a fim de conseguir uma esposa.
13 And, by a prophet, Yahweh, brought up, Israel out of Egypt,and, by a prophet, was he watched over.
13 Por meio do profeta Moisés, o Senhor Deus tirou o povo de Israel do Egito e cuidou deles.
14 Ephraim hath provoked, very bitterly,his own blood, therefore, upon him, will he leave, and, his reproach, shall his Lord, bring back to him.
14 Com os seus pecados, o povo de Israel provocou a ira do Senhor ; por isso, ele fará com que paguem pelos crimes que cometeram e os castigará por causa das suas maldades.
