1 And it came to pass, when they heard,namely, all the kings who were over the Jordan, in the hill country and in the lowland, and in all the coast of the great sea, over against the Lebanon,the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite;
1 E souberam disso todos os reis que viviam a oeste do Jordão, nas montanhas, na Sefelá e em todo o litoral do mar Grande até o Líbano. Eram os reis dos hititas, dos amorreus, dos cananeus, dos ferezeus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus.
2 then gathered they themselves together as one man, to fight with Joshua, and with Israel,with one accord.
2 Eles se ajuntaram para guerrear contra Josué, contra Israel.
3 Now, the inhabitants of Gibeon, heard that which Joshua had done unto Jericho and unto Ai;
3 Contudo, quando os habitantes de Gibeom souberam o que Josué tinha feito com Jericó e Ai,
4 they, however, acted craftily, and went and started,and took old sacks for their asses, and leathern wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
4 recorreram a um ardil. Enviaram uma delegação, com jumentos carregados de sacos gastos e vasilhas de couro velhas, rachadas e remendadas.
5 and sandals, old and patched, upon their feet, and worn-out mantles upon them,and, all the bread of their provision, was dry and broken.
5 Os homens calçavam sandálias gastas e remendadas e vestiam roupas velhas. Todos os pães do suprimento deles estavam secos e esmigalhados.
6 So they took their journey unto Joshua, unto the camp, at Gilgal,and said unto him, and unto the men of Israel, From a far country, are we come, Now, therefore, solemnise with us a covenant.
6 Foram a Josué, ao acampamento de Gilgal, e disseram a ele e aos homens de Israel: "Viemos de uma terra distante. Queremos que façam um acordo conosco".
7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites,Peradventure, in our midst, ye are dwelling, how then can we solemnise with you a covenant?
7 Os israelitas disseram aos heveus: "Talvez vocês vivam perto de nós. Como poderemos fazer um acordo com vocês? "
8 And they said unto Joshua: Thy servants, we are. And Joshua said unto them: Who, are ye? And, from whence, come ye?
8 "Somos seus servos", disseram a Josué. Josué, porém, perguntou: "Quem são vocês? De onde vocês vêm? "
9 And they said unto himFrom a very far country, have thy servants come, because of the name of Yahweh thy God,because we had heard his fame, and all that he had done in Egypt;
9 Ele responderam: "Seus servos vieram de uma terra muito distante por causa da fama do Senhor, do seu Deus. Pois ouvimos falar dele, de tudo o que fez no Egito,
10 and all that he had done unto the two kings of the Amorites who were over the Jordan,unto Sihon, king of Heshbon, and unto Og, king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth.
10 e de tudo o que fez aos dois reis dos amorreus a leste do Jordão: Seom, rei de Hesbom, e Ogue, rei de Basã, que reinava em Asterote.
11 So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land spake unto us, sayingTake ye, in your hand, provision for the journey, and go your way to meet them,then shall ye say unto them, Your servants, we are. Now, therefore, solemnise with us a covenant.
11 E os nossos líderes e todos os habitantes de nossa terra nos disseram: ‘Juntem provisões para a viagem, vão encontrar-se com eles e digam-lhes: Somos seus servos, façam um acordo conosco’.
12 This our bread, took we, hot, for our provision, out of our houses, on the day we came forth to journey unto you,but, now, lo! it is dry, yea it is broken;
12 Este nosso pão estava quente quando o embrulhamos em casa no dia em que saímos de viagem para cá. Mas vejam como agora está seco e esmigalhado.
13 and, these leathern wine bottles, which we filled new, lo! also, they are rent,and, as for these our mantles and our sandals, they are worn out, by reason of the very long journey.
13 Estas vasilhas de couro que enchemos de vinho eram novas, mas agora estão rachadas. E as nossas roupas e sandálias estão gastas por causa da longa viagem".
14 So the men took of their provision,but, the bidding of Yahweh, had they not asked.
14 Os israelitas examinaram as provisões dos heveus, mas não consultaram o Senhor.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and solemnised with them a covenant to let them live,and the princes of the assembly, entered into an oath with them.
15 Então Josué fez um acordo de paz com eles, garantindo poupar-lhes a vida, e os líderes da comunidade o ratificaram com juramento.
16 And it came to pass, at the end of three days after they had solemnised with them a covenant, that they heard that, near neighbours, they were unto them, and, in their midst, they were dwelling.
16 Três dias depois de fazerem o acordo com os gibeonitas, os israelitas souberam que eram vizinhos e que viviam perto deles.
17 So the sons of Israel brake up, and came in unto their cities on the third day,their cities, being Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
17 Por isso partiram de viagem, e três dias depois chegaram às cidades dos heveus, que eram Gibeom, Quefira, Beerote e Quiriate-Jearim.
18 And the sons of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Yahweh, God of Israel,but all the assembly murmured against the princes.
18 Mas não os atacaram, porque os líderes da comunidade lhes haviam feito um juramento em nome do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Toda a comunidade, porém, queixou-se contra os líderes,
19 And all the princes said unto all the assembly, We, have sworn unto them, by Yahweh, God of Israel,now, therefore, we may not touch them.
19 que lhes responderam: "Fizemos a eles o nosso juramento em nome do Senhor, o Deus de Israel; por isso não podemos tocar neles.
20 This, will we do unto them, even let them live,lest there come on us wrath, because of the oath which we have sworn unto them.
20 Todavia, nós os trataremos assim: Vamos deixá-los viver, para que não caia sobre nós a ira divina por quebrarmos o juramento que lhes fizemos".
21 And the princes said unto themLet them live. So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the assembly, as the princes spake unto them.
21 E acrescentaram: "Eles ficarão vivos, mas serão lenhadores e carregadores de água para toda a comunidade". E assim se manteve a promessa dos líderes.
22 And Joshua called for them, and spake unto them, saying,Wherefore did ye deceive us, sayingWe are, very far, from you, whereas, ye, in our midst, are dwelling?
22 Então Josué convocou os gibeonitas e disse: "Por que vocês nos enganaram dizendo que viviam muito longe de nós, quando na verdade vivem perto?
23 Now, therefore, accursed, ye are,and ye shall not cease to be in bond-service as hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.
23 Agora vocês estão debaixo de maldição: Nunca deixarão de ser escravos, rachando lenha e carregando água para a casa do meu Deus".
24 And they responded to Joshua, and saidBecause it was, plainly told, thy servants, how that Yahweh thy God had commanded Moses his servant to give unto you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you,therefore feared we greatly, for our lives, because of you, and did this thing.
24 Eles responderam a Josué: "Os seus servos ficaram sabendo como o Senhor, o seu Deus, ordenou que o seu servo Moisés lhes desse toda esta terra e que destruísse todos os seus habitantes da presença de vocês. Tivemos medo do que poderia acontecer conosco por causa de vocês. Por isso agimos assim.
25 Now, therefore, here we are, in thy hand,as may be good and right in thine eyes, to do unto us, do.
25 Estamos agora nas suas mãos. Faça conosco o que lhe parecer bom e justo".
26 And he did to them so,and rescued them out of the hand of the sons of Israel, and they slew them not.
26 Josué então os protegeu e não permitiu que os matassem.
27 And Joshua appointed them that day to be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto the assembly,and unto the altar of Yahweh,
27 Mas naquele dia fez dos gibeonitas lenhadores e carregadores de água para a comunidade e para o altar do Senhor, no local que o Senhor escolhesse. É o que eles são até hoje.
