1 Here was an evil, I had seen under the sun,and it is, common, among men:
1 Há um mal que vi debaixo do sol e que pesa sobre a humanidade:
2 A man to whom God giveth riches and gains and honour, so that nothing doth he lack for his soulof all that he craveth, and yet God doth not give him power to eat thereof, but, a man unknown, eateth it,this, was vanity, and, an incurable evil, it was.
2 aquele a quem Deus conferiu riquezas, bens e honra, e nada lhe falta de tudo o que a sua alma deseja, mas Deus não lhe concede que desfrute disso; ficará para um estranho. Também isto é vaidade e grande mal.
3 Though a man should beget a hundred children, and live, many years, so that many should be the days of his years but, his own soul, should not be satisfied with the good, and he should not even have, a burial, I said, Better than he, is an untimely birth!
3 Se alguém gerar cem filhos e viver muitos anos, até uma idade avançada, e se a sua alma não se fartar do bem, e além disso não tiver sepultura, digo que um aborto é mais feliz do que ele.
4 For, in vain, it came in, and, in darkness, it departeth,and, with darkness, its name, is covered:
4 Pois o aborto vem ao mundo para nada e desaparece na calada da noite, e as trevas encobrem o seu nome.
5 even the sun, it never saw, nor aught did it know,more quietness, hath this than the other.
5 Não viu o sol, nada conhece, porém tem mais descanso do que o outro,
6 Even though one hath lived a thousand years twice told, yet, good, hath he not seen,is it not, unto one place, that, all, are going?
6 ainda que aquele vivesse duas vezes mil anos, mas não desfrutasse do bem. Por acaso, não vão todos para o mesmo lugar?
7 All the toil of man, is for his mouth,though, even the desire, is not satisfied!
7 Todo trabalho do ser humano é para a sua boca; contudo, o seu apetite nunca se satisfaz.
8 For what profit hath the wise man, over the dullard? What can, the poor man, knowso as to walk before the living?
8 Pois que vantagem tem o sábio sobre o tolo? Ou o pobre que sabe como sobreviver?
9 Better what the eyes behold, than the wandering of desire,even this, was vanity, and a feeding on wind.
9 Melhor é o que os olhos veem do que aquilo que a alma deseja. Também isto é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
10 Whatsoever one may be, long ago, was he called by his name, and it is known that it isSon of Earth,he cannot, therefore, contend with one stronger than he.
10 Tudo o que agora existe já recebeu um nome há muito tempo. E sabe-se o que é o ser humano, e que não pode enfrentar quem é mais forte do que ele.
11 Seeing there are things in abundance which make vanity abound, what profit hath man?
11 Quando aumentam as palavras, aumenta a vaidade. Qual o proveito que se tem disso?
12 For who knoweth what is good for a man throughout his life, for the number of the days of his life of vanity, seeing he will make them, like a shadow,for who can tell a man, what shall be after him, under the sun?
12 Pois quem sabe o que é bom para uma pessoa durante os poucos dias da sua vida de vaidade, os quais ela gasta como sombra? Quem poderá lhe dizer o que vai acontecer debaixo do sol depois que ela morrer?
