1 There is an evil that I have seen under the sun and it is prevalent among men.
1 Há um mal que vi debaixo do sol e que pesa sobre a humanidade:
2 God has given man riches, wealth and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires. Yet God has not empowered him to partake of them for a foreigner enjoys them. This is vanity and a severe affliction.
2 aquele a quem Deus conferiu riquezas, bens e honra, e nada lhe falta de tudo o que a sua alma deseja, mas Deus não lhe concede que desfrute disso; ficará para um estranho. Também isto é vaidade e grande mal.
3 A man can have a hundred children and live many years. If he does not enjoy prosperity and have a decent burial, a stillborn child is better off then he.
3 Se alguém gerar cem filhos e viver muitos anos, até uma idade avançada, e se a sua alma não se fartar do bem, e além disso não tiver sepultura, digo que um aborto é mais feliz do que ele.
4 For he comes in with vanity and departs in darkness, and his name will be covered with darkness.
4 Pois o aborto vem ao mundo para nada e desaparece na calada da noite, e as trevas encobrem o seu nome.
5 »Moreover he has not seen the sun nor known anything. The stillborn child has more rest than the other.
5 Não viu o sol, nada conhece, porém tem mais descanso do que o outro,
6 »Even though he lives a thousand years twice over, yet he has seen no good. Do not all go to one place?«
6 ainda que aquele vivesse duas vezes mil anos, mas não desfrutasse do bem. Por acaso, não vão todos para o mesmo lugar?
7 All the labor of man is for his mouth and yet the appetite is not satisfied.
7 Todo trabalho do ser humano é para a sua boca; contudo, o seu apetite nunca se satisfaz.
8 What does the wise have more than the fool? What does the poor have knowing how to walk before man?
8 Pois que vantagem tem o sábio sobre o tolo? Ou o pobre que sabe como sobreviver?
9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering after the desire. This is also vanity and a striving after wind.
9 Melhor é o que os olhos veem do que aquilo que a alma deseja. Também isto é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
10 That which exists is named already. It is known and he cannot dispute with the one that is mightier than he.
10 Tudo o que agora existe já recebeu um nome há muito tempo. E sabe-se o que é o ser humano, e que não pode enfrentar quem é mais forte do que ele.
11 Seeing there is much that increases futility, what outcome is there for man?
11 Quando aumentam as palavras, aumenta a vaidade. Qual o proveito que se tem disso?
12 Who knows what is good for man in this life? Are all the days of his vain life that he spends like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will happen after his existence under the sun?
12 Pois quem sabe o que é bom para uma pessoa durante os poucos dias da sua vida de vaidade, os quais ela gasta como sombra? Quem poderá lhe dizer o que vai acontecer debaixo do sol depois que ela morrer?
