1 »Men, brothers and fathers, hear my defense to you now.«
1 “Irmãos e pais”, disse Paulo. “Ouçam-me enquanto apresento minha defesa.”
2 They heard him speak in the Hebrew tongue and became quiet.
2 Quando o ouviram falar em aramaico, o silêncio foi ainda maior.
3 »I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up here in Jerusalem as a student of Gamaliel. I received instruction in the Law of our ancestors and was just as zealous for God as are all of you.
3 Então Paulo disse: “Sou judeu, nascido em Tarso, cidade da Cilícia. Fui criado aqui em Jerusalém e educado por Gamaliel. Como aluno dele, fui instruído rigorosamente em nossas leis e nos costumes judaicos. Tornei-me muito zeloso de honrar a Deus em tudo que fazia, como vocês são hoje.
4 »I persecuted the people who followed this Way to the point of death. I arrested men and women and threw them into prison.
4 E fui ao encalço dos seguidores do Caminho, perseguindo alguns até a morte, prendendo homens e mulheres e lançando-os na prisão.
5 »The High Priest and the whole Council can prove that I am telling the truth. I received letters from them written to fellow Jews in Damascus, so I went there to arrest these people and bring them back in chains to Jerusalem to be punished.
5 O sumo sacerdote e todo o conselho dos líderes do povo podem confirmar isso. Recebi deles cartas para nossos irmãos judeus em Damasco que me autorizavam a trazer os seguidores do Caminho de lá para Jerusalém, em cadeias, para serem castigados.
6 »While I was traveling I came near Damascus about midday. Suddenly a bright light from the sky flashed around me.
6 “Quando me aproximava de Damasco, por volta do meio-dia, de repente uma luz muito intensa brilhou ao meu redor.
7 »I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me: Saul, Saul! Why do you persecute me?
7 Caí no chão e ouvi uma voz que me disse: ‘Saulo, Saulo, por que você me persegue?’.
8 »Who are you, Lord?« I asked. »I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute,« he said to me.
8 “‘Quem és tu, Senhor?’, perguntei. “E a voz respondeu: ‘Sou Jesus, o nazareno,
9 »Everyone with me saw the light. They did not hear the voice of the one speaking to me.
9 Os que me acompanhavam viram a luz, mas não entenderam a voz daquele que falava comigo.
10 »I asked: What shall I do, Lord? He said: Go to Damascus. There you will be told what God wants you to do.
10 “Então perguntei: ‘Que devo fazer, Senhor?’. “E o Senhor me disse: ‘Levante-se e entre em Damasco, onde lhe dirão tudo que você deve fazer’.
11 »I was blind because of the bright light. So my companions took me by the hand and led me to Damascus.
11 “A luz intensa havia me deixado cego, e meus companheiros tiveram de levar-me pela mão a Damasco.
12 »A man named Ananias was in that city. He is a religious man who obeyed our Law and was highly respected by all the Jews living there.
12 Vivia ali Ananias, um homem devoto, dedicado à lei e muito respeitado por todos os judeus da cidade.
13 »He came and stood by me, and said: Brother Saul, see again! At that very moment I saw again and looked at him.
13 Ele veio, colocou-se ao meu lado e disse: ‘Irmão Saulo, volte a enxergar’. E, naquele mesmo instante, pude vê-lo.
14 »He said: The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will. You are to see his righteous servant, and to hear him speak with his own voice.
14 “Então ele disse: ‘O Deus de nossos antepassados escolheu você para conhecer a vontade dele e para ver o Justo e ouvi-lo falar.
15 You will be a witness for him to tell everyone what you have seen and heard.
15 Você será testemunha dele, dizendo a todos o que viu e ouviu.
16 Wait no longer! Get up and be baptized and have your sins washed away by praying to him.
16 O que está esperando? Levante-se e seja batizado! Fique limpo de seus pecados invocando o nome do Senhor’.
17 »I went back to Jerusalem. Then I have a vision while I prayed in the temple.
17 “Depois que voltei a Jerusalém, estava orando no templo e tive uma visão,
18 »I saw the Lord. He said to me: Hurry and leave Jerusalem because the people here will not accept your witness about me.
18 na qual o Senhor me dizia: ‘Depressa! Saia de Jerusalém, pois o povo daqui não aceitará seu testemunho a meu respeito’.
19 »I answered, Lord they know very well that I went to the synagogues and arrested and beat those who believe in you.
19 “E eu respondi: ‘Senhor, sem dúvida eles sabem que em cada sinagoga eu prendia e açoitava aqueles que criam em ti.
20 »When your witness Stephen was put to death, I was there, approving of his murder and taking care of the coats of his murderers.«
20 E quando Estêvão, tua testemunha, foi morto, eu estava inteiramente de acordo. Fiquei ali e guardei os mantos que eles tiraram quando foram apedrejá-lo’.
21 »The Lord said: Go! I will send you far away to the people of the nations.
21 “Mas o Senhor me disse: ‘Vá, pois eu o enviarei para longe, para os gentios’”.
22 The people listened to Paul until he said this. Then they shouted at the top of their voices: »Away with him! Kill him! He is not fit to live!«
22 A multidão ouviu Paulo até ele dizer essa palavra. Então começaram a gritar: “Fora com esse sujeito! Ele não merece viver!”.
23 They were screaming, throwing off their clothes, and throwing dust up in the air.
23 Gritavam, arrancavam seus mantos e jogavam poeira para o alto.
24 The Roman commander ordered his men to take Paul into the barracks. He told them to whip him in order to find out why the Jews were screaming like this against him.
24 O comandante trouxe Paulo para dentro e ordenou que ele fosse açoitado e interrogado a fim de descobrir por que a multidão tinha ficado tão furiosa.
25 When they tied him up to be whipped Paul said to the officer standing there, »Is it lawful for you to whip a Roman citizen who has not been tried for a crime?«
25 Quando amarravam Paulo para açoitá-lo, ele disse ao oficial que estava ali: “A lei permite açoitar um cidadão romano sem que ele tenha sido julgado?”.
26 When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked him: »What are you doing? That man is a Roman citizen!«
26 Ao ouvir isso, o oficial foi ao comandante e perguntou: “O que o senhor está fazendo? Este homem é cidadão romano!”.
27 The commander went to Paul and asked him: »Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?« »Yes,« answered Paul.
27 O comandante perguntou a Paulo: “Diga-me, você é cidadão romano?”. Ele respondeu: “Sim, eu sou”.
28 The commander said: »I became one by paying a large amount of money.« »I am one by birth,« Paul answered.
28 “Eu também”, disse o comandante. “E paguei caro por minha cidadania!” Paulo respondeu: “Mas eu sou cidadão de nascimento”.
29 At once the men who were going to question Paul drew back from him. The commander was frightened when he found out that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had put him in chains.
29 Quando os soldados que estavam prestes a interrogar Paulo ouviram que ele era cidadão romano, retiraram-se de imediato. Até mesmo o comandante ficou com medo ao saber que Paulo era cidadão romano, pois tinha mandado amarrá-lo.
30 The commander wanted to find out for sure what the Jews were accusing Paul of. The next day he had Pauls chains taken off and ordered the chief priests and the whole Council to meet. Then he took Paul and made him stand before them.
30 No dia seguinte, o comandante ordenou que os principais sacerdotes se reunissem com o conselho dos líderes do povo. Queria descobrir exatamente qual era o problema, por isso soltou Paulo e mandou que o trouxessem diante deles.
