1 Then Job answered and said,
1 Então, Jó respondeu e disse:
2 I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just before God?
2 Eu sei que isso é uma verdade; mas como deveria o homem ser justo com Deus?
3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
3 Se quiser contender com ele, não poderá lhe responder uma entre mil razões.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered?
4 Ele é sábio no coração, e poderoso em força; quem se endureceu contra ele e prosperou?
5 Who removes the mountains, and they know not: who overturns them in his anger.
5 O qual remove os montes, sem que o saibam, o que os derruba na sua ira.
6 Who shakes the earth out of its place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
6 Que sacode a terra do seu lugar, e os seus pilares estremecem.
7 Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and seals up the stars.
7 Que comanda o sol, e ele não sai, e sela as estrelas.
8 Who alone spreads out the heavens, and treads upon the waves of the sea.
8 Que sozinho estende os céus, e pisa sobre as ondas do mar.
9 Who makes the Bear, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
9 Que fez a Ursa, o Órion, e as Plêiadas, e as câmaras do sul.
10 Who does great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
10 Que faz grandes coisas, longe de se descobrir; sim, e maravilhas sem número.
11 Lo, he goes by me, and I see him not: he passes on also, but I perceive him not.
11 Eis que ele passa por mim, e eu não o vejo; ele passa também, mas eu não o percebo.
12 Behold, he takes away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What do you?
12 Eis que ele leva embora; quem pode impedi-lo? Quem lhe dirá: O que fazes tu?
13 If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do bow before him.
13 Se Deus não retirar a sua ira, os auxiliadores orgulhosos curvam-se debaixo dele.
14 How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
14 Quanto menos lhe responderei eu, e escolherei minhas palavras para argumentar com ele?
15 For, though I were righteous, yet could I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
15 A quem, embora eu fosse justo, ainda assim não lhe responderia, mas faria súplicas ao meu juiz.
16 If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
16 Se eu tivesse chamado, e ele tivesse me respondido, ainda assim eu não acreditaria que ele tivesse ouvido a minha voz.
17 For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.
17 Porque ele me quebranta com uma tempestade, e multiplica as minhas feridas sem causa.
18 He will not permit me to take my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
18 Ele não me permite tomar minha respiração, mas enche-me de amargura.
19 If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of justice, who shall set me a time to plead?
19 Se eu falar de força, eis que ele é forte; e de juízo, quem me determinará um tempo para pleitear?
20 If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am blameless, it shall also prove me perverse.
20 Se eu me justificar, a minha própria boca me condenará; se eu disser: Eu sou perfeito, ela também me provará perverso.
21 Though I were blameless, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
21 Ainda que eu fosse perfeito, contudo eu não conheceria a minha alma; eu desprezaria a minha vida.
22 This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the blameless and the wicked.
22 A coisa é esta; portanto eu a disse: Ele destrói o perfeito e o ímpio.
23 If the scourge slays suddenly, he will laugh at the plight of the innocent.
23 Se o açoite matar de repente, ele rirá do julgamento do inocente.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covers the faces of its judges; if not he, who then is it?
24 A terra é entregue nas mãos do ímpio; ele cobre a face dos seus juízes; se não, onde, e quem é ele?
25 Now my days are swifter than a runner: they flee away, they see no good.
25 Ora os meus dias são mais rápidos do que um mensageiro; eles fogem, não veem o bem.
26 They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hastens to the prey.
26 Eles passam como navios rápidos; como a águia que se lança à presa.
27 If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
27 Se eu disser: Eu me esquecerei da minha queixa, abandonarei o meu peso e consolar-me-ei.
28 I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent.
28 Eu tenho medo de todos os meus sofrimentos; sei que não me terás por inocente.
29 If I am wicked, why then labor I in vain?
29 Se eu for ímpio, por que então eu trabalho em vão?
30 If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands ever so clean;
30 Se eu me lavar com água de neve, e tornar minhas mãos limpas como nunca;
31 Yet shall you plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.
31 ainda assim me mergulharás na vala, e as minhas próprias vestes me abominarão.
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in trial.
32 Porque ele não é um homem, como eu sou, para que eu deva responder-lhe, e para que cheguemos juntos em juízo.
33 Neither is there any mediator between us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
33 Nem há nenhum mediador entre nós, que pudesse pôr a sua mão sobre nós dois.
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
34 Leve ele a sua vara para longe de mim, e que seu medo não me aterrorize;
35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
35 então eu falaria e não o temeria; mas isto não é assim comigo.
