1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
1 Então, o SENHOR respondeu a Jó, através do redemoinho de vento, e disse:
2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
2 Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento?
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me.
3 Cinge agora os teus lombos, como um homem; porque eu exigirei de ti, e tu me responderás.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast the understanding.
4 Onde estavas tu quando eu fundava a terra? Declara-o, se tens entendimento.
5 Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?
5 Quem lhes pôs as medidas, se é que o sabes? Ou quem estendeu a linha sobre ela?
6 Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,
6 Sobre o que estão presos os seus fundamentos? Ou quem assentou a sua pedra de esquina,
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
7 quando as estrelas da manhã cantavam juntas, e todos os filhos de Deus gritavam de alegria?
8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, and issued out of the womb;
8 Ou quem encerrou o mar com portas, quando este irrompeu, como se tivesse saído do útero?
9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
9 Quando eu fiz das nuvens sua vestidura, e da espessa escuridão uma faixa para ela;
10 And prescribed for it My decree, and set bars and doors,
10 e quando estabeleci sobre ele meu limite, e coloquei barras e portas,
11 And said: 'Thus far shalt thou come, but no further; and here shall thy proud waves be stayed'?
11 e disse: Até aqui tu virás, porém não mais adiante, e aqui ficarão as tuas ondas orgulhosas?
12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, and caused the dayspring to know its place;
12 Comandaste tu a manhã desde teus dias; e fizeste a aurora para conhecer seu lugar;
13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?
13 para que tomasse os confins da terra, para que os perversos pudessem ser sacudidos dela?
14 It is changed as clay under the seal; and they stand as a garment.
14 Ela é transformada em barro para selar; e permanece como uma vestimenta.
15 But from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm is broken.
15 E dos perversos a sua luz é retida, e o braço altivo será quebrado.
16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?
16 Ou entraste tu nas fontes do mar, ou andaste em busca da profundidade?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
17 Tem sido abertos os portões da morte para ti? Ou viste as portas da sombra da morte?
18 Hast thou surveyed unto the breadths of the earth? Declare, if thou knowest it all.
18 Tu percebeste a largura da terra? Declara se sabes de tudo isto.
19 Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and as for darkness, where is the place thereof;
19 Onde está o caminho onde a luz habita? E, quanto às trevas, onde está o seu lugar;
20 That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
20 poderás conduzi-la a seus limites, e para que saibas as veredas para a sua casa?
21 Thou knowest it, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
21 Sabes tu isso, porque tu eras então nascido, ou porque o número dos teus dias é grande?
22 Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, or hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail,
22 Entraste tu nos tesouros da neve? Ou viste os tesouros do granizo,
23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
23 que eu tenho reservado contra os tempos de tribulação, para o dia da batalha e guerra?
24 By what way is the light parted, or the east wind scattered upon the earth?
24 Por qual caminho se difunde a luz, que espalha o vento do leste sobre a terra?
25 Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, or a way for the lightning of the thunder;
25 Quem dividiu um curso de água para que as águas fluíssem, ou um caminho para o relâmpago do trovão;
26 To cause it to rain on a land where no man is, on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
26 para fazer com que chova sobre a terra, onde nenhum homem está, no deserto, onde não há homem;
27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground, and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
27 para satisfazer o chão assolado e gasto, e para fazer com que o broto da tenra erva germine?
28 Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
28 Tem a chuva um pai? Ou quem gerou as gotas do orvalho?
29 Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoar-frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
29 Do ventre de quem veio o gelo? E a branca geada do céu, quem a gerou?
30 The waters are congealed like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
30 As águas se escondem como se fossem uma pedra, e a face do abismo se congela.
31 Canst thou bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
31 Poderás anular os laços das Plêiades ou soltar as faixas do Órion?
32 Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her sons?
32 Podes tu abrir a Mazzaroth em seu tempo? Podes guiar Ursa com seus filhos?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?
33 Sabes tu as ordenanças do céu, ou podes estabelecer o domínio dele sobre a terra?
34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
34 Tu podes levantar a tua voz até as nuvens, para que a abundância das águas possam te cobrir?
35 Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee: 'Here we are'?
35 Tu podes enviar os raios para que vão e te digam: Aqui estamos nós?
36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind?
36 Quem pôs a sabedoria no íntimo? Ou quem deu entendimento ao coração?
37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,
37 Quem pode enumerar as nuvens com sabedoria? Ou quem pode esvaziar os odres do céu?
38 When the dust runneth into a mass, and the clods cleave fast together?
38 Quando o pó se funde em uma massa, e os torrões se unem rapidamente?
39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lioness? Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
39 Caçarás tu a presa para o leão, ou saciarás o apetite dos jovens leões,
40 When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
40 quando eles se aninharem em seus covis, e ficam nas covas à espreita?
41 Who provideth for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry unto God, and wander for lack of food?
41 Quem provê para os corvos o seu alimento, quando os seus filhotes clamam a Deus, e vagueiam por falta de alimento?
