1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he left there to teach and preach in their cities.
1 E aconteceu que, acabando Jesus de dar instruções aos seus doze discípulos, partiu dali a ensinar e a pregar nas cidades deles.
2 Now when John in prison heard about the activities of Christ, he sent a message by his disciples
2 E João, ouvindo no cárcere falar dos feitos de Cristo, enviou dois dos seus discípulos,
3 and asked him, “Are you the Coming One, or should we wait for someone else?”
3 A dizer-lhe: És tu aquele que havia de vir, ou esperamos outro?
4 Jesus answered them,“Go and tell John what you hear and observe:
4 E Jesus, respondendo, disse-lhes: Ide, e anunciai a João as coisas que ouvis e vedes:
5 the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the destitute hear the good news.
5 Os cegos vêem, e os coxos andam; os leprosos são limpos, e os surdos ouvem; os mortos são ressuscitados, e aos pobres é anunciado o evangelho.
6 How blessed is anyone who is not offended by me!”
6 E bem-aventurado é aquele que não se escandalizar em mim.
7 As they were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John.“What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
7 E, partindo eles, começou Jesus a dizer às turbas, a respeito de João: Que fostes ver no deserto? uma cana agitada pelo vento?
8 Really, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? See, those who wear fancy clothes live in kings’ houses.
8 Sim, que fostes ver? um homem ricamente vestido? Os que trajam ricamente estão nas casas dos reis.
9 Really, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet!
9 Mas, então que fostes ver? um profeta? Sim, vos digo eu, e muito mais do que profeta;
10 This is the man about whom it is written,‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,who will prepare your way before you.’
10 Porque é este de quem está escrito:Eis que diante da tua face envio o meu anjo,que preparará diante de ti o teu caminho.
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has appeared who is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least important person in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 Em verdade vos digo que, entre os que de mulher têm nascido, não apareceu alguém maior do que João o Batista; mas aquele que é o menor no reino dos céus é maior do que ele.
12 “From the days of John the Baptist until the present, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing,and violent people have been attacking it.
12 E, desde os dias de João o Batista até agora, se faz violência ao reino dos céus, e pela força se apoderam dele.
13 For the Law and all the Prophets prophesied up to the time of John,
13 Porque todos os profetas e a lei profetizaram até João.
14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.
14 E, se quereis dar crédito, é este o Elias que havia de vir.
15 Let the person who has earslisten!
15 Quem tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça.
16 “To what can I compare this generation? It's like little children who sit in the marketplaces and shout to each other,
16 Mas, a quem assemelharei esta geração? É semelhante aos meninos que se assentam nas praças, e clamam aos seus companheiros,
17 ‘A wedding song we played for you,the dance you did but scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too,but then you would not mourn.’
17 E dizem: Tocamo-vos flauta, e não dançastes; cantamo-vos lamentações, e não chorastes.
18 For John didn't come eating or drinking, yetpeoplesay, ‘He has a demon!’
18 Porquanto veio João, não comendo nem bebendo, e dizem: Tem demônio.
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’Absolved from every act of sin,is wisdom by her kith and kin.”
19 Veio o Filho do homem, comendo e bebendo, e dizem: Eis aí um homem comilão e beberrão, amigo dos publicanos e pecadores. Mas a sabedoria é justificada por seus filhos.
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had taken place, because they didn't repent.
20 Então começou ele a lançar em rosto às cidades onde se operou a maior parte dos seus prodígios o não se haverem arrependido, dizendo:
21 “How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
21 Ai de ti, Corazim! ai de ti, Betsaida! porque, se em Tiro e em Sidom fossem feitos os prodígios que em vós se fizeram, há muito que se teriam arrependido, com saco e com cinza.
22 Indeed I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you!
22 Por isso eu vos digo que haverá menos rigor para Tiro e Sidom, no dia do juízo, do que para vós.
23 And you, Capernaum! You won't be lifted up to heaven, will you? You'll go down to Hades!For if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
23 E tu, Cafarnaum, que te ergues até ao céu, serás abatida até ao inferno; porque, se em Sodoma tivessem sido feitos os prodígios que em ti se operaram, teria ela permanecido até hoje.
24 Indeed I tell you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you!”
24 Eu vos digo, porém, que haverá menos rigor para os de Sodoma, no dia do juízo, do que para ti.
25 At that time Jesus said,“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from wise and intelligent people and have revealed them to infants.
25 Naquele tempo, respondendo Jesus, disse: Graças te dou, ó Pai, Senhor do céu e da terra, que ocultaste estas coisas aos sábios e entendidos, e as revelaste aos pequeninos.
26 Yes, Father, for this is what was pleasing to you.
26 Sim, ó Pai, porque assim te aprouve.
27 All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one fully knows the Son except the Father, and no one fully knows the Father except the Son and the person to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
27 Todas as coisas me foram entregues por meu Pai, e ninguém conhece o Filho, senão o Pai; e ninguém conhece o Pai, senão o Filho, e aquele a quem o Filho o quiser revelar.
28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and loaded down with burdens, and I will give you rest.
28 Vinde a mim, todos os que estais cansados e oprimidos, e eu vos aliviarei.
29 Place my yoke on you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
29 Tomai sobre vós o meu jugo, e aprendei de mim, que sou manso e humilde de coração; e encontrareis descanso para as vossas almas.
30 For my yoke is pleasant,and my burden is light.”
30 Porque o meu jugo é suave e o meu fardo é leve.
