1 This saying is trustworthy: The one who would an elder be, A noble task desires he.
1 Esta é uma palavra fiel: Se um homem deseja o ofício de bispo, boa obra deseja.
2 Therefore, an elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, stable, sensible, respectable, a lover of strangers, and teachable.
2 O bispo então deve ser irrepreensível, marido de uma esposa, vigilante, sóbrio, de bom comportamento, dado à hospitalidade, apto para ensinar;
3 He must not drink excessively or be a violent person, but instead be gentle. He must not be argumentative or a lover of money.
3 não dado ao vinho, não espancador, não cobiçoso de lucro desonesto, mas paciente, não contencioso, não avarento;
4 He must manage his own family well and have children who are submissive and respectful in every way.
4 que governe bem a sua própria casa, tendo seus filhos em sujeição, com toda a seriedade,
5 For if a man does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?
5 (porque se o homem não sabe governar a sua própria casa, como cuidará da igreja de Deus?);
6 He must not be a recent convert, or he might become arrogant and fall into the condemnation of the devil.
6 não um principiante, para que, envaidecendo-se com orgulho, não caia na condenação do diabo.
7 He must be well thought of by outsiders, lest he fall into disgrace and the trap set for him by the devil.
7 Além disso, ele deve ter também bom testemunho dos que estão de fora, para que não caia em descrédito e no laço do diabo.
8 Deacons, too, must be serious. They must not be two-faced, addicted to wine, or greedy for money.
8 Do mesmo modo os diáconos devem ser sérios, não de língua dobre, não dados a muito vinho, não cobiçosos de lucro desonesto,
9 They must hold firmly to the secret of the faith with clear consciences.
9 guardando o mistério da fé em uma pura consciência.
10 But they must first be tested. Then, if they prove to be blameless, they may become deacons.
10 E também estes sejam primeiro provados, depois pratiquem o ofício de um diácono, se forem considerados irrepreensíveis.
11 Their wives must also be serious. They must not be gossips, but instead be stable and trustworthy in everything.
11 Do mesmo modo suas mulheres devem ser sérias, não maldizentes, sóbrias e fiéis em todas as coisas.
12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife and must manage their children and their families well.
12 Os diáconos sejam maridos de uma esposa e governem bem seus filhos e suas próprias casas.
13 Those deacons who serve well gain an excellent reputation for themselves and will have great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
13 Porque os que praticarem bem o ofício de diácono adquirirão para si uma boa posição e grande confiança na fé que há em Cristo Jesus.
14 I hope to come to you soon. However, I'm writing this to you
14 Estas coisas te escrevo, esperando ir ver-te logo,
15 in case I am delayed so that you may know how one is to behave in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
15 todavia, se eu tardar, para que vós saibas como convém te comportar na casa de Deus, que é a igreja do Deus vivo, a coluna e fundamento da verdade.
16 By common confession, the secret of our godly worship is great: In flesh was he revealed to sight,Kept righteous by the Spirit's might,Adored by angels singing. To nations was he manifest,Believing souls found peace and rest,Our Lord in heaven reigning!
16 E, sem controvérsia, grande é o mistério da piedade: Deus foi manifesto na carne, justificado no Espírito, visto pelos anjos, pregado aos gentios, crido no mundo, recebido acima na glória.
