1 Surely there be many things that increase vanitie: and what auaileth it man?
1 Boa fama vale mais que bom perfume; mais vale o dia da morte que o dia do nascimento.
2 For who knoweth what is good for man in the life and in the nomber of the dayes of the life of his vanitie, seeing he maketh them as a shadowe? For who can shewe vnto man what shall be after him vnder the sunne?
2 Melhor é ir para a casa onde há luto que para a casa onde há banquete. Porque aí se vê aparecer o fim de todo homem e os vivos nele refletem.
3 A good name is better then a good oyntment, and the day of death, then the day that one is borne.
3 Tristeza vale mais que riso, porque a tristeza do semblante é boa para o coração.
4 It is better to goe to the house of mourning, then to goe to the house of feasting, because this is the ende of all men: and the liuing shall lay it to his heart.
4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, o coração dos insensatos na casa da alegria.
5 Anger is better then laughter: for by a sad looke the heart is made better.
5 É melhor ouvir a reprimenda de um sábio que a canção de um tolo,
6 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning: but the heart of fooles is in the house of mirth.
6 porque qual o crepitar dos espinhos na caldeira, tal é o riso do insensato. E isso é ainda vaidade.
7 Better it is to heare ye rebuke of a wise man, then that a man should heare the song of fooles.
7 A opressão torna um sábio insensato; os presentes corrompem o coração.
8 For like ye noyse of the thornes vnder the pot, so is the laughter of the foole: this also is vanitie.
8 Mais vale o fim de uma coisa que seu começo. Um espírito paciente vale mais que um espírito orgulhoso.
9 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad: and the rewarde destroyeth the heart.
9 Não cedas prontamente ao espírito de irritação; é no coração dos insensatos que reside a irritação.
10 The ende of a thing is better then the beginning thereof, and the pacient in spirit is better then the proude in spirit.
10 Não digas jamais: Como pode ser que os dias de outrora eram melhores que estes de agora? Porque não é a sabedoria que te inspira esta pergunta.
11 Be not thou of an hastie spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosome of fooles.
11 A sabedoria é tão boa como uma herança, e é de proveito aos que vêem o sol.
12 Say not thou, Why is it that the former dayes were better then these? for thou doest not enquire wisely of this thing.
12 Pois está-se à sombra da sabedoria como se está à sombra do dinheiro: a utilidade do saber consiste em que a sabedoria dá vida ao que a possui.
13 Wisedome is good with an inheritance, and excellent to them that see the sunne.
13 Considera a obra de Deus: quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez curvo?
14 For man shall rest in the shadowe of wisedome, and in the shadowe of siluer: but the excellencie of the knowledge of wisedome giueth life to the possessers thereof.
14 No dia da felicidade, sê alegre; no dia da desgraça, pensa; porque Deus fez uma e outra, de tal modo que o homem não descubra o futuro.
15 Beholde the worke of God: for who can make straight that which he hath made crooked?
15 No decurso de minha vã existência, vi tudo isso: há o justo que morre permanecendo justo e o ímpio que dura apesar de sua malícia.
16 In the day of wealth be of good comfort, and in the day of affliction consider: God also hath made this contrary to that, to the intent that man shoulde finde nothing after him.
16 Não sejas justo excessivamente, nem sábio além da medida. Por que te tornarias estúpido?
17 I haue seene all things in the dayes of my vanitie: there is a iust man that perisheth in his iustice, and there is a wicked man that continueth long in his malice.
17 Não sejas excessivamente mau, e não sejas insensato. Por que haverias de morrer antes de tua hora?
18 Be not thou iust ouermuch, neither make thy selfe ouerwise: wherefore shouldest thou be desolate?
18 É bom que guardes isto, e que não negligencies aquilo: porque aquele que teme a Deus, realizará uma e outra coisa.
19 Be not thou wicked ouermuch, neither be thou foolish: wherefore shouldest thou perish not in thy time?
19 A sabedoria dá ao sábio mais força que dez chefes de guerra reunidos numa cidade.
20 It is good that thou lay hold on this: but yet withdrawe not thine hand from that: for he that feareth God, shall come forth of them all.
20 Não há homem justo sobre a terra que faça o bem sem jamais pecar.
21 Wisedome shall strengthen the wise man more then ten mightie princes that are in ye citie.
21 Não prestes atenção em todas as palavras que se dizem, para que não ouças dizer que teu servo fala mal de ti;
22 Surely there is no man iust in the earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.
22 porque teu coração bem sabe que tu mesmo, muitas vezes, falaste mal dos outros.
23 Giue not thine heart also to all ye wordes that men speake, lest thou doe heare thy seruant cursing thee.
23 Tudo isso eu perscrutei com sabedoria. Eu disse comigo mesmo: Eu quero ser sábio. Mas a sabedoria ficou longe de mim.
24 For often times also thine heart knoweth that thou likewise hast cursed others.
24 Aquilo que acontece é longínquo, profundo, profundo: quem o poderá sondar?
25 All this haue I prooued by wisedome: I thought I will be wise, but it went farre from me.
25 Eu me apliquei de todo o coração a perscrutar, a sondar a sabedoria e a razão das coisas, a reconhecer que a maldade é uma loucura e a falta de razão uma demência.
26 It is farre off, what may it be? and it is a profound deepenesse, who can finde it?
26 Eu descobri que a mulher é coisa mais amarga que a morte, porque ela é um laço, e seu coração é uma rede, e suas mãos, cadeias. Aquele que é agradável a Deus lhe escapa, mas o pecador será preso por ela.
27 I haue compassed about, both I and mine heart to knowe and to enquire and to search wisedome, and reason, and to knowe the wickednesse of follie, and the foolishnesse of madnesse,
27 Eis o que encontrei, diz o Eclesiastes, procurando descobrir a razão de uma coisa depois de outra.
28 And I finde more bitter then death the woman whose heart is as nettes and snares, and her handes, as bands: he that is good before God, shalbe deliuered from her, but the sinner shall be taken by her.
28 Eis o que eu procuro continuamente sem descobrir: encontrei um homem entre mil, mas nenhuma mulher entre todas
29 Beholde, sayth the Preacher, this haue I found, seeking one by one to finde the count:
29 Somente encontrei isto: Deus criou o homem reto, mas é ele que procura os extravios.
30 And yet my soule seeketh, but I finde it not: I haue found one man of a thousand: but a woman among them all haue I not founde.

31 Onely loe, this haue I founde, that God hath made man righteous: but they haue sought many inuentions.
