1 Then Yahweh said to Jonah a second time, saying,
1 Pela segunda vez, o Senhor Deus disse a Jonas:
2 "Go immediately to that great city called Nineveh, and tell the people who live there the message that I gave you previously."
2 — Apronte-se, vá à grande cidade de Nínive e anuncie ao povo de lá a mensagem que eu vou dar a você.
3 So, this time Jonah obeyed Yahweh, and he went to Nineveh. That city was so big that a personhad to walk for three days to goeverywhere in it.
3 Jonas se aprontou e foi a Nínive, como o Senhor Deus havia ordenado. Nínive era tão grande, que uma pessoa levava três dias para atravessá-la a pé.
4 On the first day after Jonah arrived, he began walking through the city. He started proclaiming to the people, "Forty days from now, God will destroy Nineveh!"
4 Jonas entrou na cidade, andou um dia inteiro e então começou a anunciar: — Dentro de quarenta dias, Nínive será destruída!
5 The people in Nineveh believed God's message. They all decided that everyone should stop eating food, and they must dress themselves with old/rough clothes, to show that they were sorry for having sinned. So, everyone, including important people and unimportant people, did so.
5 Então os moradores de Nínive creram em Deus e resolveram que cada um devia jejuar. E todos, desde os mais importantes até os mais humildes, vestiram roupa feita de pano grosseiro a fim de mostrar que estavam arrependidos.
6 Nineveh's king heard the news about Jonah and what the people were doing. So, he took off his royal robes, and he also put on old/rough clothes. He left his palace, and sat down on cold ashes, to humble himself and show that he also was sorry for having sinned.
6 Quando o rei de Nínive soube disso, levantou-se do trono, tirou o manto , vestiu uma roupa feita de pano grosseiro e sentou-se sobre cinzas.
7 Then he sent messengers to proclaim to everyone in Nineveh:
7 Mandou também anunciar ao povo da cidade o seguinte: “Esta é uma ordem do rei e dos seus ministros. Ninguém pode comer nada. Todas as pessoas e também os animais, o gado e as ovelhas estão proibidos de comer e beber.
8 Instead, every person must put on old/rough cloth. Put old/rough cloth on your animals, too. Then everyone must pray fervently to God. And everyone must stop doing evil actions/things, and stop acting violently toward others.
8 Que todas as pessoas e animais vistam roupas feitas de pano grosseiro! Que cada pessoa ore a Deus com fervor e abandone os seus maus caminhos e as suas maldades!
9 Perhaps, if everyone does so, then God may change his mind and be merciful to us. Maybe God will stop being very angry with us, with the result that we will not die."
9 Talvez assim Deus mude de ideia. Talvez o seu furor passe, e assim não morreremos!”
10 When they all did that, God saw what they were doing, and he saw that they had stopped doing evil things. So, he pitied them, and he did not destroy them as he had threatened to do.
10 Deus viu o que eles fizeram e como abandonaram os seus maus caminhos. Então mudou de ideia e não castigou a cidade como tinha dito que faria.
