1 Then Yahweh said to Jonah a second time, saying,
1 A palavra do Senhor veio a Jonas pela segunda vez, dizendo:
2 "Go immediately to that great city called Nineveh, and tell the people who live there the message that I gave you previously."
2 — Levante-se, vá à grande cidade de Nínive e pregue contra ela a mensagem que eu lhe darei.
3 So, this time Jonah obeyed Yahweh, and he went to Nineveh. That city was so big that a personhad to walk for three days to goeverywhere in it.
3 Jonas se levantou e foi a Nínive, segundo a palavra do Senhor . Ora, Nínive era uma cidade muito importante diante de Deus; eram necessários três dias para percorrê-la.
4 On the first day after Jonah arrived, he began walking through the city. He started proclaiming to the people, "Forty days from now, God will destroy Nineveh!"
4 Jonas começou a percorrer a cidade caminho de um dia, e pregava, dizendo: — Ainda quarenta dias, e Nínive será destruída.
5 The people in Nineveh believed God's message. They all decided that everyone should stop eating food, and they must dress themselves with old/rough clothes, to show that they were sorry for having sinned. So, everyone, including important people and unimportant people, did so.
5 Os ninivitas creram em Deus. Proclamaram um jejum e vestiram roupa feita de pano de saco, desde o maior até o menor.
6 Nineveh's king heard the news about Jonah and what the people were doing. So, he took off his royal robes, and he also put on old/rough clothes. He left his palace, and sat down on cold ashes, to humble himself and show that he also was sorry for having sinned.
6 Quando esta notícia chegou ao rei de Nínive, ele se levantou do seu trono, tirou os trajes reais, cobriu-se de pano de saco e sentou-se sobre cinzas.
7 Then he sent messengers to proclaim to everyone in Nineveh:
7 E mandou proclamar e divulgar em Nínive o seguinte: — Por mandado do rei e dos seus nobres, ninguém — nem mesmo os animais, bois e ovelhas — pode comer coisa alguma; não lhes deem pasto, nem deixem que bebam água.
8 Instead, every person must put on old/rough cloth. Put old/rough cloth on your animals, too. Then everyone must pray fervently to God. And everyone must stop doing evil actions/things, and stop acting violently toward others.
8 Todos devem ser cobertos de pano de saco, tanto as pessoas como os animais. Então clamarão fortemente a Deus e se converterão, cada um do seu mau caminho e da violência que há nas suas mãos.
9 Perhaps, if everyone does so, then God may change his mind and be merciful to us. Maybe God will stop being very angry with us, with the result that we will not die."
9 Quem sabe? Talvez Deus se volte e mude de ideia, e então se afaste do furor da sua ira, para que não pereçamos.
10 When they all did that, God saw what they were doing, and he saw that they had stopped doing evil things. So, he pitied them, and he did not destroy them as he had threatened to do.
10 Deus viu o que fizeram, como se converteram do seu mau caminho; e Deus mudou de ideia quanto ao mal que tinha dito que lhes faria e não o fez.
