2 And the chief|strong="H6438" of all the people|strong="H5971", even of all the tribes|strong="H7626" of Israel|strong="H3478", presented|strong="H3320" themselves in the assembly|strong="H6951" of the people|strong="H5971" of God|strong="H0430", four|strong="H0702" hundred|strong="H3967" thousand|strong="H0505" footmen|strong="H0376" that drew|strong="H8025" sword|strong="H2719".
3 (Now the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" heard|strong="H8085" that the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" were gone up|strong="H5927" to Mizpeh|strong="H4709".) Then said|strong="H0559" the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478", Tell|strong="H1696" us, how was|strong="H1961" this wickedness|strong="H7451"?
4 And the Levite|strong="H3881", the husband|strong="H0376" of the woman|strong="H0802" that was slain|strong="H7523", answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559", I came|strong="H0935" into Gibeah|strong="H1390" that belongeth to Benjamin|strong="H1144", I and my concubine|strong="H6370", to lodge|strong="H3885".
5 And the men|strong="H1167" of Gibeah|strong="H1390" rose|strong="H6965" against me, and beset|strong="H5437" the house|strong="H1004" round about|strong="H5437" upon me by night|strong="H3915", and thought|strong="H1819" to have slain|strong="H2026" me: and my concubine|strong="H6370" have they forced|strong="H6031", that she is dead|strong="H4191".
6 And I took|strong="H0270" my concubine|strong="H6370", and cut her in pieces|strong="H5408", and sent|strong="H7971" her throughout all the country|strong="H7704" of the inheritance|strong="H5159" of Israel|strong="H3478": for they have committed|strong="H6213" lewdness|strong="H2154" and folly|strong="H5039" in Israel|strong="H3478".
7 Behold, ye are all children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478"; give|strong="H3051" here|strong="H1988" your advice|strong="H1697" and counsel|strong="H6098".
8 And all the people|strong="H5971" arose|strong="H6965" as one|strong="H0259" man|strong="H0376", saying|strong="H0559", We will not any|strong="H0376" of us go|strong="H3212" to his tent|strong="H0168", neither will we any|strong="H0376" of us turn|strong="H5493" into his house|strong="H1004".
9 But now this shall be the thing|strong="H1697" which we will do|strong="H6213" to Gibeah|strong="H1390"; we will go up by lot|strong="H1486" against it;
10 And we will take|strong="H3947" ten|strong="H6235" men|strong="H0582" of an hundred|strong="H3967" throughout all the tribes|strong="H7626" of Israel|strong="H3478", and an hundred|strong="H3967" of a thousand|strong="H0505", and a thousand|strong="H0505" out of ten thousand|strong="H7233", to fetch|strong="H3947" victual|strong="H6720" for the people|strong="H5971", that they may do|strong="H6213", when they come|strong="H0935" to Gibeah|strong="H1387" of Benjamin|strong="H1144", according to all the folly|strong="H5039" that they have wrought|strong="H6213" in Israel|strong="H3478".
11 So all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" were gathered|strong="H0622" against the city|strong="H5892", knit together|strong="H2270" as one|strong="H0259" man|strong="H0376".
12 And the tribes|strong="H7626" of Israel|strong="H3478" sent|strong="H7971" men|strong="H0582" through all the tribe|strong="H7626" of Benjamin|strong="H1144", saying|strong="H0559", What wickedness|strong="H7451" is this that is done|strong="H1961" among you?
13 Now therefore deliver|strong="H5414" us the men|strong="H0582", the children|strong="H1121" of Belial|strong="H1100", which are in Gibeah|strong="H1390", that we may put them to death|strong="H4191", and put away|strong="H1197" evil|strong="H7451" from Israel|strong="H3478". But the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" would|strong="H0014" not hearken|strong="H8085" to the voice|strong="H6963" of their brethren|strong="H0251" the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478":
14 But the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" gathered themselves together|strong="H0622" out of the cities|strong="H5892" unto Gibeah|strong="H1390", to go out|strong="H3318" to battle|strong="H4421" against the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478".
15 And the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" were numbered|strong="H6485" at that time|strong="H3117" out of the cities|strong="H5892" twenty|strong="H6242" and six|strong="H8337" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" that drew|strong="H8025" sword|strong="H2719", beside the inhabitants|strong="H3427" of Gibeah|strong="H1390", which were numbered|strong="H6485" seven|strong="H7651" hundred|strong="H3967" chosen|strong="H0977" men|strong="H0376".
16 Among all this people|strong="H5971" there were seven|strong="H7651" hundred|strong="H3967" chosen|strong="H0977" men|strong="H0376" lefthanded|strong="H0334"; every one could sling|strong="H7049" stones|strong="H0068" at an hair|strong="H8185" breadth, and not miss|strong="H2398".
17 And the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478", beside Benjamin|strong="H1144", were numbered|strong="H6485" four|strong="H0702" hundred|strong="H3967" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" that drew|strong="H8025" sword|strong="H2719": all these were men|strong="H0376" of war|strong="H4421".
18 And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" arose|strong="H6965", and went up|strong="H5927" to the house|strong="H1004" of God|strong="H0430", and asked|strong="H7592" counsel of God|strong="H0430", and said|strong="H0559", Which|strong="H4310" of us shall go up|strong="H5927" first|strong="H8462" to the battle|strong="H4421" against the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144"? And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559", Judah|strong="H3063" shall go up first|strong="H8462".
19 And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" rose up|strong="H6965" in the morning|strong="H1242", and encamped|strong="H2583" against Gibeah|strong="H1390".
20 And the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" went out|strong="H3318" to battle|strong="H4421" against Benjamin|strong="H1144"; and the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" put themselves in array|strong="H6186" to fight|strong="H4421" against them at Gibeah|strong="H1390".
21 And the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" came forth|strong="H3318" out of Gibeah|strong="H1390", and destroyed down|strong="H7843" to the ground|strong="H0776" of the Israelites|strong="H3478" that day|strong="H3117" twenty|strong="H6242" and two|strong="H8147" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376".
22 And the people|strong="H5971" the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" encouraged|strong="H2388" themselves, and set their battle|strong="H4421" again|strong="H3254" in array|strong="H6186" in the place|strong="H4725" where they put themselves in array|strong="H6186" the first|strong="H7223" day|strong="H3117".
23 (And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" went up|strong="H5927" and wept|strong="H1058" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* until even|strong="H6153", and asked|strong="H7592" counsel of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, saying|strong="H0559", Shall I go up|strong="H5066" again|strong="H3254" to battle|strong="H4421" against the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" my brother|strong="H0251"? And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559", Go up|strong="H5927" against him.)
24 And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" came near|strong="H7126" against the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" the second|strong="H8145" day|strong="H3117".
25 And Benjamin|strong="H1144" went forth|strong="H3318" against|strong="H7125" them out of Gibeah|strong="H1390" the second|strong="H8145" day|strong="H3117", and destroyed down|strong="H7843" to the ground|strong="H0776" of the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" again eighteen|strong="H8083" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376"; all these drew|strong="H8025" the sword|strong="H2719".
26 Then all the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478", and all the people|strong="H5971", went up|strong="H5927", and came|strong="H0935" unto the house|strong="H1004" of God|strong="H0430", and wept|strong="H1058", and sat|strong="H3427" there before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and fasted|strong="H6684" that day|strong="H3117" until even|strong="H6153", and offered|strong="H5927" burnt offerings|strong="H5930" and peace offerings|strong="H8002" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
27 And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" enquired|strong="H7592" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, (for the ark|strong="H0727" of the covenant|strong="H1285" of God|strong="H0430" was there in those days|strong="H3117",
28 And Phinehas|strong="H6372", the son|strong="H1121" of Eleazar|strong="H0499", the son|strong="H1121" of Aaron|strong="H0175", stood|strong="H5975" before|strong="H6440" it in those days|strong="H3117",) saying|strong="H0559", Shall I yet again|strong="H3254" go out|strong="H3318" to battle|strong="H4421" against the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" my brother|strong="H0251", or shall I cease|strong="H2308"? And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559", Go up|strong="H5927"; for to morrow|strong="H4279" I will deliver|strong="H5414" them into thine hand|strong="H3027".
29 And Israel|strong="H3478" set|strong="H7760" liers in wait|strong="H0693" round about|strong="H5439" Gibeah|strong="H1390".
30 And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" went up|strong="H5927" against the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" on the third|strong="H7992" day|strong="H3117", and put themselves in array|strong="H6186" against Gibeah|strong="H1390", as at other times|strong="H6471".
31 And the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" went out|strong="H3318" against|strong="H7125" the people|strong="H5971", and were drawn away|strong="H5423" from the city|strong="H5892"; and they began|strong="H2490" to smite|strong="H5221" of the people|strong="H5971", and kill|strong="H2491", as at other times|strong="H6471", in the highways|strong="H4546", of which one|strong="H0259" goeth up|strong="H5927" to the house|strong="H1004" of God|strong="H0430", and the other|strong="H0259" to Gibeah|strong="H1390" in the field|strong="H7704", about thirty|strong="H7970" men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478".
32 And the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" said|strong="H0559", They are smitten down|strong="H5062" before|strong="H6440" us, as at the first|strong="H7223". But the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" said|strong="H0559", Let us flee|strong="H5127", and draw|strong="H5423" them from the city|strong="H5892" unto the highways|strong="H4546".
33 And all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" rose up|strong="H6965" out of their place|strong="H4725", and put themselves in array|strong="H6186" at Baal-tamar|strong="H1193": and the liers in wait|strong="H0693" of Israel|strong="H3478" came forth|strong="H1518" out of their places|strong="H4725", even out of the meadows|strong="H4629" of Gibeah|strong="H1387".
34 And there came|strong="H0935" against|strong="H5048" Gibeah|strong="H1390" ten|strong="H6235" thousand|strong="H0505" chosen|strong="H0977" men|strong="H0376" out of all Israel|strong="H3478", and the battle|strong="H4421" was sore|strong="H3513": but they knew|strong="H3045" not that evil|strong="H7451" was near|strong="H5060" them.
35 And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* smote|strong="H5062" Benjamin|strong="H1144" before|strong="H6440" Israel|strong="H3478": and the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" destroyed|strong="H7843" of the Benjamites|strong="H1145" that day|strong="H3117" twenty|strong="H6242" and five|strong="H2568" thousand|strong="H0505" and an hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376": all these drew|strong="H8025" the sword|strong="H2719".
36 So the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" saw|strong="H7200" that they were smitten|strong="H5062": for the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" gave|strong="H5414" place|strong="H4725" to the Benjamites|strong="H1145", because they trusted|strong="H0982" unto the liers in wait|strong="H0693" which they had set|strong="H7760" beside Gibeah|strong="H1390".
37 And the liers in wait|strong="H0693" hasted|strong="H2363", and rushed|strong="H6584" upon Gibeah|strong="H1390"; and the liers in wait|strong="H0693" drew themselves along|strong="H4900", and smote|strong="H5221" all the city|strong="H5892" with the edge|strong="H6310" of the sword|strong="H2719".
38 Now there was an appointed sign|strong="H4150" between the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" and|strong="H5973" the liers in wait|strong="H0693", that they should make a great|strong="H7235" flame|strong="H4864" with smoke|strong="H6227" rise up|strong="H5927" out of the city|strong="H5892".
39 And when the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" retired|strong="H2015" in the battle|strong="H4421", Benjamin|strong="H1144" began|strong="H2490" to smite|strong="H5221" and kill|strong="H2491" of the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" about thirty|strong="H7970" persons|strong="H0376": for they said|strong="H0559", Surely|strong="H5062" they are smitten down|strong="H5062" before|strong="H6440" us, as in the first|strong="H7223" battle|strong="H4421".
40 But when the flame|strong="H4864" began|strong="H2490" to arise up|strong="H5927" out of the city|strong="H5892" with a pillar|strong="H5982" of smoke|strong="H6227", the Benjamites|strong="H1145" looked|strong="H6437" behind|strong="H0310" them, and, behold, the flame|strong="H3632" of the city|strong="H5892" ascended up|strong="H5927" to heaven|strong="H8064".
41 And when the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" turned again|strong="H2015", the men|strong="H0376" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" were amazed|strong="H0926": for they saw|strong="H7200" that evil|strong="H7451" was come|strong="H5060" upon them.
42 Therefore they turned|strong="H6437" their backs before|strong="H6440" the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" unto the way|strong="H1870" of the wilderness|strong="H4057"; but the battle|strong="H4421" overtook|strong="H1692" them; and them which came out of the cities|strong="H5892" they destroyed|strong="H7843" in the midst|strong="H8432" of them.
43 Thus they inclosed|strong="H3803" the Benjamites|strong="H1145" round about|strong="H3803", and chased|strong="H7291" them, and trode them down|strong="H1869" with ease|strong="H4496" over against|strong="H5227" Gibeah|strong="H1390" toward the sunrising|strong="H4217".
44 And there fell|strong="H5307" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" eighteen|strong="H8083" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376"; all these were men|strong="H0582" of valour|strong="H2428".
45 And they turned|strong="H6437" and fled|strong="H5127" toward the wilderness|strong="H4057" unto the rock|strong="H5553" of Rimmon|strong="H7417": and they gleaned|strong="H5953" of them in the highways|strong="H4546" five|strong="H2568" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376"; and pursued|strong="H1692" hard after|strong="H0310" them unto Gidom|strong="H1440", and slew|strong="H5221" two thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" of them.
46 So that all which fell|strong="H5307" that day|strong="H3117" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" were twenty|strong="H6242" and five|strong="H2568" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" that drew|strong="H8025" the sword|strong="H2719"; all these were men|strong="H0582" of valour|strong="H2428".
47 But six|strong="H8337" hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376" turned|strong="H6437" and fled|strong="H5127" to the wilderness|strong="H4057" unto the rock|strong="H5553" Rimmon|strong="H7417", and abode|strong="H3427" in the rock|strong="H5553" Rimmon|strong="H7417" four|strong="H0702" months|strong="H2320".
48 And the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" turned again|strong="H7725" upon the children|strong="H1121" of Benjamin|strong="H1144", and smote|strong="H5221" them with the edge|strong="H6310" of the sword|strong="H2719", as well the men|strong="H4974" of every city|strong="H5892", as|strong="H5704" the beast|strong="H0929", and all that came to hand|strong="H4672": also they set|strong="H7971" on fire|strong="H0784" all the cities|strong="H5892" that they came to|strong="H4672".
