Esdras 9

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

Now when these things were done|strong="H3615", the princes|strong="H8269" came|strong="H5066" to me, saying|strong="H0559", The people|strong="H5971" of Israel|strong="H3478", and the priests|strong="H3548", and the Levites|strong="H3881", have not separated|strong="H0914" themselves from the people|strong="H5971" of the lands|strong="H0776", doing according to their abominations|strong="H8441", even of the Canaanites|strong="H3669", the Hittites|strong="H2850", the Perizzites|strong="H6522", the Jebusites|strong="H2983", the Ammonites|strong="H5984", the Moabites|strong="H4125", the Egyptians|strong="H4713", and the Amorites|strong="H0567".

For they have taken|strong="H5375" of their daughters|strong="H1323" for themselves, and for their sons|strong="H1121": so that the holy|strong="H6944" seed|strong="H2233" have mingled|strong="H6148" themselves with the people|strong="H5971" of those lands|strong="H0776": yea, the hand|strong="H3027" of the princes|strong="H8269" and rulers|strong="H5461" hath been chief|strong="H7223" in this trespass|strong="H4604".

And when I heard|strong="H8085" this thing|strong="H1697", I rent|strong="H7167" my garment|strong="H0899" and my mantle|strong="H4598", and plucked off|strong="H4803" the hair|strong="H8181" of my head|strong="H7218" and of my beard|strong="H2206", and sat down|strong="H3427" astonied|strong="H8074".

Then were assembled|strong="H0622" unto me every one that trembled|strong="H2730" at the words|strong="H1697" of the God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", because of the transgression|strong="H4604" of those that had been carried away|strong="H1473"; and I sat|strong="H3427" astonied|strong="H8074" until the evening|strong="H6153" sacrifice|strong="H4503".

And at the evening|strong="H6153" sacrifice|strong="H4503" I arose up|strong="H6965" from my heaviness|strong="H8589"; and having rent|strong="H7167" my garment|strong="H0899" and my mantle|strong="H4598", I fell|strong="H3766" upon my knees|strong="H1290", and spread out|strong="H6566" my hands|strong="H3709" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* my God|strong="H0430",

And said|strong="H0559", O my God|strong="H0430", I am ashamed|strong="H0954" and blush|strong="H3637" to lift up|strong="H7311" my face|strong="H6440" to thee, my God|strong="H0430": for our iniquities|strong="H5771" are increased|strong="H7235" over|strong="H4605" our head|strong="H7218", and our trespass|strong="H0819" is grown up|strong="H1431" unto the heavens|strong="H8064".

Since the days|strong="H3117" of our fathers|strong="H0001" have we been in a great|strong="H1419" trespass|strong="H0819" unto this day|strong="H3117"; and for our iniquities|strong="H5771" have we, our kings|strong="H4428", and our priests|strong="H3548", been delivered|strong="H5414" into the hand|strong="H3027" of the kings|strong="H4428" of the lands|strong="H0776", to the sword|strong="H2719", to captivity|strong="H7628", and to a spoil|strong="H0961", and to confusion|strong="H1322" of face|strong="H6440", as it is this day|strong="H3117".

And now for a little|strong="H4592" space|strong="H7281" grace|strong="H8467" hath been shewed from the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* our God|strong="H0430", to leave|strong="H7604" us a remnant to escape|strong="H6413", and to give|strong="H5414" us a nail|strong="H3489" in his holy|strong="H6944" place|strong="H4725", that our God|strong="H0430" may lighten|strong="H0215" our eyes|strong="H5869", and give|strong="H5414" us a little|strong="H4592" reviving|strong="H4241" in our bondage|strong="H5659".

For we were bondmen|strong="H5650"; yet our God|strong="H0430" hath not forsaken|strong="H5800" us in our bondage|strong="H5659", but hath extended|strong="H5186" mercy|strong="H2617" unto us in the sight|strong="H6440" of the kings|strong="H4428" of Persia|strong="H6539", to give|strong="H5414" us a reviving|strong="H4241", to set up|strong="H7311" the house|strong="H1004" of our God|strong="H0430", and to repair|strong="H5975" the desolations|strong="H2723" thereof, and to give|strong="H5414" us a wall|strong="H1447" in Judah|strong="H3063" and in Jerusalem|strong="H3389".

And now, O our God|strong="H0430", what shall we say|strong="H0559" after|strong="H0310" this? for we have forsaken|strong="H5800" thy commandments|strong="H4687",

Which thou hast commanded|strong="H6680" by|strong="H3027" thy servants|strong="H5650" the prophets|strong="H5030", saying|strong="H0559", The land|strong="H0776", unto which ye go|strong="H0935" to possess|strong="H3423" it, is an unclean|strong="H5079" land|strong="H0776" with the filthiness|strong="H5079" of the people|strong="H5971" of the lands|strong="H0776", with their abominations|strong="H8441", which have filled|strong="H4390" it from one end|strong="H6310" to another|strong="H6310" with their uncleanness|strong="H2932".

Now therefore give|strong="H5414" not your daughters|strong="H1323" unto their sons|strong="H1121", neither take|strong="H5375" their daughters|strong="H1323" unto your sons|strong="H1121", nor seek|strong="H1875" their peace|strong="H7965" or their wealth|strong="H2896" for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769": that ye may be strong|strong="H2388", and eat|strong="H0398" the good|strong="H2898" of the land|strong="H0776", and leave it for an inheritance|strong="H3423" to your children|strong="H1121" for ever|strong="H5769".

And after|strong="H0310" all that is come|strong="H0935" upon us for our evil|strong="H7451" deeds|strong="H4639", and for our great|strong="H1419" trespass|strong="H0819", seeing that thou our God|strong="H0430" hast punished|strong="H2820" us less|strong="H4295" than our iniquities|strong="H5771" deserve, and hast given|strong="H5414" us such deliverance|strong="H6413" as this;

Should we again|strong="H7725" break|strong="H6565" thy commandments|strong="H4687", and join in affinity|strong="H2859" with the people|strong="H5971" of these abominations|strong="H8441"? wouldest not thou be angry|strong="H0599" with us till thou hadst consumed|strong="H3615" us, so that there should be no remnant|strong="H7611" nor escaping|strong="H6413"?

O \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", thou art righteous|strong="H6662": for we remain|strong="H7604" yet escaped|strong="H6413", as it is this day|strong="H3117": behold, we are before|strong="H6440" thee in our trespasses|strong="H0819": for we cannot stand|strong="H5975" before|strong="H6440" thee because of this.
