2 Samuel 11

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

1 And it came to pass, after the year|strong="H8141" was expired|strong="H8666", at the time|strong="H6256" when kings|strong="H4428" go forth|strong="H3318" to battle, that David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" Joab|strong="H3097", and his servants|strong="H5650" with him, and all Israel|strong="H3478"; and they destroyed|strong="H7843" the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983", and besieged|strong="H6696" Rabbah|strong="H7237". But David|strong="H1732" tarried still|strong="H3427" at Jerusalem|strong="H3389".

2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide|strong="H6153", that David|strong="H1732" arose|strong="H6965" from off his bed|strong="H4904", and walked|strong="H1980" upon the roof|strong="H1406" of the king’s|strong="H4428" house|strong="H1004": and from the roof|strong="H1406" he saw|strong="H7200" a woman|strong="H0802" washing|strong="H7364" herself; and the woman|strong="H0802" was very|strong="H3966" beautiful|strong="H2896" to look upon|strong="H4758".

3 And David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" and enquired|strong="H1875" after the woman|strong="H0802". And one said|strong="H0559", Is not this Bath-sheba|strong="H1339", the daughter|strong="H1323" of Eliam|strong="H0463", the wife|strong="H0802" of Uriah|strong="H0223" the Hittite|strong="H2850"?

4 And David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" messengers|strong="H4397", and took|strong="H3947" her; and she came in|strong="H0935" unto him, and he lay|strong="H7901" with her; for she was purified|strong="H6942" from her uncleanness|strong="H2932": and she returned|strong="H7725" unto her house|strong="H1004".

5 And the woman|strong="H0802" conceived|strong="H2029", and sent|strong="H7971" and told|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732", and said|strong="H0559", I am with child|strong="H2030".

6 And David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" to Joab|strong="H3097", saying, Send|strong="H7971" me Uriah|strong="H0223" the Hittite|strong="H2850". And Joab|strong="H3097" sent|strong="H7971" Uriah|strong="H0223" to David|strong="H1732".

7 And when Uriah|strong="H0223" was come|strong="H0935" unto him, David|strong="H1732" demanded|strong="H7592" of him how Joab|strong="H3097" did|strong="H7965", and how the people|strong="H5971" did|strong="H7965", and how the war|strong="H4421" prospered|strong="H7965".

8 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" to Uriah|strong="H0223", Go down|strong="H3381" to thy house|strong="H1004", and wash|strong="H7364" thy feet|strong="H7272". And Uriah|strong="H0223" departed out|strong="H3318" of the king’s|strong="H4428" house|strong="H1004", and there followed|strong="H0310" him a mess|strong="H4864" of meat from the king|strong="H4428".

9 But Uriah|strong="H0223" slept|strong="H7901" at the door|strong="H6607" of the king’s|strong="H4428" house|strong="H1004" with all the servants|strong="H5650" of his lord|strong="H0113", and went not down|strong="H3381" to his house|strong="H1004".

10 And when they had told|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732", saying|strong="H0559", Uriah|strong="H0223" went not down|strong="H3381" unto his house|strong="H1004", David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto Uriah|strong="H0223", Camest|strong="H0935" thou not from thy journey|strong="H1870"? why then didst thou not go down|strong="H3381" unto thine house|strong="H1004"?

11 And Uriah|strong="H0223" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", The ark|strong="H0727", and Israel|strong="H3478", and Judah|strong="H3063", abide|strong="H3427" in tents|strong="H5521"; and my lord|strong="H0113" Joab|strong="H3097", and the servants|strong="H5650" of my lord|strong="H0113", are encamped|strong="H2583" in the open|strong="H6440" fields|strong="H7704"; shall I|strong="H0589" then go|strong="H0935" into mine house|strong="H1004", to eat|strong="H0398" and to drink|strong="H8354", and to lie|strong="H7901" with my wife|strong="H0802"? as thou livest|strong="H2416", and as thy soul|strong="H5315" liveth|strong="H2416", I will not do|strong="H6213" this thing|strong="H1697".

12 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" to Uriah|strong="H0223", Tarry|strong="H3427" here to day|strong="H3117" also, and to morrow|strong="H4279" I will let thee depart|strong="H7971". So Uriah|strong="H0223" abode|strong="H3427" in Jerusalem|strong="H3389" that day|strong="H3117", and the morrow|strong="H4283".

13 And when David|strong="H1732" had called|strong="H7121" him, he did eat|strong="H0398" and drink|strong="H8354" before|strong="H6440" him; and he made him drunk|strong="H7937": and at even|strong="H6153" he went out|strong="H3318" to lie|strong="H7901" on his bed|strong="H4904" with the servants|strong="H5650" of his lord|strong="H0113", but went not down|strong="H3381" to his house|strong="H1004".

14 And it came to pass in the morning|strong="H1242", that David|strong="H1732" wrote|strong="H3789" a letter|strong="H5612" to Joab|strong="H3097", and sent|strong="H7971" it by the hand|strong="H3027" of Uriah|strong="H0223".

15 And he wrote|strong="H3789" in the letter|strong="H5612", saying|strong="H0559", Set|strong="H3051" ye Uriah|strong="H0223" in the forefront|strong="H6440" of the hottest|strong="H2389" battle|strong="H4421", and retire|strong="H7725" ye from him|strong="H0310", that he may be smitten|strong="H5221", and die|strong="H4191".

16 And it came to pass, when Joab|strong="H3097" observed|strong="H8104" the city|strong="H5892", that he assigned|strong="H5414" Uriah|strong="H0223" unto a place|strong="H4725" where he knew|strong="H3045" that valiant|strong="H2428" men|strong="H0582" were.

17 And the men|strong="H0582" of the city|strong="H5892" went out|strong="H3318", and fought|strong="H3898" with Joab|strong="H3097": and there fell|strong="H5307" some of the people|strong="H5971" of the servants|strong="H5650" of David|strong="H1732"; and Uriah|strong="H0223" the Hittite|strong="H2850" died|strong="H4191" also.

18 Then Joab|strong="H3097" sent|strong="H7971" and told|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732" all the things|strong="H1697" concerning the war|strong="H4421";

19 And charged|strong="H6680" the messenger|strong="H4397", saying|strong="H0559", When thou hast made an end|strong="H3615" of telling|strong="H1696" the matters|strong="H1697" of the war|strong="H4421" unto the king|strong="H4428",

20 And if so be that the king’s|strong="H4428" wrath|strong="H2534" arise|strong="H5927", and he say|strong="H0559" unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh|strong="H5066" unto the city|strong="H5892" when ye did fight|strong="H3898"? knew|strong="H3045" ye not that they would shoot|strong="H3384" from the wall|strong="H2346"?

21 Who smote|strong="H5221" Abimelech|strong="H0040" the son|strong="H1121" of Jerubbesheth|strong="H3380"? did not a woman|strong="H0802" cast|strong="H7993" a piece|strong="H6400" of a millstone|strong="H7393" upon him from the wall|strong="H2346", that he died|strong="H4191" in Thebez|strong="H8405"? why went ye nigh|strong="H5066" the wall|strong="H2346"? then say|strong="H0559" thou, Thy servant|strong="H5650" Uriah|strong="H0223" the Hittite|strong="H2850" is dead|strong="H4191" also.

22 So the messenger|strong="H4397" went|strong="H3212", and came|strong="H0935" and shewed|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732" all that Joab|strong="H3097" had sent|strong="H7971" him for.

23 And the messenger|strong="H4397" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", Surely the men|strong="H0582" prevailed|strong="H1396" against us, and came out|strong="H3318" unto us into the field|strong="H7704", and we were upon them even unto the entering|strong="H6607" of the gate|strong="H8179".

24 And the shooters|strong="H3384" shot|strong="H3384" from off the wall|strong="H2346" upon thy servants|strong="H5650"; and some of the king’s|strong="H4428" servants|strong="H5650" be dead|strong="H4191", and thy servant|strong="H5650" Uriah|strong="H0223" the Hittite|strong="H2850" is dead|strong="H4191" also.

25 Then David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto the messenger|strong="H4397", Thus shalt thou say|strong="H0559" unto Joab|strong="H3097", Let not this thing|strong="H1697" displease|strong="H3415" thee, for the sword|strong="H2719" devoureth|strong="H0398" one as well as another|strong="H2090": make thy battle|strong="H4421" more strong|strong="H2388" against the city|strong="H5892", and overthrow|strong="H2040" it: and encourage|strong="H2388" thou him.

26 And when the wife|strong="H0802" of Uriah|strong="H0223" heard|strong="H8085" that Uriah|strong="H0223" her husband|strong="H0376" was dead|strong="H4191", she mourned|strong="H5594" for her husband|strong="H1167".

27 And when the mourning|strong="H0060" was past|strong="H5674", David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" and fetched|strong="H0622" her to his house|strong="H1004", and she became his wife|strong="H0802", and bare|strong="H3205" him a son|strong="H1121". But the thing|strong="H1697" that David|strong="H1732" had done|strong="H6213" displeased|strong="H3415" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
