After|strong="H0310" these things|strong="H1697", and the establishment|strong="H0571" thereof, Sennacherib|strong="H5576" king|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804" came|strong="H0935", and entered|strong="H0935" into Judah|strong="H3063", and encamped|strong="H2583" against the fenced|strong="H1219" cities|strong="H5892", and thought|strong="H0559" to win|strong="H1234" them for himself.
And when Hezekiah|strong="H3169" saw|strong="H7200" that Sennacherib|strong="H5576" was come|strong="H0935", and that he was purposed|strong="H6440" to fight|strong="H4421" against Jerusalem|strong="H3389",
He took counsel|strong="H3289" with his princes|strong="H8269" and his mighty men|strong="H1368" to stop|strong="H5640" the waters|strong="H4325" of the fountains|strong="H5869" which were without|strong="H2351" the city|strong="H5892": and they did help|strong="H5826" him.
So there was gathered|strong="H6908" much|strong="H7227" people|strong="H5971" together|strong="H6908", who stopped|strong="H5640" all the fountains|strong="H4599", and the brook|strong="H5158" that ran|strong="H7857" through the midst|strong="H8432" of the land|strong="H0776", saying|strong="H0559", Why should the kings|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804" come|strong="H0935", and find|strong="H4672" much|strong="H7227" water|strong="H4325"?
Also he strengthened|strong="H2388" himself, and built up|strong="H1129" all the wall|strong="H2346" that was broken|strong="H6555", and raised it up|strong="H5927" to the towers|strong="H4026", and another|strong="H0312" wall|strong="H2346" without|strong="H2351", and repaired|strong="H2388" Millo|strong="H4407" in the city|strong="H5892" of David|strong="H1732", and made|strong="H6213" darts|strong="H7973" and shields|strong="H4043" in abundance|strong="H7230".
And he set|strong="H5414" captains|strong="H8269" of war|strong="H4421" over the people|strong="H5971", and gathered them together|strong="H6908" to him in the street|strong="H7339" of the gate|strong="H8179" of the city|strong="H5892", and spake|strong="H1696" comfortably|strong="H3824" to them, saying|strong="H0559",
Be strong|strong="H2388" and courageous|strong="H0553", be not afraid|strong="H3372" nor dismayed|strong="H2865" for|strong="H6440" the king|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804", nor for all the multitude|strong="H1995" that is with him: for there be more|strong="H7227" with us than with him:
With him is an arm|strong="H2220" of flesh|strong="H1320"; but with us is the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* our God|strong="H0430" to help|strong="H5826" us, and to fight|strong="H3898" our battles|strong="H4421". And the people|strong="H5971" rested|strong="H5564" themselves upon the words|strong="H1697" of Hezekiah|strong="H3169" king|strong="H4428" of Judah|strong="H3063".
After|strong="H0310" this did Sennacherib|strong="H5576" king|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804" send|strong="H7971" his servants|strong="H5650" to Jerusalem|strong="H3389", (but he himself laid siege against Lachish|strong="H3923", and all his power|strong="H4475" with him,) unto Hezekiah|strong="H3169" king|strong="H4428" of Judah|strong="H3063", and unto all Judah|strong="H3063" that were at Jerusalem|strong="H3389", saying|strong="H0559",
Thus saith|strong="H0559" Sennacherib|strong="H5576" king|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804", Whereon do ye trust|strong="H0982", that ye abide|strong="H3427" in the siege|strong="H4692" in Jerusalem|strong="H3389"?
Doth not Hezekiah|strong="H3169" persuade|strong="H5496" you to give|strong="H5414" over yourselves to die|strong="H4191" by famine|strong="H7458" and by thirst|strong="H6772", saying|strong="H0559", The \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* our God|strong="H0430" shall deliver|strong="H5337" us out of the hand|strong="H3709" of the king|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804"?
Hath not the same Hezekiah|strong="H3169" taken away|strong="H5493" his high places|strong="H1116" and his altars|strong="H4196", and commanded|strong="H0559" Judah|strong="H3063" and Jerusalem|strong="H3389", saying|strong="H0559", Ye shall worship|strong="H7812" before|strong="H6440" one|strong="H0259" altar|strong="H4196", and burn incense|strong="H6999" upon it?
Know|strong="H3045" ye not what I and my fathers|strong="H0001" have done|strong="H6213" unto all the people|strong="H5971" of other lands|strong="H0776"? were the gods|strong="H0430" of the nations|strong="H1471" of those lands|strong="H0776" any ways|strong="H3201" able|strong="H3201" to deliver|strong="H5337" their lands|strong="H0776" out of mine hand|strong="H3027"?
Who was there among all the gods|strong="H0430" of those nations|strong="H1471" that my fathers|strong="H0001" utterly destroyed|strong="H2763", that could|strong="H3201" deliver|strong="H5337" his people|strong="H5971" out of mine hand|strong="H3027", that your God|strong="H0430" should be able|strong="H3201" to deliver|strong="H5337" you out of mine hand|strong="H3027"?
Now therefore let not|strong="H3808" Hezekiah|strong="H2396" deceive|strong="H5377" you, nor persuade|strong="H5496" you on this manner, neither yet believe|strong="H0539" him: for no god|strong="H0433" of any nation|strong="H1471" or kingdom|strong="H4467" was able|strong="H3201" to deliver|strong="H5337" his people|strong="H5971" out of mine hand|strong="H3027", and out of the hand|strong="H3027" of my fathers|strong="H0001": how much less shall your God|strong="H0430" deliver|strong="H5337" you out of mine hand|strong="H3027"?
And his servants|strong="H5650" spake|strong="H1696" yet more against the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430", and against his servant|strong="H5650" Hezekiah|strong="H3169".
He wrote|strong="H3789" also letters|strong="H5612" to rail|strong="H2778" on the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", and to speak|strong="H0559" against him, saying|strong="H0559", As the gods|strong="H0430" of the nations|strong="H1471" of other lands|strong="H0776" have not delivered|strong="H5337" their people|strong="H5971" out of mine hand|strong="H3027", so shall not the God|strong="H0430" of Hezekiah|strong="H3169" deliver|strong="H5337" his people|strong="H5971" out of mine hand|strong="H3027".
Then they cried|strong="H7121" with a loud|strong="H1419" voice|strong="H6963" in the Jews’ speech|strong="H3066" unto the people|strong="H5971" of Jerusalem|strong="H3389" that were on the wall|strong="H2346", to affright|strong="H3372" them, and to trouble|strong="H0926" them; that they might take|strong="H3920" the city|strong="H5892".
And they spake|strong="H1696" against|strong="H5921" the God|strong="H0430" of Jerusalem|strong="H3389", as against the gods|strong="H0430" of the people|strong="H5971" of the earth|strong="H0776", which were the work|strong="H4639" of the hands|strong="H3027" of man|strong="H0120".
And for this cause Hezekiah|strong="H3169" the king|strong="H4428", and the prophet|strong="H5030" Isaiah|strong="H3470" the son|strong="H1121" of Amoz|strong="H0531", prayed|strong="H6419" and cried|strong="H2199" to heaven|strong="H8064".
And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* sent|strong="H7971" an angel|strong="H4397", which cut off|strong="H3582" all the mighty men|strong="H1368" of valour|strong="H2428", and the leaders|strong="H5057" and captains|strong="H8269" in the camp|strong="H4264" of the king|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804". So he returned|strong="H7725" with shame|strong="H1322" of face|strong="H6440" to his own land|strong="H0776". And when he was come|strong="H0935" into the house|strong="H1004" of his god|strong="H0430", they that came forth|strong="H3329" of his own bowels|strong="H4578" slew|strong="H5307" him there with the sword|strong="H2719".
Thus the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* saved|strong="H3467" Hezekiah|strong="H3169" and the inhabitants|strong="H3427" of Jerusalem|strong="H3389" from the hand|strong="H3027" of Sennacherib|strong="H5576" the king|strong="H4428" of Assyria|strong="H0804", and from the hand|strong="H3027" of all other, and guided|strong="H5095" them on every side|strong="H5439".
And many|strong="H7227" brought|strong="H0935" gifts|strong="H4503" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* to Jerusalem|strong="H3389", and presents|strong="H4030" to Hezekiah|strong="H3169" king|strong="H4428" of Judah|strong="H3063": so that he was magnified|strong="H5375" in the sight|strong="H5869" of all nations|strong="H1471" from thenceforth|strong="H0310".
In those days|strong="H3117" Hezekiah|strong="H3169" was sick|strong="H2470" to the death|strong="H4191", and prayed|strong="H6419" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: and he spake|strong="H0559" unto him, and he gave|strong="H5414" him a sign|strong="H4159".
But Hezekiah|strong="H3169" rendered not again|strong="H7725" according to the benefit|strong="H1576" done unto him; for his heart|strong="H3820" was lifted up|strong="H1361": therefore there was wrath|strong="H7110" upon him, and upon Judah|strong="H3063" and Jerusalem|strong="H3389".
Notwithstanding Hezekiah|strong="H3169" humbled|strong="H3665" himself for the pride|strong="H1363" of his heart|strong="H3820", both he and the inhabitants|strong="H3427" of Jerusalem|strong="H3389", so that the wrath|strong="H7110" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* came|strong="H0935" not upon them in the days|strong="H3117" of Hezekiah|strong="H3169".
And Hezekiah|strong="H3169" had exceeding|strong="H3966" much|strong="H7235" riches|strong="H6239" and honour|strong="H3519": and he made|strong="H6213" himself treasuries|strong="H0214" for silver|strong="H3701", and for gold|strong="H2091", and for precious|strong="H3368" stones|strong="H0068", and for spices|strong="H1314", and for shields|strong="H4043", and for all manner of pleasant|strong="H2532" jewels|strong="H3627";
Storehouses|strong="H4543" also for the increase|strong="H8393" of corn|strong="H1715", and wine|strong="H8492", and oil|strong="H3323"; and stalls|strong="H0723" for all manner of beasts|strong="H0929", and cotes|strong="H0220" for flocks|strong="H5739".
Moreover he provided|strong="H6213" him cities|strong="H5892", and possessions|strong="H4735" of flocks|strong="H6629" and herds|strong="H1241" in abundance|strong="H7230": for God|strong="H0430" had given|strong="H5414" him substance|strong="H7399" very|strong="H3966" much|strong="H7227".
This same Hezekiah|strong="H3169" also stopped|strong="H5640" the upper|strong="H5945" watercourse|strong="H4161" of Gihon|strong="H1521", and brought it straight|strong="H3474" down|strong="H4295" to the west side|strong="H4628" of the city|strong="H5892" of David|strong="H1732". And Hezekiah|strong="H3169" prospered|strong="H6743" in all his works|strong="H4639".
Howbeit|strong="H3651" in the business of the ambassadors|strong="H3887" of the princes|strong="H8269" of Babylon|strong="H0894", who sent|strong="H7971" unto him to enquire|strong="H1875" of the wonder|strong="H4159" that was done in the land|strong="H0776", God|strong="H0430" left|strong="H5800" him, to try|strong="H5254" him, that he might know|strong="H3045" all that was in his heart|strong="H3824".
Now the rest|strong="H3499" of the acts|strong="H1697" of Hezekiah|strong="H3169", and his goodness|strong="H2617", behold, they are written|strong="H3789" in the vision|strong="H2377" of Isaiah|strong="H3470" the prophet|strong="H5030", the son|strong="H1121" of Amoz|strong="H0531", and in the book|strong="H5612" of the kings|strong="H4428" of Judah|strong="H3063" and Israel|strong="H3478".
And Hezekiah|strong="H3169" slept|strong="H7901" with his fathers|strong="H0001", and they buried|strong="H6912" him in the chiefest|strong="H4608" of the sepulchres|strong="H6913" of the sons|strong="H1121" of David|strong="H1732": and all Judah|strong="H3063" and the inhabitants|strong="H3427" of Jerusalem|strong="H3389" did him|strong="H6213" honour|strong="H3519" at his death|strong="H4194". And Manasseh|strong="H4519" his son|strong="H1121" reigned|strong="H4427" in his stead.
