1 After some years had passed, John the Baptizer came and told Gods word in the desert of Judea.
1 Naqueles dias, João Batista apareceu no deserto da Judeia e começou a anunciar a seguinte mensagem:
2 He said, Stop doing wrong things and turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven is almost here.
2 “Arrependam-se, pois o reino dos céus está próximo”.
3 This is the man that Isaiah the prophet of God spoke about long ago. He said, A man is calling in the wilderness, "Make the way ready for the Lord. Make the road straight for him."
3 O profeta Isaías se referia a João quando disse: “Ele é uma voz que clama no deserto: ‘Preparem o caminho para a vinda do Senhor! Abram a estrada para ele!’”.
4 John wore clothes made of camels hair and a leather belt. He ate locusts and wild honey.
4 As roupas de João eram tecidas com pelos de camelo, e ele usava um cinto de couro e alimentava-se de gafanhotos e mel silvestre.
5 People went to him from Jerusalem, from all of Judea, and from all the country near the Jordan River.
5 Gente de Jerusalém, de toda a Judeia e de todo o vale do Jordão ia até ele.
6 He baptised them in the Jordan River when they said how sorry they were for the wrong things they had done.
6 Quando confessavam seus pecados, ele os batizava no rio Jordão.
7 Many of the Pharisee group and the Sadducee group came to him to be baptised. But when he saw them, he said to them, You family of snakes! Who told you to run away from Gods anger that is coming?
7 Mas, quando João viu que muitos fariseus e saduceus vinham ao lugar de batismo, ele os repreendeu abertamente. “Raça de víboras!”, exclamou. “Quem os convenceu a fugir da ira que está por vir?
8 Stop your wrong ways to show that you have turned back to God.
8 Provem por suas ações que vocês se arrependeram.
9 Do not think you can say to your-selves, "Abraham is our father." I tell you, God can make children for Abraham from these stones.
9 Não pensem que podem dizer uns aos outros: ‘Estamos a salvo, pois somos filhos de Abraão’. Isso não significa nada, pois eu lhes digo que até destas pedras Deus pode fazer surgir filhos de Abraão.
10 The axe is ready to cut down the trees. Every tree that does not have good fruit is cut down and thrown into a fire.
10 Agora mesmo o machado do julgamento está pronto para cortar as raízes das árvores. Toda árvore que não produz bons frutos será cortada e lançada ao fogo.
11 I baptise you with water when you stop your wrong ways. But another person is coming after me. He is greater than I am. I am not good enough to take off his shoes. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
11 “Eu batizo com água aqueles que se arrependem. Depois de mim, porém, virá alguém mais poderoso que eu, alguém muito superior, cujas sandálias não sou digno de carregar. Ele os batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo.
12 He has a cleaning fan in his hand and will fan his grain very clean. He will put the grain into his storehouse. But he will burn the chaff in the fire that never dies.
12 Ele já tem na mão a pá, e com ela separará a palha do trigo e limpará a área onde os cereais são debulhados. Juntará o trigo no celeiro, mas queimará a palha no fogo que nunca se apaga.”
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River. He came to John to be baptised by him.
13 Jesus foi da Galileia ao rio Jordão para que João o batizasse.
14 John tried to stop him. He said, I need to be baptised by you. Why do you come to me to be baptised?
14 João, porém, tentou impedi-lo. “Eu é que preciso ser batizado pelo senhor”, disse ele. “Então por que vem a mim?”
15 But Jesus answered, Please do it now. In this way we shall do all that is right. Then John let him be baptised.
15 Jesus respondeu: “É necessário que seja assim, pois devemos fazer tudo que Deus requer”. E João concordou em batizá-lo.
16 After Jesus was baptised, he came up out of the water right away. The sky opened. He saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove.
16 Depois do batismo, enquanto Jesus saía da água, o céu se abriu, e ele viu o Espírito de Deus descer como uma pomba e pousar sobre ele.
17 A voice from the sky said, This is my dear Son. I am very pleased with him.
17 E uma voz do céu disse: “Este é meu Filho amado, que me dá grande alegria”.
