Eclesiastes 7

1 A [good] name is better than precious oil; and the day of death, than the day of one's birth.
1 A boa fama é melhor do que um bom perfume, e o dia da morte é melhor do que o dia do nascimento.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all man; and the living will lay it to his heart.
2 Melhor é ir à casa onde há luto do que ir à casa onde há banquete, pois naquela se vê o fim de todas as pessoas; e que os vivos o tomem em consideração.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made glad.
3 Melhor é a mágoa do que o riso, porque com a tristeza do rosto se melhora o coração.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o dos insensatos, na casa da alegria.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
5 Melhor é ouvir a repreensão do sábio do que ouvir a canção dos tolos.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
6 Pois, como o crepitar dos espinhos debaixo de uma panela, assim é a risada dos tolos. Também isto é vaidade.
7 Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding.
7 Certamente a opressão faz do sábio um tolo, e o suborno corrompe o coração.
8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning; [and] the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
8 Melhor é o fim das coisas do que o seu princípio; a paciência é melhor do que a arrogância.
9 Don't be in a hurry in your spirit to be angry; for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
9 Não se apresse em ficar irado, porque a ira se abriga no íntimo dos tolos.
10 Don't say, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.
10 Nunca pergunte: “Por que os dias passados foram melhores que os de agora?” Pois não é sábio fazer essa pergunta.
11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance; yes, more excellent is it for those who see the sun.
11 Boa é a sabedoria, havendo herança; ela é proveitosa para os que veem o sol.
12 For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
12 A sabedoria protege, do mesmo modo que o dinheiro; mas a vantagem da sabedoria é que ela dá vida a quem a possui.
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he has made crooked?
13 Observe as obras de Deus, pois quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez torto?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything [that will be] after him.
14 No dia da prosperidade, seja feliz; mas, no dia da adversidade, considere que Deus fez tanto este como aquele, para que o ser humano não descubra nada do que há de vir depois dele.
15 All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs [his life] in his evildoing.
15 Tudo isto vi nos dias da minha vaidade: há justos que perecem na sua justiça, e há ímpios que prolongam os seus dias na sua maldade.
16 Don't be overly righteous; neither make yourself overly wise: why should you destroy yourself?
16 Não seja demasiadamente justo, nem exageradamente sábio; por que você destruiria a si mesmo?
17 Don't be overly wicked, neither be foolish: why should you die before your time?
17 Não seja demasiadamente perverso, nem seja tolo; por que você morreria antes da sua hora?
18 It is good that you should take hold of this; yes, also from that do not withdraw your hand: for he who fears God will come forth from them all.
18 Bom é que você retenha isto e também não abra mão daquilo; pois quem teme a Deus sai ileso de tudo isto.
19 Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.
19 A sabedoria fortalece o sábio, mais do que dez poderosos que se encontram numa cidade.
20 Surely there is not [a] righteous man on earth, that does good, and does not sin.
20 Não há nenhum justo sobre a terra que faça o bem e que não peque.
21 Also don't take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your slave curse you;
21 Não dê atenção a todas as palavras que se dizem, para que você não venha a ouvir o seu servo amaldiçoando você.
22 for oftentimes also your own heart knows that you yourself likewise have cursed others.
22 E você sabe que muitas vezes você mesmo já amaldiçoou os outros.
23 All this I have proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
23 Tudo isto examinei por meio da sabedoria. Eu disse: “Serei sábio.” Mas a sabedoria estava longe de mim.
24 That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep; who can find it out?
24 O que está longe e é muito profundo, quem o poderá encontrar?
25 I turned about, and my heart [was set] to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason [of things], and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness.
25 Procurei conhecer, investigar, buscar a sabedoria e a razão, e compreender que a maldade é estupidez e a tolice é loucura.
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, [and] whose hands are bindings: whoever pleases God will escape from her; but the sinner will be taken by her.
26 Achei coisa mais amarga do que a morte: a mulher cujo coração é rede e armadilha e cujas mãos são correntes. Quem agrada a Deus fugirá dela, mas o pecador virá a ser seu prisioneiro.
27 Look, this I have found, says the Preacher, [laying] one thing to another, to find out the account;
27 Eis o que descobri, diz o Pregador, conferindo uma coisa com outra, para a respeito delas formar o meu juízo,
28 which my soul still seeks, but I have not found: of man one among a thousand I have found; but a woman among all those I have not found.
28 juízo que ainda procuro e não encontrei: entre mil homens achei um como esperava, mas entre tantas mulheres não achei nem sequer uma.
29 Look, this only I have found: that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
29 O que descobri é tão somente isto: que Deus fez o ser humano reto, mas ele se meteu em muitos problemas.
