1 At daybreak all the chief priests and the councillors of the nation consulted together against Jesus, to bring about his death.
1 Assim que amanheceu, todos os chefes dos sacerdotes e os líderes judeus fizeram os seus planos para conseguir que Jesus fosse morto.
2 They put him in chains and led him away, and gave him up to the Roman Governor, Pilate.
2 Eles o amarraram, levaram e entregaram ao governador Pilatos.
3 Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that Jesus was condemned, repented of what he had done, and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and councillors.
3 Quando Judas, o traidor, viu que Jesus havia sido condenado, sentiu remorso e foi devolver as trinta moedas de prata aos chefes dos sacerdotes e aos líderes judeus,
4 “I did wrong in betraying a good man to his death,” he said. “What has that to do with us?” they replied. “You must see to that yourself.”
4 dizendo: — Eu pequei, entregando à morte um homem inocente. Eles responderam: — O que é que nós temos com isso? O problema é seu.
5 Judas flung down the pieces of silver in the Temple, and left; and went away and hanged himself.
5 Então Judas jogou o dinheiro para dentro do Templo e saiu. Depois foi e se enforcou.
6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver, but they said: “We must not put them into the Temple treasury, because they are blood-money.”
6 Os chefes dos sacerdotes pegaram o dinheiro e disseram: — Isto é dinheiro sujo de sangue, e é contra a nossa
7 So, after consultation, they bought with them the ‘Potter’s Field’ for a burial-ground for foreigners;
7 Depois de conversarem sobre o assunto, resolveram usar o dinheiro para comprar o “Campo do Oleiro”, a fim de que servisse como cemitério para os não judeus.
8 and that is why that field is called the ‘Field of Blood’ to this very day.
8 Por isso aquele campo é chamado até hoje de “Campo de Sangue”.
9 Then it was that these words spoken by the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled — ‘They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him who was valued, whom some of the people of Israel valued,
9 Assim aconteceu o que o profeta Jeremias tinha dito: “Eles pegaram as trinta moedas de prata, o preço que o povo de Israel tinha concordado em pagar por ele,
10 and gave them for the Potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.’
10 e as usaram para comprar o campo do oleiro, como o Senhor me havia mandado fazer.”
11 Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Roman Governor. “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked the Governor. “It is true,” answered Jesus.
11 Jesus estava em pé diante do Governador, e este o interrogou, dizendo: — Você é o rei dos judeus? Jesus respondeu:
12 While charges were being brought against him by the chief priests and councillors, Jesus made no reply.
12 Mas, quando foi acusado pelos chefes dos sacerdotes e pelos líderes judeus, Jesus não respondeu nada.
13 Then Pilate said to him: “Do not you hear how many accusations they are making against you?”
13 Então Pilatos disse: — Você não está ouvindo as acusações que estão fazendo contra você?
14 Yet Jesus made no reply — not even a single word; at which the Governor was greatly astonished.
14 Porém Jesus não disse nada, e o Governador ficou muito admirado com isso.
15 Now, at the feast, the Governor was accustomed to grant the people the release of any one prisoner whom they might choose.
15 Em toda Festa da Páscoa , Pilatos costumava soltar um dos presos, a pedido do povo.
16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
16 Naquela ocasião estava preso um homem muito conhecido, chamado Jesus Barrabás.
17 So, when the people had collected, Pilate said to them: “Which do you wish me to release for you? Barabbas? Or Jesus who is called ‘Christ’?”
17 Então, quando a multidão se reuniu, Pilatos perguntou: — Quem é que vocês querem que eu solte: Jesus Barrabás ou este Jesus, que é chamado de
18 For he knew that it was out of jealousy that they had given Jesus up to him.
18 Pilatos sabia muito bem que os líderes judeus haviam entregado Jesus porque tinham inveja dele.
19 While he was still on the Bench, his wife sent this message to him — “Do not have anything to do with that good man, for I have been very unhappy today in a dream because of him.”
19 Enquanto Pilatos estava sentado no tribunal, a sua esposa lhe mandou o seguinte recado: — Não tenha nada a ver com esse homem inocente porque esta noite, num sonho, eu sofri muito por causa dele.
20 But the chief priests and the councillors persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to kill Jesus.
20 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os líderes judeus convenceram a multidão a pedir ao governador Pilatos que soltasse Barrabás e condenasse Jesus à morte.
21 The Governor, however, said to them: “Which of these two do you wish me to release for you?” “Barabbas,” they answered.
21 Então o Governador perguntou: — Qual dos dois vocês querem que eu solte? — Barrabás! — responderam eles.
22 “What then,” Pilate asked, “should I do with Jesus who is called ‘Christ?’ “Let him be crucified,” they all replied.
22 Pilatos perguntou: — Que farei então com Jesus, que é chamado de Messias? — Crucifica! — responderam todos.
23 “Why, what harm has he done?” he asked. But they kept shouting furiously: “Let him be crucified!”
23 Ele perguntou: — Que crime ele cometeu? Aí começaram a gritar bem alto: — Crucifica!
24 When Pilate saw that his efforts were unavailing, but that, on the contrary, a riot was beginning, he took some water, and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying as he did so: “I am not answerable for this bloodshed; you must see to it yourselves.”
24 Então Pilatos viu que não conseguia nada e que o povo estava começando a se revoltar. Aí mandou trazer água, lavou as mãos diante da multidão e disse: — Eu não sou responsável pela morte deste homem. Isso é com vocês.
25 And all the people answered: “His blood be on our heads and on our children’s!”
25 E toda a multidão respondeu: — Que o castigo por esta morte caia sobre nós e sobre os nossos filhos!
26 The Pilate released Barabbas to them; but Jesus he scourged, and gave him up to be crucified.
26 Então Pilatos soltou Barrabás, como eles haviam pedido. Depois mandou chicotear Jesus e o entregou para ser crucificado.
27 After that, the Governor’s soldiers took Jesus with them into the Government house, and gathered the whole garrison around him.
27 Depois os soldados de Pilatos levaram Jesus para o Palácio do Governador e reuniram toda a tropa em volta dele.
28 They stripped him, and put on him a red military cloak,
28 Tiraram a roupa de Jesus e o vestiram com uma capa vermelha.
29 and having twisted some thorns into a crown, put it on his head, and a rod in his right hand, and then, going down on their knees before him, they mocked him. “Long life to you, king of the Jews!” they said.
29 Fizeram uma coroa de ramos cheios de espinhos, e a puseram na sua cabeça, e colocaram um bastão na sua mão direita. Aí começaram a se ajoelhar diante dele e a caçoar, dizendo: — Viva o Rei dos Judeus!
30 They spat at him and, taking the rod, kept striking him on the head;
30 Cuspiam nele, pegavam o bastão e batiam na sua cabeça.
31 and, when they had left off mocking him, they took off the military cloak, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to be crucified.
31 Depois de terem caçoado dele, tiraram a capa vermelha e o vestiram com as suas próprias roupas. Em seguida o levaram para o crucificarem.
32 As they were on their way out, they came upon a man from Cyrene of the name of Simon; and they compelled him to go with them to carry the cross.
32 Quando estavam saindo, os soldados encontraram um homem chamado Simão, da cidade de Cirene, e o obrigaram a carregar a cruz de Jesus.
33 On reaching a place named Golgotha (a place named from its likeness to a skull),
33 Eles chegaram a um lugar chamado Gólgota. (Gólgota quer dizer “Lugar da Caveira”.)
34 they gave him some wine to drink which had been mixed with gall; but after tasting it, Jesus refused to drink it.
34 Ali deram vinho misturado com fel para Jesus beber. Mas, depois que o provou, ele não quis beber.
35 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among them by casting lots.
35 Em seguida os soldados o crucificaram e repartiram as suas roupas entre si, tirando a sorte com dados, para ver qual seria a parte de cada um.
36 Then they sat down, and kept watch over him there.
36 Depois disso sentaram ali e ficaram guardando Jesus.
37 Above his head they fixed the accusation against him written out — ‘THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.’
37 Puseram acima da sua cabeça uma tabuleta onde estava escrito como acusação contra ele: “Este é Jesus, o Rei dos Judeus.”
38 At the same time two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right, the other on the left.
38 Com Jesus, crucificaram também dois ladrões: um à sua direita e o outro à sua esquerda.
39 The passers-by railed at him, shaking their heads as they said:
39 Os que passavam por ali caçoavam dele, balançavam a cabeça e o insultavam,
40 “You who ‘destroy the Temple and build one in three days,’ save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross!”
40 dizendo assim: — Ei, você que disse que era capaz de destruir o Templo e tornar a construí-lo em três dias! Se você é mesmo o Filho de Deus, desça da cruz e salve-se a si mesmo!
41 In the same way the chief priests, with the Teaches of the law and councillors, said in mockery:
41 Os chefes dos sacerdotes, os mestres da Lei e os líderes judeus também caçoavam dele, dizendo:
42 “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the ‘king of Israel’! Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
42 — Ele salvou os outros, mas não pode salvar a si mesmo! Ele é o Rei de Israel, não é? Se descer agora mesmo da cruz, nós creremos nele!
43 He has trusted in God; if God wants him, let him deliver him now; for he said ‘I am God’s Son.’”
43 Ele confiou em Deus e disse que era Filho de Deus. Vamos ver se Deus quer salvá-lo agora!
44 Even the robbers, who were crucified with him, insulted him in the same way.
44 E até os ladrões que foram crucificados com Jesus também o insultavam.
45 After midday a darkness came over all the country, lasting until three in the afternoon.
45 Ao meio-dia começou a escurecer, e toda a terra ficou três horas na escuridão.
46 About three Jesus called out loudly: “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabacthani” — that is to say, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’
46 Às três horas da tarde, Jesus gritou bem alto:
47 Some of those standing by heard this, and said: “The man is calling for Elijah!”
47 Algumas pessoas que estavam ali ouviram isso e disseram: — Ele está chamando Elias.
48 One of them immediately ran and took a sponge, and, filling it with common wine, put it on the end of a rod, and offered it to him to drink.
48 Uma dessas pessoas correu e molhou uma esponja em vinho comum, pôs na ponta de um bastão e deu para Jesus beber.
49 But the rest said: “Wait and let us see if Elijah is coming to save him.”
49 Mas outros disseram: — Espere. Vamos ver se Elias vem salvá-lo!
50 But Jesus, uttering another loud cry, gave up his spirit.
50 Aí Jesus deu outro grito forte e morreu.
51 Suddenly the Temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, the rocks were torn asunder,
51 Então a cortina do Templo se rasgou em dois pedaços, de cima até embaixo. A terra tremeu, e as rochas se partiram.
52 the tombs opened, and the bodies of many of God’s people who had fallen asleep rose,
52 Os túmulos se abriram, e muitas pessoas do povo de Deus que haviam morrido foram ressuscitadas
53 and they, leaving their tombs, went, after the resurrection of Jesus, into the Holy City, and appeared to many people.
53 e saíram dos túmulos. E, depois da ressurreição de Jesus, entraram em Jerusalém, a Cidade Santa, onde muitos viram essas pessoas.
54 The Roman captain, and the men with him who were watching Jesus, on seeing the earthquake and all that was happening, became greatly frightened and exclaimed: “This must indeed have been God’s Son!”
54 O oficial do exército romano e os seus soldados, que estavam guardando Jesus, viram o terremoto e tudo o que aconteceu. Então ficaram com muito medo e disseram: — De fato, este homem era o Filho de Deus!
55 There were many women there, watching from a distance, who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee and had been attending on him.
55 Algumas mulheres estavam ali, olhando de longe. Eram as que tinham acompanhado Jesus desde a Galileia e o haviam ajudado.
56 Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
56 Entre elas estavam Maria Madalena; Maria, a mãe de Tiago e de José; e a mãe dos filhos de Zebedeu.
57 When evening had fallen, there came a rich man belonging to Ramah, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.
57 Já era quase noite quando chegou da cidade de Arimateia um homem rico chamado José. Ele também era seguidor de Jesus.
58 He went to see Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate ordered it to be given him.
58 José foi e pediu a Pilatos o corpo de Jesus. E Pilatos mandou que o entregassem a ele.
59 So Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen sheet,
59 Então José pegou o corpo, enrolou num lençol novo de linho
60 and laid it in his newly made tomb which he had cut in the rock; and, before he left, he rolled a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.
60 e o colocou no seu próprio túmulo, que há pouco tempo havia sido cavado na rocha. Depois rolou uma grande pedra para fechar a entrada do túmulo e foi embora.
61 Mary of Magdala and the other Mary remained behind, sitting in front of the grave.
61 Maria Madalena e a outra Maria estavam ali, sentadas em frente do túmulo.
62 The next day — that is, the day following the Preparation-day — the chief priests and Pharisees came in a body to Pilate, and said:
62 No dia seguinte, isto é, o dia depois da sexta-feira, os chefes dos sacerdotes e os fariseus se reuniram com Pilatos
63 “Sir, we remember that, during his lifetime, that impostor said ‘I will rise after three days.’
63 e disseram: — Governador, nós lembramos que, quando ainda estava vivo, aquele mentiroso disse: “Depois de três dias eu serei ressuscitado.”
64 So order the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise his disciples may come and steal him, and then say to the people ‘He has risen from the dead,’ when the latest imposture will be worse than the first.”
64 Portanto, mande vigiar bem o túmulo até o terceiro dia, para os discípulos dele não poderem roubar o corpo e depois dizerem ao povo que ele foi ressuscitado. Pois esta última mentira seria pior do que a primeira.
65 “You may have a guard,” was Pilate’s reply; “go and make the tomb as secure as you can.”
65 Então Pilatos disse: — Levem estes soldados com vocês e guardem o túmulo o melhor que puderem.
66 So they went made the tomb secure, by sealing the stone, in presence of the guard.
66 Eles foram, puseram um selo de segurança na pedra e deixaram os soldados ali, guardando o túmulo.
