1 On leaving that place, Jesus, followed by his disciples, went to his own part of the country.
1 Jesus voltou com os seus discípulos para a cidade de Nazaré, onde ele tinha morado.
2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue; and the people, as they listened, were deeply impressed. “Where did he get this?” they said, “and what is this wisdom that has been given him? And these miracles which he is doing?
2 No sábado começou a ensinar na sinagoga . Muitos que o estavam escutando ficaram admirados e perguntaram: — De onde é que este homem consegue tudo isso? De onde vem a sabedoria dele? Como é que faz esses milagres?
3 Is not he the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters, too, living here among us?” This proved a hindrance to their believing in him;
3 Por acaso ele não é o carpinteiro, filho de Maria? Não é irmão de Tiago, José, Judas e Simão? As suas irmãs não moram aqui? Por isso ficaram desiludidos com ele.
4 on which Jesus said: “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relations, and in his own home.”
4 Mas Jesus disse:
5 And he could not work any miracle there, beyond placing his hands on a few infirm persons, and curing them;
5 Ele não pôde fazer milagres em Nazaré, a não ser curar alguns doentes, pondo as mãos sobre eles.
6 and he wondered at the want of faith shown by the people. Jesus went around the villages, one after another, teaching.
6 E ficou admirado com a falta de fé que havia ali. Jesus ensinava nos povoados que havia perto dali.
7 He called the Twelve to him, and began to send them out as his messengers, two and two, and gave them authority over foul spirits.
7 Ele chamou os doze discípulos e os enviou dois a dois, dando-lhes autoridade para expulsar espíritos maus.
8 He instructed them to take nothing but a staff for the journey — not even bread, or a bag, or coins in their purse;
8 Deu ordem para não levarem nada na viagem, somente uma bengala para se apoiar. Não deviam levar comida, nem sacola, nem dinheiro.
9 but they were to wear sandals, and not to put on a second coat.
9 Deviam calçar sandálias e não levar nem uma túnica a mais.
10 “Whenever you go to stay at a house,”he said, “remain there until you leave that place;
10 Disse ainda:
11 and if a place does not welcome you, or listen to you, as you go out of it shake off the dust that is on the soles of your feet, as a protest against them.”
11 Mas, se em algum lugar as pessoas não quiserem recebê-los, nem ouvi-los, vão embora. E na saída sacudam o pó das suas sandálias, como sinal de protesto contra aquela gente.
12 So they set out, and proclaimed the need of repentance.
12 Então os discípulos foram e anunciaram que todos deviam se arrepender dos seus pecados.
13 They drove out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were infirm, and cured them.
13 Eles expulsavam muitos demônios e curavam muitos doentes, pondo azeite na cabeça deles.
14 Now King Herod heard of Jesus; for his name had become well known. People were saying — “John the Baptizer must have risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are active in him.”
14 O rei Herodes ouviu falar de tudo isso porque a fama de Jesus se havia espalhado por toda parte. Alguns diziam: — Esse homem é João Batista, que foi ressuscitado! Por isso esse homem tem poder para fazer milagres.
15 Others again said — “He is Elijah,” and others — “He is a prophet, like one of the great prophets.”
15 Outros diziam que ele era Elias. Mas alguns afirmavam: — Ele é
16 But when Herod heard of him, he said — “The man whom I beheaded — John — he must be risen!”
16 Quando Herodes ouviu isso, disse: — Ele é João Batista! Eu mandei cortar a cabeça dele, e agora ele foi ressuscitado!
17 For Herod himself had sent and arrested John, and put him in prison, in chains, to please Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because Herod had married her.
17 Pois tinha sido Herodes mesmo quem havia mandado prender João, amarrar as suas mãos e jogá-lo na cadeia. Ele havia feito isso por causa de Herodias, com quem havia casado, embora ela fosse esposa do seu irmão Filipe.
18 For John had said to Herod — “You have no right to be living with your brother’s wife.”
18 Por isso João tinha dito muitas vezes a Herodes: “Pela nossa Lei você é proibido de casar com a esposa do seu irmão!”
19 So Herodias was incensed against John, and wanted to put him to death, but was unable to do so,
19 Herodias estava furiosa com João e queria matá-lo. Mas não podia
20 because Herod stood in fear of John, knowing him to be an upright and holy man, and protected him. He had listened to John, but still remained much perplexed, and yet he found pleasure in listening to him.
20 porque Herodes tinha medo dele, pois sabia que ele era um homem bom e dedicado a Deus. Por isso Herodes protegia João. E, quando o ouvia falar, ficava sem saber o que fazer, mas mesmo assim gostava de escutá-lo.
21 A suitable opportunity, however, occurred when Herod, on his birthday, gave a dinner to his high officials, and his generals, and the foremost men in Galilee.
21 Porém no dia do aniversário de Herodes apareceu a ocasião que Herodias estava esperando. Nesse dia Herodes deu um banquete para as pessoas importantes do seu governo: altos funcionários, chefes militares e autoridades da Galileia.
22 When his daughter — that is, the daughter of Herodias — came in and danced, she delighted Herod and those who were dining with him. “Ask me for whatever you like,” the king said to the girl, “and I will give it to you”;
22 Durante o banquete a filha de Herodias entrou no salão e dançou. Herodes e os seus convidados gostaram muito da dança. Então o rei disse à moça: — Peça o que quiser, e eu lhe darei.
23 and he swore to her that he would give her whatever she asked him — up to half his kingdom.
23 E jurou: — Prometo que darei o que você pedir, mesmo que seja a metade do meu reino!
24 The girl went out, and said to her mother “What must I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptizer,’ answered her mother.
24 Ela foi perguntar à sua mãe o que devia pedir. E a mãe respondeu: — Peça a cabeça de João Batista.
25 So she went in as quickly as possible to the king, and made her request. “I want you,” she said, “to give me at once, on a dish, the head of John the Baptist.”
25 No mesmo instante a moça voltou depressa aonde estava o rei e pediu: — Quero a cabeça de João Batista num prato, agora mesmo!
26 The king was much distressed; yet, because of his oath and of the guests at his table, he did not like to refuse her.
26 Herodes ficou muito triste, mas, por causa do juramento que havia feito na frente dos convidados, não pôde deixar de atender o pedido da moça.
27 He immediately dispatched one of his bodyguard, with orders to bring John’s head. The man went and beheaded John in the prison,
27 Mandou imediatamente um soldado da guarda trazer a cabeça de João. O soldado foi à cadeia, cortou a cabeça de João,
28 and, bringing his head on a dish, gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
28 pôs num prato e deu à moça. E ela a entregou à sua mãe.
29 When John’s disciples heard of it, they came and took his body away, and laid it in a tomb.
29 Quando os discípulos de João souberam disso, vieram, levaram o corpo dele e o sepultaram.
30 When the apostles came back to Jesus, they told him all that they had done and all that they had taught.
30 Os apóstolos voltaram e contaram a Jesus tudo o que tinham feito e ensinado.
31 “Come by yourselves privately to some lonely spot,”he said, “and rest for a while”— for there were so many people coming and going that they had not time even to eat.
31 Havia ali tanta gente, chegando e saindo, que Jesus e os apóstolos não tinham tempo nem para comer. Então ele lhes disse:
32 So they set off privately in their boat for a lonely spot.
32 Então foram sozinhos de barco para um lugar deserto.
33 Many people saw them going, and recognized them, and from all the towns they flocked together to the place on foot, and got there before them.
33 Porém muitas pessoas os viram sair e os reconheceram. De todos os povoados, muitos correram pela margem e chegaram lá antes deles.
34 On getting out of the boat, Jesus saw a great crowd, and his heart was moved at the sight of them, because they were ‘like sheep without a shepherd’; and he began to teach them many things.
34 Quando Jesus desceu do barco, viu a multidão e teve pena daquela gente porque pareciam ovelhas sem pastor. E começou a ensinar muitas coisas.
35 When it grew late, his disciples came up to him, and said: “This is a lonely spot, and it is already late.
35 De tardinha, os discípulos chegaram perto de Jesus e disseram: — Já é tarde, e este lugar é deserto.
36 Send the people away, so that they may go to the farms and villages around and buy themselves something to eat.”
36 Mande esta gente embora, a fim de que vão aos sítios e povoados de perto daqui e comprem alguma coisa para comer.
37 But Jesus answered: “It is for you to give them something to eat.”“Are we to go and spend almost a year's wages on bread,” they asked, “to give them to eat?”
37 Mas Jesus respondeu: Os discípulos disseram: — Para comprarmos pão para toda esta gente, nós precisaríamos de duzentas moedas de prata .
38 “How many loaves have you?”he asked; “Go, and see.”When they had found out, they told him: “Five, and two fishes.”
38 Jesus perguntou: Os discípulos foram ver e disseram: — Temos cinco pães e dois peixes.
39 Jesus directed them to make all the people take their seats on the green grass, in parties;
39 Então Jesus mandou o povo sentar-se em grupos na grama verde.
40 and they sat down in groups — in hundreds, and in fifties.
40 Todos se sentaram em grupos de cem e de cinquenta.
41 Taking the five loaves and the two fishes, Jesus looked up to heaven, and said the blessing; he broke the loaves into pieces, and gave them to his disciples for them to serve out to the people, and he divided the two fishes also among them all.
41 Aí Jesus pegou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, olhou para o céu e deu graças a Deus. Depois partiu os pães e os entregou aos discípulos para que eles distribuíssem ao povo. E também dividiu os dois peixes com todos.
42 Everyone had sufficient to eat;
42 Todos comeram e ficaram satisfeitos.
43 and they picked up enough broken pieces to fill twelve baskets, as well as some of the fish.
43 E os discípulos ainda recolheram doze cestos cheios de pedaços de pão e de peixe.
44 The people who ate the bread were five thousand in number.
44 Foram cinco mil os homens que comeram os pães.
45 Immediately afterwards Jesus made his disciples get into the boat, and cross over in advance, in the direction of Bethsaida, while he himself was dismissing the crowd.
45 Logo depois, Jesus ordenou aos discípulos que subissem no barco e fossem na frente para o povoado de Betsaida, no lado leste do lago, enquanto ele mandava o povo embora.
46 After he had taken leave of the people, he went away up the hill to pray.
46 Depois de se despedir dos discípulos, Jesus subiu um monte a fim de orar ali.
47 When evening fell, the boat was out in the middle of the Sea, and Jesus on the shore alone.
47 Quando chegou a noite, o barco estava no meio do lago, e Jesus estava em terra, sozinho.
48 Seeing them laboring at the oars — for the wind was against them — about three hours after midnight Jesus came towards them, walking on the water, intending to join them.
48 Ele viu que os discípulos estavam remando com dificuldade porque o vento soprava contra eles. Já de madrugada, entre as três e as seis horas, Jesus foi até lá, andando em cima da água, e ia passar adiante deles.
49 But, when they saw him walking on the water, they thought it was a ghost, and cried out;
49 Quando viram Jesus andando em cima da água, os discípulos pensaram que ele era um fantasma e começaram a gritar.
50 for all of them saw him, and were terrified. But Jesus at once spoke to them. “Courage!”he said, “it is I; do not be afraid!”
50 Todos ficaram apavorados com o que viram. Mas logo Jesus falou com eles, dizendo:
51 Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind dropped. The disciples were utterly amazed,
51 Aí subiu no barco com eles, e o vento se acalmou. Os discípulos estavam completamente apavorados.
52 for they had not understood about the loaves, their minds being slow to learn.
52 É que a mente deles estava fechada, e eles não tinham entendido o milagre dos pães.
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret, and moored the boat.
53 Jesus e os discípulos atravessaram o lago e chegaram à região de Genesaré, onde amarraram o barco na praia.
54 But they had no sooner left her than the people, recognizing Jesus,
54 Quando desceram do barco, o povo logo reconheceu Jesus.
55 hurried over the whole country-side, and began to carry about on mats those who were ill, wherever they heard he was.
55 Então, eles saíram correndo por toda aquela região, começaram a trazer os doentes em camas e os levavam para o lugar onde sabiam que Jesus estava.
56 So wherever he went — to villages, or towns, or farms — they would lay their sick in the market-places, begging him to let them touch only the tassel of his cloak; and all who touched were made well.
56 Em todos os lugares aonde ele ia, isto é, nos povoados, nas cidades e nas fazendas, punham os doentes nas praças e pediam a Jesus que os deixasse pelo menos tocar na barra da sua roupa. E todos os que tocavam nela ficavam curados.
