1 On one occasion, as Jesus was going, on a Sabbath into the house of one of the leading Pharisees to dine, they were watching him closely.
1 Aconteceu num sábado que, entrando ele em casa de um dos principais dos fariseus para comer pão, eles o estavam observando.
2 There he saw before him a man who was suffering from dropsy.
2 E eis que estava ali diante dele um certo homem hidrópico.
3 “Is it allowable,”said Jesus, addressing the students of the law and the Pharisees, “to work a cure on the Sabbath, or is it not?”
3 E Jesus, tomando a palavra, falou aos doutores da lei, e aos fariseus, dizendo: É lícito curar no sábado?
4 They remained silent. Jesus took hold of the man and cured him, and sent him away.
4 Eles, porém, calaram-se. E, tomando-o, o curou e despediu.
5 And he said to them: “Which of you, finding that your son or your ox has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull them out on the Sabbath day?”
5 E respondendo-lhes disse: Qual será de vós o que, caindo-lhe num poço, em dia de sábado, o jumento ou o boi, o não tire logo?
6 And they could not make any answer to that.
6 E nada lhe podiam replicar sobre isto.
7 Observing that the guests were choosing the best places for themselves, Jesus told them this parable —
7 E disse aos convidados uma parábola, reparando como escolhiam os primeiros assentos, dizendo-lhes:
8 “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding banquet, do not seat yourself in the best place. Someone of higher rank might have been invited by your host;
8 Quando por alguém fores convidado às bodas, não te assentes no primeiro lugar; não aconteça que esteja convidado outro mais digno do que tu;
9 and the host who invited you both will come and say to you ‘Make room for this person,’ and then you will begin in confusion to take the lowest place.
9 E, vindo o que te convidou a ti e a ele, te diga: Dá o lugar a este; e então, com vergonha, tenhas de tomar o derradeiro lugar.
10 No, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that, when the host who has invited you comes, he may say to you ‘Friend, come higher up’; and then you will be honored in the eyes of all your fellow guests.
10 Mas, quando fores convidado, vai, e assenta-te no derradeiro lugar, para que, quando vier o que te convidou, te diga: Amigo, sobe mais para cima. Então terás honra diante dos que estiverem contigo à mesa.
11 For everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and everyone who humbles themselves will be exalted.”
11 Porquanto qualquer que a si mesmo se exaltar será humilhado, e aquele que a si mesmo se humilhar será exaltado.
12 Then Jesus went on to say to the man who had invited him: “When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not ask your friends, or your brothers or sisters, or your relations, or rich neighbors, because they might invite you in return, and so you should be repaid.
12 E dizia também ao que o tinha convidado: Quando deres um jantar, ou uma ceia, não chames os teus amigos, nem os teus irmãos, nem os teus parentes, nem vizinhos ricos, para que não suceda que também eles te tornem a convidar, e te seja isso recompensado.
13 No, when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
13 Mas, quando fizeres convite, chama os pobres, aleijados, mancos e cegos,
14 and then you will be happy indeed, since they cannot reward you; for you will be rewarded at the resurrection of the good.”
14 E serás bem-aventurado; porque eles não têm com que to recompensar; mas recompensado te será na ressurreição dos justos.
15 One of the guests heard what he said and exclaimed: “Happy will be the person who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
15 E, ouvindo isto, um dos que estavam com ele à mesa, disse-lhe: Bem-aventurado o que comer pão no reino de Deus.
16 But Jesus said to him: “A man was once giving a great dinner. He invited many people,
16 Porém, ele lhe disse: Um certo homem fez uma grande ceia, e convidou a muitos.
17 and sent his servant, when it was time for the dinner, to say to those who had been invited ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
17 E à hora da ceia mandou o seu servo dizer aos convidados: Vinde, que já tudo está preparado.
18 They all with one accord began to ask to be excused. The first said to the servant ‘I have bought a field and am obliged to go and look at it. I must ask you to consider me excused.’
18 E todos à uma começaram a escusar-se. Disse-lhe o primeiro: Comprei um campo, e importa ir vê-lo; rogo-te que me hajas por escusado.
19 The next said ‘I have bought five pairs of bullocks, and I am on my way to try them. I must ask you to consider me excused’;
19 E outro disse: Comprei cinco juntas de bois, e vou experimentá-los; rogo-te que me hajas por escusado.
20 while the next said ‘I am just married, and for that reason I am unable to come.’
20 E outro disse: Casei, e portanto não posso ir.
21 On his return the servant told his master all these answers. Then in anger the owner of the house said to his servant ‘Go out at once into the streets and alleys of the town, and bring in here the poor, and the crippled, and the blind, and the lame.’
21 E, voltando aquele servo, anunciou estas coisas ao seu senhor. Então o pai de família, indignado, disse ao seu servo: Sai depressa pelas ruas e bairros da cidade, e traze aqui os pobres, e aleijados, e mancos e cegos.
22 Presently the servant said ‘Sir, your order has been carried out, and still there is room.’
22 E disse o servo: Senhor, feito está como mandaste; e ainda há lugar.
23 ‘Go out,’ the master said, ‘into the roads and hedgerows, and make people come in, so that my house may be filled;
23 E disse o senhor ao servo: Sai pelos caminhos e valados, e força-os a entrar, para que a minha casa se encha.
24 for I tell you all that not one of those people who were invited will taste my dinner.’”
24 Porque eu vos digo que nenhum daqueles homens que foram convidados provará a minha ceia.
25 One day, when great crowds of people were walking with Jesus, he turned and said to them:
25 Ora, ia com ele uma grande multidão; e, voltando-se, disse-lhe:
26 “If any one comes to me and does not hate their father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes and even their life, he can be no disciple of mine.
26 Se alguém vier a mim, e não aborrecer a seu pai, e mãe, e mulher, e filhos, e irmãos, e irmãs, e ainda também a sua própria vida, não pode ser meu discípulo.
27 Whoever does not carry their own cross, and walk in my steps, can be no disciple of mine.
27 E qualquer que não levar a sua cruz, e não vier após mim, não pode ser meu discípulo.
28 Why, which of you, when you want to build a tower, does not first sit down and reckon the cost, to see if you have enough to complete it? —
28 Pois qual de vós, querendo edificar uma torre, não se assenta primeiro a fazer as contas dos gastos, para ver se tem com que a acabar?
29 Otherwise, if you have laid the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will laugh at you,
29 Para que não aconteça que, depois de haver posto os alicerces, e não a podendo acabar, todos os que a virem comecem a escarnecer dele,
30 and say ‘Here is a person who began to build and was not able to finish!’
30 Dizendo: Este homem começou a edificar e não pôde acabar.
31 Or what king, when he is setting out to fight another king, does not first sit down and consider if with ten thousand men he is able to meet one who is coming against him with twenty thousand?
31 Ou qual é o rei que, indo à guerra a pelejar contra outro rei, não se assenta primeiro a tomar conselho sobre se com dez mil pode sair ao encontro do que vem contra ele com vinte mil?
32 And if he cannot, then, while the other is still at a distance, he sends envoys and asks for terms of peace.
32 De outra maneira, estando o outro ainda longe, manda embaixadores, e pede condições de paz.
33 And so with everyone of you who does not bid farewell to all you have — you cannot be a disciple of mine.
33 Assim, pois, qualquer de vós, que não renuncia a tudo quanto tem, não pode ser meu discípulo.
34 Yes, salt is good; but, if the salt itself should lose its strength, what will be used to season it?
34 Bom é o sal; mas, se o sal degenerar, com que se há de salgar?
35 It is not fit either for the land or for the manure heap. People throw it away. Let those who have ears to hear with hear!”
35 Nem presta para a terra, nem para o monturo; lançam-no fora. Quem tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça.
