1 I beg you, then — I who am a prisoner in the Master’s cause — to live lives worthy of the call that you have received;
1 Portanto eu, o preso do Senhor, rogo-vos que andeis como é digno da vocação com que fostes chamados,
2 always humble and gentle, patient, bearing lovingly with one another,
2 com toda a humildade e mansidão, com longanimidade, suportando-vos uns aos outros em amor;
3 and striving to maintain in the bond of peace the unity given by the Spirit.
3 procurando guardar a unidade do Espírito pelo vínculo da paz.
4 There is but one body and one Spirit, just as there was but one hope set before you when you received your call.
4 Há um só corpo e um só Espírito, como também fostes chamados em uma só esperança da vossa vocação;
5 There is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism.
5 um só Senhor, uma só fé, um só batismo;
6 There is but one God and Father of all — the God who is over all, pervades all, and is in all.
6 um só Deus e Pai de todos, o qual é sobre todos, e através de todos, e em todos vós.
7 Everyone of us, however, has been entrusted with some charge, each in accordance with the extent of the gift of the Christ.
7 Mas a cada um de nós a graça foi dada, segundo a medida do dom de Cristo.
8 That is why it is said — ‘When he went up on high, he led his captives into captivity. And gave gifts to humanity.’
8 Pelo que ele diz: Quando subiu ao alto, levou cativo o cativeiro, e deu dons aos homens.
9 Now surely this ‘going up’ must imply that he had already gone down into the world beneath.
9 (Agora que ele ascendeu, que é, senão o que também descendeu primeiro às partes inferiores da terra?
10 He who went down is the same as he who went up — up beyond the highest heaven, so that he might fill all things with his presence.
10 Aquele que desceu é também o mesmo que subiu acima de todos os céus, para cumprir todas as coisas).
11 And he it is who gave to the church apostles, prophets, Missionaries, Pastors, and teachers,
11 E ele mesmo deu alguns para apóstolos, e alguns para profetas, e alguns para evangelistas, e alguns para pastores e professores,
12 to fit his people for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of the Christ.
12 para o aperfeiçoamento dos santos, para a obra do ministério, para a edificação do corpo de Cristo,
13 And this will continue, until we all attain to that unity which is given by faith and by a fuller knowledge of the Son of God; until we reach maturity — the full standard of the perfection of the Christ.
13 até que todos cheguemos à unidade da fé e ao conhecimento do Filho de Deus, a homem perfeito, à medida da estatura da plenitude de Cristo;
14 Then we will no longer be like infants, tossed backward and forward, blown about by every breath of human teaching and by people's trickery and craftiness;
14 para que não sejamos mais crianças, atiradas para lá e para cá, e carregadas por todo vento de doutrina, pela artimanha e astúcia dos homens que ficam à espreita para enganar.
15 but holding the truth in a spirit of love, we will grow into complete union with him who is our head — Christ himself.
15 Antes, dizendo a verdade em amor, cresçamos em todas as coisas naquele que é a cabeça, Cristo,
16 For from him the whole body, closely joined and knit together by the contact of every part with the source of its life, derives its power to grow, in proportion to the vigour of each individual part; and so is being built up in a spirit of love.
16 do qual todo o corpo, bem ajustado e compactado pelo auxílio de todas as juntas, segundo a eficaz operação de cada parte, faz o aumento do corpo, para sua edificação em amor.
17 This, then, as one in union with the Lord, I implore: Do not continue to live such purposeless lives as the Gentiles live,
17 E, portanto, digo isto e testifico no Senhor, para que não andeis mais como andam também os outros gentios, na vaidade da sua mente;
18 with their powers of discernment darkened, cut off from the life of God, owing to the ignorance that prevails among them and to the hardness of their hearts.
18 com seu entendimento obscurecido, separados da vida de Deus, pela ignorância que há neles, pela cegueira do seu coração,
19 Lost to all sense of shame, they have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, in order to practice every kind of impurity without restraint.
19 os quais, havendo perdido todo o sentimento, se entregaram à lascívia, para cometerem toda impureza com ganância.
20 But far different is the lesson you learned from the Christ — if, that is, you really listened to him,
20 Mas vós não aprendestes assim a Cristo;
21 and through union with him were taught the truth, as it is to be found in Jesus.
21 se é que o tendes ouvido e por ele fostes ensinados, como a verdade está em Jesus,
22 For you learned with regard to your former way of living that you must cast off your old nature, which, yielding to deluding passions, grows corrupt;
22 que, concernente ao procedimento anterior, vos despojeis do velho homem, que é corrupto segundo as cobiças do engano;
23 that the spirit of your minds must be constantly renewed;
23 e vos renoveis no espírito da vossa mente;
24 and that you must clothe yourselves in that new nature which was created to resemble God, with the righteousness and holiness springing from the truth.
24 e vos revistais do novo homem, que, segundo Deus, é criado em justiça e verdadeira santidade.
25 Since, therefore, you have cast off what is false, ‘you must every one of you speak the truth to your neighbors.’ For we are united to one another like the parts of a body.
25 Por isso deixai a mentira e falai a verdade cada um com o seu próximo; porque somos membros uns dos outros.
26 ‘Be angry, yet do not sin.’ Do not let the sun go down on your anger;
26 Irai-vos e não pequeis; não se ponha o sol sobre a vossa ira.
27 and give no opportunity to the devil.
27 Nem deis lugar ao diabo.
28 Let the person who steals steal no longer, but rather let them toil with their hands at honest work, so that they may have something to share with anyone in need.
28 Aquele que furtava não furte mais; antes, trabalhe, fazendo com suas mãos aquilo que é bom, para que tenha o que dar ao que tiver necessidade.
29 Never let any foul word pass your lips, but only such good words as the occasion demands, so that they may be a help to those who hear them.
29 Que nenhuma palavra imprópria proceda de vossa boca, mas aquilo que é bom para promover a edificação, para que ministre graça aos que a ouvem.
30 And do not grieve God’s Holy Spirit; for it was through that Spirit that God sealed you as his, against the day of Redemption.
30 E não entristeçais o Espírito Santo de Deus, no qual estais selados para o dia da redenção.
31 Let all bitterness, passion, anger, brawling, and abusive language be banished from among you, as well as all malice.
31 Toda amargura, e ira, e cólera, e tumulto, e blasfêmias, e toda a malícia seja tirada de entre vós.
32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, ready to forgive one another, just as God, in Christ, forgave you.
32 E sede amáveis uns para com os outros, compassivos, perdoando-vos uns aos outros, como também Deus vos perdoou por causa de Cristo.
