¹ And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister --

² and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing --

² Maria era quem ungira o Senhor com o óleo perfumado e lhe enxugara os pés com os seus cabelos. E Lázaro, que estava enfermo, era seu irmão.

³ therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, 'Sir, lo, he whom you do love is ailing;'

³ Suas irmãs mandaram, pois, dizer a Jesus: Senhor, aquele que tu amas está enfermo.

⁴ and Jesus having heard, said, 'This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'

⁴ A estas palavras, disse-lhes Jesus: Esta enfermidade não causará a morte, mas tem por finalidade a glória de Deus. Por ela será glorificado o Filho de Deus.

⁵ And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,

⁵ Ora, Jesus amava Marta, Maria, sua irmã, e Lázaro.

⁶ when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,

⁶ Mas, embora tivesse ouvido que ele estava enfermo, demorou-se ainda dois dias no mesmo lugar.

⁷ then after this, he said to the disciples, 'We may go to Judea again;'

⁷ Depois, disse a seus discípulos: Voltemos para a Judéia.

⁸ the disciples say to him, 'Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone you, and again you do go thither!'

⁸ Mestre, responderam eles, há pouco os judeus te queriam apedrejar, e voltas para lá?

⁹ Jesus answered, 'Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he does not stumble, because the light of this world he does see;

⁹ Jesus respondeu: Não são doze as horas do dia? Quem caminha de dia não tropeça, porque vê a luz deste mundo.

¹⁰ and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.'

¹⁰ Mas quem anda de noite tropeça, porque lhe falta a luz.

¹¹ These things he said, and after this he said to them, 'Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;'

¹¹ Depois destas palavras, ele acrescentou: Lázaro, nosso amigo, dorme, mas vou despertá-lo.

¹² therefore said his disciples, 'Sir, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved;'

¹² Disseram-lhe os seus discípulos: Senhor, se ele dorme, há de sarar.

¹³ but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaks.

¹³ Jesus, entretanto, falara da sua morte, mas eles pensavam que falasse do sono como tal.

¹⁴ Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, 'Lazarus has died;

¹⁴ Então Jesus lhes declarou abertamente: Lázaro morreu.

¹⁵ and I rejoice, for your sake, (that you may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;'

¹⁵ Alegro-me por vossa causa, por não ter estado lá, para que creiais. Mas vamos a ele.

¹⁶ therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, 'We may go -- we also, that we may die with him,'

¹⁷ Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.

¹⁸ And Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,

¹⁸ Ora, Betânia distava de Jerusalém cerca de quinze estádios.

¹⁹ and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;

²⁰ Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus does come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.

²⁰ Mal soube Marta da vinda de Jesus, saiu-lhe ao encontro. Maria, porém, estava sentada em casa.

²¹ Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, 'Sir, if you hadst been here, my brother had not died;

²¹ Marta disse a Jesus: Senhor, se tivesses estado aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido!

²² but even now, I have known that whatever you may ask of God, God will give to you;'

²² Mas sei também, agora, que tudo o que pedires a Deus, Deus to concederá.

²³ Jesus said to her, 'Your brother shall rise again.'

²³ Disse-lhe Jesus: Teu irmão ressurgirá.

²⁴ Martha said to him, 'I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'

²⁴ Respondeu-lhe Marta: Sei que há de ressurgir na ressurreição no último dia.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, 'I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;

²⁵ Disse-lhe Jesus: Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida. Aquele que crê em mim, ainda que esteja morto, viverá.

²⁶ and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die -- to the age;

²⁶ E todo aquele que vive e crê em mim, jamais morrerá. Crês nisto?

²⁷ believe you this?' she said to him, 'Yes, sir, I have believed that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'

²⁷ Respondeu ela: Sim, Senhor. Eu creio que tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, aquele que devia vir ao mundo.

²⁸ And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, 'The Teacher is present, and does call you;'

²⁸ A essas palavras, ela foi chamar sua irmã Maria, dizendo-lhe baixinho: O Mestre está aí e te chama.

²⁹ she, when she heard, rises up quickly, and does come to him;

²⁹ Apenas ela o ouviu, levantou-se imediatamente e foi ao encontro dele.

³⁰ and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;

³⁰ {Pois Jesus não tinha chegado à aldeia, mas estava ainda naquele lugar onde Marta o tinha encontrado.}

³¹ the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying -- 'She does go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'

³¹ Os judeus que estavam com ela em casa, em visita de pêsames, ao verem Maria levantar-se depressa e sair, seguiram-na, crendo que ela ia ao sepulcro para ali chorar.

³² Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, 'Sir, if you hadst been here, my brother had not died;'

³² Quando, porém, Maria chegou onde Jesus estava e o viu, lançou-se aos seus pés e disse-lhe: Senhor, se tivesses estado aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido!

³³ Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,

³³ Ao vê-la chorar assim, como também todos os judeus que a acompanhavam, Jesus ficou intensamente comovido em espírito. E, sob o impulso de profunda emoção,

³⁴ 'Where have you laid him?' they say to him, 'Sir, come and see;'

³⁴ perguntou: Onde o pusestes? Responderam-lhe: Senhor, vinde ver.

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁵ Jesus pôs-se a chorar.

³⁶ The Jews, therefore, said, 'Lo, how he was loving him!'

³⁶ Observaram por isso os judeus: Vede como ele o amava!

³⁷ and certain of them said, 'Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?'

³⁷ Mas alguns deles disseram: Não podia ele, que abriu os olhos do cego de nascença, fazer com que este não morresse?

³⁸ Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, comes to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,

³⁸ Tomado, novamente, de profunda emoção, Jesus foi ao sepulcro. Era uma gruta, coberta por uma pedra.

³⁹ Jesus said, 'Take you away the stone;' the sister of him who has died -- Martha -- said to him, 'Sir, already he stinks, for he is four days dead;'

³⁹ Jesus ordenou: Tirai a pedra. Disse-lhe Marta, irmã do morto: Senhor, já cheira mal, pois há quatro dias que ele está aí...

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, 'Said I not to you, that if you may believe, you shall see the glory of God?'

⁴⁰ Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Não te disse eu: Se creres, verás a glória de Deus? Tiraram, pois, a pedra.

⁴¹ They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, 'Father, I thank You, that You did hear me;

⁴¹ Levantando Jesus os olhos ao alto, disse: Pai, rendo-te graças, porque me ouviste.

⁴² and I knew that You always do hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I saidit, that they may believe that You did send me.'

⁴² Eu bem sei que sempre me ouves, mas falo assim por causa do povo que está em roda, para que creiam que tu me enviaste.

⁴³ And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, 'Lazarus, come forth;'

⁴³ Depois destas palavras, exclamou em alta voz: Lázaro, vem para fora!

⁴⁴ and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus said to them, 'Loose him, and suffer to go.'

⁴⁴ E o morto saiu, tendo os pés e as mãos ligados com faixas, e o rosto coberto por um sudário. Ordenou então Jesus: Desligai-o e deixai-o ir.

⁴⁵ Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;

⁴⁵ Muitos dos judeus, que tinham vindo a Marta e Maria e viram o que Jesus fizera, creram nele.

⁴⁶ but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;

⁴⁶ Alguns deles, porém, foram aos fariseus e lhes contaram o que Jesus realizara.

⁴⁷ the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrin, and said, 'What may we do? because this man does many signs?

⁴⁷ Os pontífices e os fariseus convocaram o conselho e disseram: Que faremos? Esse homem multiplica os milagres.

⁴⁸ if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.'

⁴⁸ Se o deixarmos proceder assim, todos crerão nele, e os romanos virão e arruinarão a nossa cidade e toda a nação.

⁴⁹ and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, 'You have not known anything,

⁴⁹ Um deles, chamado Caifás, que era o sumo sacerdote daquele ano, disse-lhes: Vós não entendeis nada!

⁵⁰ nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.'

⁵⁰ Nem considerais que vos convém que morra um só homem pelo povo, e que não pereça toda a nação.

⁵¹ And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

⁵¹ E ele não disse isso por si mesmo, mas, como era o sumo sacerdote daquele ano, profetizava que Jesus havia de morrer pela nação,

⁵² and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.

⁵² e não somente pela nação, mas também para que fossem reconduzidos à unidade os filhos de Deus dispersos.

⁵³ From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;

⁵³ E desde aquele momento resolveram tirar-lhe a vida.

⁵⁴ Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.

⁵⁴ Em conseqüência disso, Jesus já não andava em público entre os judeus. Retirou-se para uma região vizinha do deserto, a uma cidade chamada Efraim, e ali se detinha com seus discípulos.

⁵⁵ And the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;

⁵⁵ Estava próxima a Páscoa dos judeus, e muita gente de todo o país subia a Jerusalém antes da Páscoa para se purificar.

⁵⁶ they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, 'What does appear to you -- that he may not come to the feast?'

⁵⁶ Procuravam Jesus e falavam uns com os outros no templo: Que vos parece? Achais que ele não virá à festa?

⁵⁷ and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may show it, so that they may seize him.

⁵⁷ Mas os sumos sacerdotes e os fariseus tinham dado ordem para que todo aquele que soubesse onde ele estava o denunciasse, para o prenderem.
