1 Then Job answered:
1 Então Jó respondeu:
2 "No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you.
2 “Na verdade, vocês são o povo, e com vocês morrerá a sabedoria.
3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these?
3 Mas eu também tenho entendimento; em nada sou inferior a vocês. Quem não sabe coisas como essas?
4 I am a laughingstock to my friends; I, who called upon God and he answered me, a just and blameless man, am a laughingstock.
4 Eu sou motivo de riso para os meus amigos — eu, que invocava a Deus, e ele me respondia; o justo e o reto são motivo de riso.
5 In the thought of one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; it is ready for those whose feet slip.
5 No pensamento de quem está seguro há desprezo pela desgraça, um empurrão para aquele cujos pés já vacilam.
6 The tents of robbers are at peace, and those who provoke God are secure, who bring their god in their hand.
6 Os opressores têm paz em suas tendas, e os que provocam a Deus estão seguros; o deus deles é a sua própria força.”
7 "But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
7 “Mas pergunte agora aos animais, e cada um deles o ensinará; pergunte às aves do céu, e elas lhe contarão.
8 or the plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
8 Ou fale com a terra, e ela o instruirá; até os peixes do mar lhe contarão.
9 Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
9 De todos estes, quem não sabe que a mão do
10 In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
10 Na sua mão está a vida de todos os seres vivos e o espírito de todo o gênero humano.
11 Does not the ear try words as the palate tastes food?
11 Por acaso, o ouvido não avalia as palavras, assim como o paladar prova as comidas?”
12 Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days.
12 “Está a sabedoria com os idosos? Será que a longevidade traz o entendimento?
13 "With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding.
13 Com Deus estão a sabedoria e a força; ele tem conselho e entendimento.
14 If he tears down, none can rebuild; if he shuts a man in, none can open.
14 O que ele derruba não pode ser reconstruído; se ele lança alguém na prisão, ninguém a pode abrir.
15 If he withholds the waters, they dry up; if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land.
15 Se ele retém as águas, elas secam; se ele as solta, elas devastam a terra.”
16 With him are strength and wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are his.
16 “Com ele estão a força e a sabedoria; a ele pertencem o enganado e o enganador.
17 He leads counselors away stripped, and judges he makes fools.
17 Ele leva os conselheiros embora, descalços, e faz os juízes de tolos.
18 He looses the bonds of kings, and binds a waistcloth on their loins.
18 Solta os laços que prendem os reis e amarra uma corda aos seus lombos.
19 He leads priests away stripped, and overthrows the mighty.
19 Ele leva os sacerdotes embora, descalços, e transtorna os poderosos.
20 He deprives of speech those who are trusted, and takes away the discernment of the elders.
20 Deixa os conselheiros sem palavras e tira o entendimento dos anciãos.
21 He pours contempt on princes, and looses the belt of the strong.
21 Lança desprezo sobre os príncipes e afrouxa o cinto dos fortes.
22 He uncovers the deeps out of darkness, and brings deep darkness to light.
22 Das trevas revela coisas profundas e traz à luz a densa escuridão.
23 He makes nations great, and he destroys them: he enlarges nations, and leads them away.
23 Deus engrandece as nações e depois as destrói; dispersa-as e de novo as congrega.
24 He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, and makes them wander in a pathless waste.
24 Tira o entendimento dos chefes do povo da terra e os faz vaguear pelos desertos sem caminhos.
25 They grope in the dark without light; and he makes them stagger like a drunken man.
25 Nas trevas andam tateando, sem terem luz; ele os faz cambalear como bêbados.”
