1 And Jethro, priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heard all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people,in that Yahweh had brought forth Israel out of Egypt.
1 Jetro, sacerdote de Midiã e sogro de Moisés, soube de tudo o que Deus tinha feito por Moisés e pelo povo de Israel, como o Senhor havia tirado Israel do Egito.
2 So Jethro, Moses father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses wife,after she had been sent home;
2 Moisés tinha mandado Zípora, sua mulher, para a casa de seu sogro Jetro, que a recebeu
3 and her two sons,of whom, the name of the one, was Gershom, for, said he, A sojourner, am I in a strange land,
3 juntamente com os seus dois filhos. Um deles chamava-se Gérson, pois Moisés dissera: "Tornei-me imigrante em terra estrangeira";
4 and, the name of the other, Eliezer, for the God of my father, was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.
4 e o outro chamava-se Eliézer, pois dissera: "O Deus de meu pai foi o meu ajudador; livrou-me da espada do faraó".
5 And Jethro, Moses father-in-law, came in, with his two sons and his wife, unto Moses,into the desert where, he, was encamping, the mountain of God;
5 Jetro, sogro de Moisés, veio com os filhos e a mulher de Moisés encontrá-lo no deserto, onde estava acampado, perto do monte de Deus.
6 and said unto Moses, I, thy father-in-law, Jethro, am coming in unto thee,and thy wife, and her two sons, with her.
6 E Jetro mandou dizer-lhe: "Eu, seu sogro Jetro, estou indo encontrá-lo, e comigo vão sua mulher e seus dois filhos".
7 So Moses went forth to meet his father-in-law, and bowed himself down to him and kissed him, and they asked each other of their welfare,and came into the tent.
7 Então Moisés saiu ao encontro do sogro, curvou-se e beijou-o; trocaram saudações e depois entraram na tenda.
8 Then Moses recounted to his father-in-law, all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians, for Israels sake,all the hardship which had befallen them by the way, and how Yahweh had delivered them.
8 Então Moisés contou ao sogro tudo quanto o Senhor tinha feito ao faraó e aos egípcios por amor a Israel e também todas as dificuldades que tinham enfrentado pelo caminho e como o Senhor os livrara.
9 Then did Jethro rejoice, for all the good which Yahweh had done to Israel,whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
9 Jetro alegrou-se ao ouvir todas as coisas boas que o Senhor tinha feito a Israel, libertando-o das mãos dos egípcios.
10 And Jethro saidBlessed be Yahweh, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh,Who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians:
10 Disse ele: "Bendito seja o Senhor que os libertou das mãos dos egípcios e do faraó; que livrou o povo das mãos dos egípcios!
11 Now, I know, that, greater, is Yahweh than all the gods,Even in the thing wherein they were arrogant over them.
11 Agora sei que o Senhor é maior do que todos os outros deuses, pois ele os superou exatamente naquilo de que se vangloriavam".
12 Then took Jethro father-in-law of Moses, an ascending-offering and sacrifices to God,and Aaron and all the elders of Israel came in to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses before God.
12 Então Jetro, sogro de Moisés, ofereceu um holocausto e sacrifícios a Deus, e Arão veio com todas as autoridades de Israel para comerem com o sogro de Moisés na presença de Deus.
13 Now it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat, to judge the people,and the people stood by Moses, from the morning, until the evening.
13 No dia seguinte Moisés assentou-se para julgar as questões do povo, e este permaneceu de pé diante dele, desde a manhã até o cair da tarde.
14 And when Moses father-in-law saw all that he, was doing for the people, he saidWhat is this thing which, thou, art doing for the people? Wherefore art, thou, sitting alone, with all the people, stationed by thee, from morning until evening?
14 Quando o seu sogro viu tudo o que ele estava fazendo pelo povo, disse: "Que é que você está fazendo? Por que só você se assenta para julgar, e todo este povo o espera de pé, desde a manhã até o cair da tarde? "
15 And Moses said to his father-in-law,Because the people come in unto me to seek God:
15 Moisés lhe respondeu: "O povo me procura para que eu consulte a Deus.
16 When they have a matter, they come in unto me, then do I judge between a man and his neighbour,and make known the statutes of God and his laws.
16 Toda vez que alguém tem uma questão, esta me é trazida, e eu decido entre as partes, e ensino-lhes os decretos e leis de Deus".
17 Then said Moses father-in-law unto him,Not good, is the thing that thou art doing.
17 Respondeu o sogro de Moisés: "O que você está fazendo não é bom.
18 Thou wilt get quite worn out, both thou and this people that is with thee,for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou canst not do it, alone.
18 Você e o seu povo ficarão esgotados, pois esta tarefa lhe é pesada demais. Você não pode executá-la sozinho.
19 Now, hearken thou to my voicelet me counsel thee, and may God be with thee: Be, thou, for the people, in front of God, so shalt, thou, bring the matters unto God;
19 Agora, ouça-me! Eu lhe darei um conselho, e que Deus esteja com você! Seja você o representante do povo diante de Deus e leve a Deus as suas questões.
20 and shalt cause to shine upon them, the statutes and the laws,and make known to them the way wherein they should go, and the work they should do.
20 Oriente-os quanto aos decretos e leis, mostrando-lhes como devem viver e o que devem fazer.
21 Thou thyself, therefore shalt look out, from among all the peoplemen of ability, reverers of God, men of fidelity, haters of extortion,and place them over as rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
21 Mas escolha dentre todo o povo homens capazes, tementes a Deus, dignos de confiança e inimigos de ganho desonesto. Estabeleça-os como chefes de mil, de cem, de cinqüenta e de dez.
22 So shall they judge the people at any time, and it shall be, all the great matters, shall they bring in unto thee, but all the small matters, shall, they themselves, judge,so, lighten thou the burden for thyself, and let them bear it with thee.
22 Eles estarão sempre à disposição do povo para julgar as questões. Trarão a você apenas as questões difíceis; as mais simples decidirão sozinhos. Isso tornará mais leve o seu fardo, porque eles o dividirão com você.
23 If, this thing, thou wilt do, and God shall command thee, then shalt thou be able to endure,yea, moreover, all this people, shall go in, unto their dwellings, contented.
23 Se você assim fizer, e se assim Deus ordenar, você será capaz de suportar as dificuldades, e todo este povo voltará para casa satisfeito".
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said;
24 Moisés aceitou o conselho do sogro e fez tudo como ele tinha sugerido.
25 and Moses chose men of ability out of all Israel, and set them to be heads over the people,rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
25 Escolheu homens capazes de todo o Israel e colocou-os como líderes do povo: chefes de mil, de cem, de cinqüenta e de dez.
26 And they shall judge the people, at any time,the hard matters, shall they bring in unto Moses, but all the small matters, shall, they themselves, judge.
26 Estes ficaram como juízes permanentes do povo. As questões difíceis levavam a Moisés; as mais simples, porém, eles mesmos resolviam.
27 And Moses sent forth his father-in-law,and he went his way by himself unto his own land.
27 Então Moisés e seu sogro se despediram, e este voltou para a sua terra.
