1 Said, I, in my heart, Come now! I will prove thee with gladness, and look thou on blessedness,but lo! even that, was vanity.
1 Eu disse a mim mesmo: “Vamos! Prove a alegria; procure ser feliz.” Mas também isso era vaidade.
2 Of laughter, I said, Madness! and, of mirth, What can it do?
2 Concluí que o riso é tolice e que a alegria não serve para nada.
3 I sought out with my heart, to cherish with wine, my flesh,but, my heart, was to guide with wisdom, even in laying hold of folly, until I should see which was blessedness for the sons of men, as to that which they could do, under the heavens, during the number of the days of their life.
3 Resolvi no meu coração entregar-me ao vinho, sem deixar de me guiar pela sabedoria e de me apoderar da loucura, até descobrir o que de bom os filhos dos homens poderiam fazer debaixo do céu, durante os poucos dias da sua vida.
4 I enlarged my works,I built me houses, I planted me vineyards;
4 Empreendi grandes obras. Construí casas e plantei vinhas para mim.
5 I made me gardens, and parks,I planted in them trees of every kind of fruit;
5 Fiz jardins e pomares para mim e neles plantei árvores frutíferas de toda espécie.
6 I made me pools of water,to irrigate therefrom the thick-set saplings growing up into trees:
6 Fiz para mim tanques de águas, para com eles regar o bosque em que reverdeciam as árvores.
7 I acquired, men-servants and women-servants, and, the children of the household, were mine,also possessions, herds and flocks in abundance, were mine, beyond all who had been before me in Jerusalem;
7 Comprei escravos e escravas e tive escravos que nasceram em minha casa. Também tive bois e ovelhas, mais do que tiveram todos os que viveram em Jerusalém antes de mim.
8 I heaped me up, both silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings, and provinces,I provided me singing-men and singing-women, and the delights of the sons of men, a wife and wives.
8 Amontoei também para mim prata e ouro e tesouros de reis e de províncias. Provi-me de cantores e cantoras e das delícias dos filhos dos homens: mulheres e mais mulheres.
9 So I became great, and increased, more than any one who had been before me in Jerusalem,moreover, my wisdom, remained with me;
9 Eu me tornei importante e superei todos os que viveram antes de mim em Jerusalém; e a minha sabedoria nunca me abandonou.
10 and, nothing that mine eyes asked, withheld I from them,I did not keep back my heart from any gladness, for, my heart, obtained gladness out of all my toil, and so, this, was my portion, out of all my toil.
10 Tudo aquilo que os meus olhos desejaram eu não lhes neguei, nem privei o meu coração de alegria alguma, pois eu me alegrava com todas as minhas fadigas, e isso era a recompensa por todas elas.
11 When, I, looked upon all my works, which my hands had made, and on my toil, whereon I had toilsomely wrought, then lo! all, was vanity, and feeding on wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
11 Considerei todas as obras que as minhas mãos fizeram, e também o trabalho que eu, com fadigas, havia feito; e eis que tudo era vaidade e correr atrás do vento, e nenhum proveito havia debaixo do sol.
12 Thus turned, I, to look at wisdom, and madness and folly,for what can the man that which, already, men have done.
12 Então passei a refletir sobre a sabedoria, a tolice e a falta de juízo. O que poderá fazer o sucessor do rei? O mesmo que outros já fizeram.
13 Then saw, I, that wisdom doth excel folly,as far as light excelleth darkness.
13 Então vi que a sabedoria é mais proveitosa do que a falta de juízo, assim como a luz traz mais proveito do que as trevas.
14 As for the wise man, his eyes, are in his head, whereas, the dullard, in darkness, doth walk,but, I myself, knew that, one destiny, happeneth to them, all.
14 O sábio tem os seus olhos bem abertos, enquanto o tolo anda em trevas; contudo, entendi que a mesma coisa acontece com ambos.
15 Then said, I, in my heart, As it happeneth to the dullard, even to me, will it happen, but wherefore, then, became, I, wise to excess? Therefore spake I, in my heart, Even this, is vanity.
15 Aí eu disse a mim mesmo: “O que acontece com o tolo acontece comigo também; de que adianta, então, ser sábio?” Então eu disse a mim mesmo que também isso era vaidade.
16 For there is no remembrance of a wise man, more than of a dullard, unto times age-abiding,seeing that, already, in the days to come, all hath been forgotten, how then cometh it that the wise man dieth equally with the dullard?
16 Pois nem o sábio nem o tolo serão lembrados para sempre; pois, passados alguns dias, tudo cai no esquecimento. Ah! O sábio morre do mesmo modo que o tolo!
17 Therefore I hated life, for, a vexation unto me, was the work which was done under the sun,for, all, was vanity, and a feeding on wind.
17 Por isso perdi o gosto pela vida, pois me foi pesado demais o trabalho que se faz debaixo do sol. Sim, tudo é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
18 Therefore hated, I, all my toil, wherein I was toiling, under the sun,in that I should leave it for the man who should come after me;
18 Também perdi o gosto por todo o meu trabalho, com que me afadiguei debaixo do sol, pois o resultado de tudo isso ficará para quem vier depois de mim.
19 and who could know whether a, wise man, he would be or a foolish, and yet he would lord it over all my toil, wherein I had toiled and wherein I had acted wisely, under the sun,even this, was vanity.
19 E quem pode dizer se ele será um sábio ou um tolo? No entanto, ele terá domínio sobre todo o ganho das minhas fadigas e sabedoria debaixo do sol. Também isto é vaidade.
20 Then resolved I, to give my heart over to despair,concerning all the toil, wherein I had toiled, under the sun.
20 Então tratei de fazer com que o meu coração perdesse a esperança de todo trabalho com que me afadiguei debaixo do sol.
21 For here is a man, whose toil hath been with wisdom and with knowledge and with skill,yet, to a man who hath not toiled therein, shall he leave it as his portion, even this, was vanity and a great vexation.
21 Porque uma pessoa pode fazer o seu trabalho com sabedoria, conhecimento e habilidade, mas deixará o seu ganho como herança a quem por ele não se esforçou. Também isto é vaidade e grande mal.
22 For what hath the man for all his toil, and for the striving of his heart,wherein, he himself, toiled under the sun?
22 Pois que proveito alguém tem de todo o seu trabalho e da fadiga do seu coração, em que anda trabalhando debaixo do sol?
23 For, all his days, are pains, and, vexatious, is his employment, even in the night, his heart lieth not down,even this, was, vanity.
23 Porque todos os seus dias são cheios de dor, e o seu trabalho é desgosto; nem de noite o seu coração descansa. Também isto é vaidade.
24 There was nothing more blessed for Man that he should eat and drink, and see his desireth for blessedness in his toil,even this, saw, I myself, that, from the hand of God, it was.
24 Não há nada melhor para o ser humano do que comer, beber e fazer com que a sua alma desfrute o que conseguiu do seu trabalho. No entanto, vi também que isto vem da mão de Deus,
25 For who could eat and who could enjoy, so well as I?
25 pois, separado deste, quem pode comer ou quem pode alegrar-se?
26 For, to a man who is good before him, hath he given wisdom and knowledge and gladness,whereas, to the sinner, he hath given employment, to gather and heap up, to give to one who is good before God, even this, was vanity, and a feeding on wind.
26 Porque Deus dá sabedoria, conhecimento e prazer à pessoa que lhe agrada; mas ao pecador dá trabalho, para que ele ajunte e amontoe, a fim de dar àquele que agrada a Deus. Também isto é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
