1 THERE was in Caesarea a man named Cornelius, a centurion in the battalion called the Italian cohort.
1 Um homem em Cesaréia, por nome Cornélio, centurião da corte chamada italiana,
2 He was a pious man, reverencing God with all his household, doing many acts of charity to the people and praying to God constantly.
2 piedoso e temente a Deus com toda a sua casa, e que fazia muitas esmolas ao povo e de contínuo orava a Deus,
3 About three o'clock one afternoon he saw plainly in a vision an angel come in and say to him, "Cornelius."
3 cerca da hora nona do dia, viu claramente em visão um anjo de Deus, que se dirigia para ele e lhe dizia: Cornélio!
4 He gazed at him in alarm and asked, "What is it, my Lord?" The angel said to him, "Your prayers and your gifts of charity have come up as an evidence before God.
4 Este, fitando nele os olhos e atemorizado, perguntou: Que é, Senhor? O anjo respondeu-lhe: As tuas orações e as tuas esmolas têm subido para memória diante de Deus;
5 Now send men to Joppa and ask for a man named Simon, who is called Peter.
5 agora, pois, envia homens a Jope e manda chamar a Simão, que tem por sobrenome Pedro;
6 He is the guest of a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside."
6 este se acha hospedado com um certo Simão, curtidor, cuja casa fica à beira-mar. {Ele te dirá o que deves fazer.}
7 When the angel who had been speaking to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a pious soldier of those who were attached to him,
7 Logo que se retirou o anjo que lhe falava, Cornélio chamou dois dos seus domésticos e um piedoso soldado dos que estavam a seu serviço;
8 and, after explaining everything to them, sent them to Joppa.
8 e, havendo contado tudo, os enviou a Jope.
9 On the next day, while they were on the road and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray. It was about noon.
9 No dia seguinte, indo eles seu caminho e estando já perto da cidade, subiu Pedro ao eirado para orar, cerca de hora sexta.
10 He began to feel hungry and wished to eat. While they were preparing food, he fell into a trance
10 E tendo fome, quis comer; mas enquanto lhe preparavam a comida, sobreveio-lhe um êxtase,
11 and saw the heavens opened and something descending like a great sheet being let down to the ground by the four corners.
11 e via o céu aberto e um objeto descendo, como se fosse um grande lençol, sendo baixado pelas quatro pontas sobre a terra,
12 In it were all kinds of fourfooted animals and reptiles and birds of the air.
12 no qual havia de todos os quadrúpedes e répteis da terra e aves do céu.
13 Then a voice came to him, "Rise, Peter, kill and eat."
13 E uma voz lhe disse: Levanta-te, Pedro, mata e come.
14 But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unclean or impure."
14 Mas Pedro respondeu: De modo nenhum, Senhor, porque nunca comi coisa alguma comum e imunda.
15 A second time the voice came to him, "What God has cleansed you must not think unclean."
15 Pela segunda vez lhe falou a voz: Não chames tu comum ao que Deus purificou.
16 This happened a third time, and then immediately the sheet was taken up into the heavens.
16 Sucedeu isto por três vezes; e logo foi o objeto recolhido ao céu.
17 Peter was thinking this over and was at a loss what the vision meant. Just then the men who had been sent by Cornelius, after inquiring for the house of Simon, came to the door
17 Enquanto Pedro refletia, perplexo, sobre o que seria a visão que tivera, eis que os homens enviados por Cornélio, tendo perguntado pela casa de Simão, pararam à porta.
18 and called to know whether Simon called Peter was a guest there.
18 E, chamando, indagavam se ali estava hospedado Simão, que tinha por sobrenome Pedro.
19 While Peter was debating with himself about the vision, the Spirit said, "Here are two men looking for you.
19 Estando Pedro ainda a meditar sobre a visão, o Espírito lhe disse: Eis que dois homens te procuram.
20 Rise and go down and go with them without misgivings, for I have sent them."
20 Levanta-te, pois, desce e vai com eles, nada duvidando; porque eu tos enviei.
21 Peter went down and said to the men, "Here I am \'97 the man you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming?"
21 E descendo Pedro ao encontro desses homens, disse: Sou eu a quem procurais; qual é a causa por que viestes?
22 They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house, and to listen to your words."
22 Eles responderam: O centurião Cornélio, homem justo e temente a Deus e que tem bom testemunho de toda a nação judaica, foi avisado por um santo anjo para te chamar à sua casa e ouvir as tuas palavras.
23 Then he invited them in and entertained them. The next day Peter arose and went away with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
23 Pedro, pois, convidando-os a entrar, os hospedou. No dia seguinte levantou-se e partiu com eles, e alguns irmãos, dentre os de Jope, o acompanharam.
24 On the following day they came to Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had assembled his relatives and his close friends.
24 No outro dia entrou em Cesaréia. E Cornélio os esperava, tendo reunido os seus parentes e amigos mais íntimos.
25 As Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him and falling at his feet did him reverence.
25 Quando Pedro ia entrar, veio-lhe Cornélio ao encontro e, prostrando-se a seus pés, o adorou.
26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, "Stand up; I myself also am a man."
26 Mas Pedro o ergueu, dizendo: Levanta-te, que eu também sou homem.
27 Conversing with him Peter entered the house and found many people assembled.
27 E conversando com ele, entrou e achou muitos reunidos,
28 He said to them, "You understand that it is against our Law for a Jew to be closely associated with a Gentile or to visit him. But God has taught me not to call any person common or unclean.
28 e disse-lhes: Vós bem sabeis que não é lícito a um judeu ajuntar-se ou chegar-se a estrangeiros; mas Deus mostrou-me que a nenhum homem devo chamar comum ou imundo;
29 Therefore when I was sent for I came without making any objection. So now I ask, For what reason have you sent for me?"
29 pelo que, sendo chamado, vim sem objeção. Pergunto pois: Por que razão mandastes chamar-me?
30 Cornelius said, "Four days ago, at this hour, I was offering the three o'clock prayer in my house, when suddenly a man stood before me in shining dress
30 Então disse Cornélio: Faz agora quatro dias que eu estava orando em minha casa à hora nona, e eis que diante de mim se apresentou um homem com vestiduras resplandecentes,
31 and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your gifts of charity have been remembered before God.
31 e disse: Cornélio, a tua oração foi ouvida, e as tuas esmolas estão em memória diante de Deus.
32 Send to Joppa and call for Simon who is surnamed Peter. He is a guest in the house of Simon a tanner near the sea'
32 Envia, pois, a Jope e manda chamar a Simão, que tem por sobrenome Pedro; ele está hospedado em casa de Simão, curtidor, à beira-mar.
33 Immediately I sent to you and you have done well in coming. Now here we all are in God's presence to hear all that the Lord has commanded you."
33 Portanto mandei logo chamar-te, e bem fizeste em vir. Agora pois estamos todos aqui presentes diante de Deus, para ouvir tudo quanto te foi ordenado pelo Senhor.
34 Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I understand that God is not partial,
34 Então Pedro, tomando a palavra, disse: Na verdade reconheço que Deus não faz acepção de pessoas;
35 but in every nation whoever reverences him and lives righteously is acceptable to him.
35 mas que lhe é aceitável aquele que, em qualquer nação, o teme e pratica o que é justo.
36 As to the message which he sent to the children of Israel telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ \'97 who is Lord of all \'97
36 A palavra que ele enviou aos filhos de Israel, anunciando a paz por Jesus Cristo {este é o Senhor de todos}.
37 you know the story that spread through all Judaea. It began in Galilee after the baptism which John proclaimed.
37 esta palavra, vós bem sabeis, foi proclamada por toda a Judéia, começando pela Galiléia, depois do batismo que João pregou,
38 You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were harassed by the Devil, for God was with him.
38 concernente a Jesus de Nazaré, como Deus o ungiu com o Espírito Santo e com poder; o qual andou por toda parte, fazendo o bem e curando a todos os oprimidos do Diabo, porque Deus era com ele.
39 We are witnesses of all that he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They hung him on a cross and so killed him.
39 Nós somos testemunhas de tudo quanto fez, tanto na terra dos judeus como em Jerusalém; ao qual mataram, pendurando-o num madeiro.
40 But God raised him up on the third day and granted that he should become visible,
40 A este ressuscitou Deus ao terceiro dia e lhe concedeu que se manifestasse,
41 not to all the people, but to witnesses previously chosen by God, namely, to us who ate and drank with him after his resurrection from the dead.
41 não a todo povo, mas às testemunhas que Deus antes ordenara; a nós, que comemos e bebemos juntamente com ele depois que ressurgiu dentre os mortos.
42 God commanded us to proclaim to the people and to testify that he is the divinely appointed Judge of the living and the dead.
42 Este nos mandou pregar ao povo, e testificar que ele é o que por Deus foi constituído juiz dos vivos e dos mortos.
43 All of the prophets testify to this, that every one who believes in him obtains forgiveness of sins through his name."
43 A ele todos os profetas dão testemunho de que todo o que nele crê receberá a remissão dos pecados pelo seu nome.
44 While Peter was speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to his message.
44 Enquanto Pedro ainda dizia estas coisas, desceu o Espírito Santo sobre todos os que ouviam a palavra.
45 All the believers who were of the circumcision who had come along with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles,
45 Os crentes que eram de circuncisão, todos quantos tinham vindo com Pedro, maravilharam-se de que também sobre os gentios se derramasse o dom do Espírito Santo;
46 for they heard them speaking with tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter said,
46 porque os ouviam falar línguas e magnificar a Deus.
47 "Can any one forbid water for the baptism of these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?"
47 Respondeu então Pedro: Pode alguém porventura recusar a água para que não sejam batizados estes que também, como nós, receberam o Espírito Santo?
48 And he directed that they should be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain there a few days.
48 Mandou, pois, que fossem batizados em nome de Jesus Cristo. Então lhe rogaram que ficasse com eles por alguns dias.
