1 Gideon’s son Abimelech went to the town of Shechem. All his mother’s relatives lived there. He told them:
1 E Abimeleque, filho de Jerubaal, foi a Siquém, aos irmãos de sua mãe, e falou-lhes e a toda a geração da casa do pai de sua mãe, dizendo:
2 »Ask the men of Shechem: ‘Which is better for you. To have all seventy of Gideon’s sons govern you or to have just one man? Remember that Abimelech is your own flesh and blood.’«
2 Falai, peço-vos, aos ouvidos de todos os cidadãos de Siquém: Qual é melhor para vós, que setenta homens, todos os filhos de Jerubaal, dominem sobre vós, ou que um homem sobre vós domine? Lembrai-vos também de que sou osso vosso e carne vossa.
3 His mother’s relatives talked to the men of Shechem about this for him. The men of Shechem decided to follow Abimelech because: »He is our relative.«
3 Então os irmãos de sua mãe falaram acerca dele perante os ouvidos de todos os cidadãos de Siquém todas aquelas palavras; e o coração deles se inclinou a seguir Abimeleque, porque disseram: É nosso irmão.
4 They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith. Abimelech hired worthless and reckless men to join him.
4 E deram-lhe setenta peças de prata, da casa de Baal-Berite; e com elas alugou Abimeleque uns homens ociosos e levianos, que o seguiram.
5 He went to his father’s house at Ophrah. There on top of a single stone he killed his seventy brothers, Gideon’s sons. Gideon’s youngest son Jotham hid and therefore was not killed.
5 E veio à casa de seu pai, a Ofra, e matou a seus irmãos, os filhos de Jerubaal, setenta homens, sobre uma pedra. Porém Jotão, filho menor de Jerubaal, ficou, porque se tinha escondido.
6 All the men of Shechem and Bethmillo got together and went to the sacred oak tree at Shechem, where they made Abimelech king.
6 Então se ajuntaram todos os cidadãos de Siquém, e toda a casa de Milo; e foram, e constituíram a Abimeleque rei, junto ao carvalho alto que está perto de Siquém.
7 Jotham heard about this. He stood on top of Mount Gerizim and shouted out to them: »Men of Shechem, listen to me and God may listen to you!
7 E, dizendo-o a Jotão, foi e pôs-se no cume do monte de Gerizim, e levantou a sua voz, e clamou e disse-lhes: Ouvi-me, cidadãos de Siquém, e Deus vos ouvirá a vós;
8 »The trees went out to anoint a king over them. They said to the olive tree: ‘Be our king.’
8 Foram uma vez as árvores a ungir para si um rei, e disseram à oliveira: Reina tu sobre nós.
9 »‘The olive tree answered: ‘I would have to stop producing my oil in order to govern you. My oil is used to honor gods and human beings.’
9 Porém a oliveira lhes disse: Deixaria eu a minha gordura, que Deus e os homens em mim prezam, e iria pairar sobre as árvores?
10 »‘Then the trees said to the fig tree: ‘Come and be our king.’
10 Então disseram as árvores à figueira: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós.
11 »‘The fig tree replied: ‘I would have to stop producing my good sweet fruit that I may govern you.’
11 Porém a figueira lhes disse: Deixaria eu a minha doçura, o meu bom fruto, e iria pairar sobre as árvores?
12 »‘Then the trees spoke to the grapevine: ‘You come and be our king.’
12 Então disseram as árvores à videira: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós.
13 »‘But the vine answered: ‘I could not govern you for I would have to stop producing my wine. It makes gods and human beings happy.’
13 Porém a videira lhes disse: Deixaria eu o meu mosto, que alegra a Deus e aos homens, e iria pairar sobre as árvores?
14 »‘So then all the trees said to the thorn bush: ‘You come and be our king!«
14 Então todas as árvores disseram ao espinheiro: Vem tu, e reina sobre nós.
15 »‘The thorn bush answered: ‘If you really want to make me your king, then come and take shelter in my shade. If you do not, fire will blaze out of my thorny branches and burn up the cedars of Lebanon.’
15 E disse o espinheiro às árvores: Se, na verdade, me ungis por rei sobre vós, vinde, e confiai-vos debaixo da minha sombra; mas, se não, saia fogo do espinheiro que consuma os cedros do Líbano.
16 »‘Think about it, Jotham continued: ‘Were you really honest and sincere when you made Abimelech king? Have you respected Gideon’s memory? Did you treat his family properly, as his actions deserved?
16 Agora, pois, se é que em verdade e sinceridade agistes, fazendo rei a Abimeleque, e se bem fizestes para com Jerubaal e para com a sua casa, e se com ele usastes conforme ao merecimento das suas mãos
17 »‘My father fought for you. He risked his life to deliver you from the Midianites.
17 (Porque meu pai pelejou por vós, e desprezou a sua vida, e vos livrou da mão dos midianitas;
18 »‘Today you turned against my father’s family. You killed his sons, seventy men on a single stone. And this because Abimelech, his son by his servant woman, is your relative, you have made him king of Shechem.
18 Porém vós hoje vos levantastes contra a casa de meu pai, e matastes a seus filhos, setenta homens, sobre uma pedra; e a Abimeleque, filho da sua serva, fizestes reinar sobre os cidadãos de Siquém, porque é vosso irmão);
19 »‘If you have acted in truth and sincerity today to Gideon and his family then be happy with Abimelech and let him be happy with you.
19 Pois, se em verdade e sinceridade usastes com Jerubaal e com a sua casa hoje, alegrai-vos com Abimeleque, e também ele se alegre convosco.
20 »‘But if not, may fire blaze out from Abimelech and burn up the men of Shechem and Bethmillo. May fire blaze out from the men of Shechem and Bethmillo and burn Abimelech up.’«
20 Mas, se não, saia fogo de Abimeleque, e consuma aos cidadãos de Siquém, e a casa de Milo; e saia fogo dos cidadãos de Siquém, e da casa de Milo, que consuma a Abimeleque.
21 Jotham ran away to Beer and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
21 Então partiu Jotão, e fugiu e foi para Beer; e ali habitou por medo de Abimeleque, seu irmão.
22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
22 Havendo, pois, Abimeleque dominado três anos sobre Israel,
23 God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem. The men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
23 Enviou Deus um mau espírito entre Abimeleque e os cidadãos de Siquém; e estes se houveram aleivosamente contra Abimeleque;
24 That the cruelty done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might be avenged on their brother Abimelech. For he killed them and the men of Shechem helped him kill his brother.
24 Para que a violência feita aos setenta filhos de Jerubaal viesse, e o seu sangue caísse sobre Abimeleque, seu irmão, que os matara, e sobre os cidadãos de Siquém, que fortaleceram as mãos dele para matar a seus irmãos;
25 And the men of Shechem set men in ambush on the top of the mountains. They robbed all who came along that way. This was reported to Abimelech.
25 E os cidadãos de Siquém puseram contra ele quem lhe armasse emboscadas sobre os cumes dos montes; e a todo aquele que passava pelo caminho junto a eles o assaltavam; e contou-se isso a Abimeleque.
26 Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
26 Veio também Gaal, filho de Ebede, com seus irmãos, e passaram a Siquém; e os cidadãos de Siquém confiaram nele.
27 They all went to their vineyards and picked the grapes. Then they made wine from them, and held a festival. They went to the temple of their god, where they ate and drank and made fun of Abimelech.
27 E saíram ao campo, e vindimaram as suas vinhas, e pisaram as uvas, e fizeram festas; e foram à casa de seu deus, e comeram, e beberam, e amaldiçoaram a Abimeleque.
28 Gaal said: »Who is Abimelech and who is Schechem that we should serve them? Who is he? The son of Gideon! And Zebul takes orders from him, but why should we serve him? Be loyal to your ancestor Hamor, the one who founded your clan!
28 E disse Gaal, filho de Ebede: Quem é Abimeleque, e quem é Siquém, para que o sirvamos? Não é porventura filho de Jerubaal? E não é Zebul o seu mordomo? Servi antes aos homens de Hamor, pai de Siquém; pois, por que razão serviríamos nós a ele?
29 »If I were leading this people I would get rid of Abimelech! I would tell him to: call out your army, come on out and fight!«
29 Ah! se este povo estivera na minha mão, eu expulsaria a Abimeleque. E diria a Abimeleque: Multiplica o teu exército, e sai.
30 The ruler of the city, Zebul, became angry when he heard what Gaal said.
30 E, ouvindo Zebul, o maioral da cidade, as palavras de Gaal, filho de Ebede, se acendeu a sua ira;
31 He sent messengers to Abimelech at Arumah. They said: »Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem. They are not going to let you enter into the city.
31 E enviou astutamente mensageiros a Abimeleque, dizendo: Eis que Gaal, filho de Ebede, e seus irmãos vieram a Siquém, e eis que eles estão sublevando esta cidade contra ti.
32 »You and your men should move by night and hide in the fields.
32 Levanta-te, pois, de noite, tu e o povo que tiveres contigo, e põe emboscadas no campo.
33 »Get up early in the morning at sunrise and attack the city. When he and the people who are with him come out against you do what you can against them.«
33 E levanta-te pela manhã ao sair o sol, e dá de golpe sobre a cidade; e eis que, saindo contra ti, ele e o povo que tiver com ele, faze-lhe como puderes.
34 Abimelech and all his troops, in four companies, took up concealed positions at night against Shechem.
34 Levantou-se, pois, Abimeleque, e todo o povo que com ele havia, de noite, e puseram emboscadas a Siquém, com quatro tropas.
35 Abimelech and his men saw Gaal come out and stand at the city gate. So they got up from their hiding places.
35 E Gaal, filho de Ebede, saiu, e pôs-se à entrada da porta da cidade; e Abimeleque, e todo o povo que com ele havia, se levantou das emboscadas.
36 Gaal saw them and said to Zebul: »There are men coming down from the mountaintops!« Zebul answered: »They are not men. They are only shadows on the mountains.«
36 E, vendo Gaal aquele povo, disse a Zebul: Eis que desce gente dos cumes dos montes. Zebul, ao contrário, lhe disse: As sombras dos montes vês como se fossem homens.
37 Gaal responded: »Do you see? There are men coming down from the top of the mountain. Some are coming along the road from the big tree of Meonenim big tree of magic!«
37 Porém Gaal ainda tornou a falar, e disse: Eis ali desce gente do meio da terra, e uma tropa vem do caminho do carvalho de Meonenim.
38 Zebul said to him: »Where is all your big talk now? You asked why we should serve this man Abimelech. These are the men you made fun of. You go fight them!«
38 Então lhe disse Zebul: Onde está agora a tua boca, com a qual dizias: Quem é Abimeleque, para que o sirvamos? Não é este porventura o povo que desprezaste? Sai pois, peço-te, e peleja contra ele.
39 Gaal led the men of Shechem out to fight Abimelech.
39 E saiu Gaal à vista dos cidadãos de Siquém, e pelejou contra Abimeleque.
40 Abimelech chased Gaal, and Gaal ran away. Many were wounded at the city gate.
40 E Abimeleque o perseguiu porquanto fugiu de diante dele; e muitos feridos caíram até à entrada da porta da cidade.
41 Abimelech lived in Arumah. Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of Shechem. They could no longer live there.
41 E Abimeleque ficou em Aruma. E Zebul expulsou a Gaal e a seus irmãos, para que não pudessem habitar em Siquém.
42 The next day it was reported to Abimelech that the people of Shechem were planning to go out into the fields.
42 E sucedeu no dia seguinte que o povo saiu ao campo; disto foi avisado Abimeleque.
43 He divided his men into three groups. They hid in the fields, waiting. When he saw the people come out of the city, he came out of hiding to kill them.
43 Então tomou o povo, e o repartiu em três tropas, e pôs emboscadas no campo; e olhou, e eis que o povo saía da cidade, e levantou-se contra ele, e o feriu.
44 Abimelech and his group rushed forward to guard the city gate. The other two companies attacked the people in the fields and killed all of them.
44 Porque Abimeleque, e as tropas que com ele havia, romperam de improviso, e pararam à entrada da porta da cidade; e as outras duas tropas deram de improviso sobre todos quantos estavam no campo, e os feriram.
45 The fighting lasted all day. Abimelech captured the city and killed its people. He tore down the city and covered the ground with salt.
45 E Abimeleque pelejou contra a cidade todo aquele dia, e tomou a cidade, e matou o povo que nela havia; e assolou a cidade, e a semeou de sal.
46 When all the men in the fort at Shechem heard this, they sought safety in the stronghold of the temple of Baal-Berith.
46 O que ouvindo todos os cidadãos da torre de Siquém, entraram na fortaleza, na casa do deus Berite.
47 Abimelech was informed that they had gathered there,
47 E contou-se a Abimeleque que todos os cidadãos da torre de Siquém se haviam congregado.
48 He traveled up to Mount Zalmon with his men. He took an ax, cut a limb off a tree, and put it on his shoulder. He told his men to hurry and do the same thing.
48 Subiu, pois, Abimeleque ao monte Salmom, ele e todo o povo que com ele havia; e Abimeleque tomou na sua mão um machado, e cortou um ramo de árvore, e o levantou, e pô-lo ao seu ombro, e disse ao povo, que com ele havia: O que me vistes fazer apressai-vos a fazê-lo assim como eu.
49 So everyone cut off a tree limb. They followed Abimelech and piled the wood up against the stronghold. They set the fort on fire. All the people of the fort died. About a thousand men and women died.
49 Assim, pois, cada um de todo o povo, também cortou o seu ramo e seguiu a Abimeleque; e pondo os ramos junto da fortaleza, queimaram-na a fogo com os que nela estavam, de modo que todos os da torre de Siquém morreram, uns mil homens e mulheres.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez. They surrounded that city, and captured it.
50 Então Abimeleque foi a Tebes e a sitiou, e a tomou.
51 There was a strong tower there. The men and women in the city, including the leaders, ran to it. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof.
51 Havia, porém, no meio da cidade uma torre forte; e todos os homens e mulheres, e todos os cidadãos da cidade se refugiaram nela, e fecharam após si as portas, e subiram ao eirado da torre.
52 When Abimelech attacked the tower he went to the door to set the tower on fire.
52 E Abimeleque veio até à torre, e a combateu; e chegou-se até à porta da torre, para a incendiar.
53 A woman threw a millstone down on his head and fractured his skull.
53 Porém uma mulher lançou um pedaço de uma mó sobre a cabeça de Abimeleque; e quebrou-lhe o crânio.
54 He quickly called the young man who was carrying his weapons and told him: »Draw your sword and kill me. I do not want it said that a woman killed me.« The young man ran him through with his sword and he died.
54 Então chamou logo ao moço, que levava as suas armas, e disse-lhe: Desembainha a tua espada, e mata-me; para que não se diga de mim: Uma mulher o matou. E o moço o atravessou e ele morreu.
55 The Israelites went home as soon as they saw that Abimelech was dead.
55 Vendo, pois, os homens de Israel que Abimeleque já era morto, foram-se cada um para o seu lugar.
56 Thus God paid Abimelech back for the crime that he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers.
56 Assim Deus fez tornar sobre Abimeleque o mal que tinha feito a seu pai, matando a seus setenta irmãos.
57 God also made the men of Shechem suffer for their wickedness. Jotham, Gideon’s son, said they would when he cursed them.
57 Como também todo o mal dos homens de Siquém fez tornar sobre a cabeça deles; e a maldição de Jotão, filho de Jerubaal, veio sobre eles.
