¹ Respondeu mais Eliú e disse:

² »Do you think this to be just? You say: I am in the right before God.

² Tens por direito dizeres: Maior é a minha justiça do que a de Deus?

³ »If you ask: What advantage do I have? How am I better off than if I had sinned?

³ Porque disseste: De que te serviria? Que proveito tiraria mais do que do meu pecado?

⁴ »I will answer you and your friends with you.

⁴ Eu te darei resposta, a ti e aos teus amigos contigo.

⁵ Look at the heavens, observe the clouds and see. They are higher than you.

⁵ Atenta para os céus e vê; e contempla as mais altas nuvens, que estão mais altas do que tu.

⁶ »If you have sinned, what do you accomplish against him? If your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to him?

⁶ Se pecares, que efetuarás contra ele? Se as tuas transgressões se multiplicarem, que lhe farás?

⁷ »If you are righteous, what do you give to him? What does he receive from your hand?

⁷ Se fores justo, que lhe darás, ou que receberá da tua mão?

⁸ »Your wickedness affects others like you, and your righteousness, other human beings.

⁸ A tua impiedade faria mal a outro tal como tu; e a tua justiça aproveitaria a um filho do homem.

⁹ »Because of the multitude of oppressions people cry out. They call for help because of the arm of the mighty.

⁹ Por causa da grandeza da opressão eles clamam; eles clamam por causa do braço dos grandes.

¹⁰ »However no one says: Where is God my Maker, who gives strength in the night?

¹⁰ Mas ninguém diz: Onde está Deus, que me fez? Que dá salmos entre a noite?

¹¹ »Who teaches us more than the animals of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?

¹¹ Que nos faz mais doutos do que os animais da terra e nos faz mais sábios do que as aves dos céus?

¹² »They cry out, but he does not answer, because of the pride of evildoers.

¹² Clamam, porém ele não responde, por causa da arrogância dos maus.

¹³ »Surely God does not hear an empty cry, nor does the Almighty regard it.

¹³ Certo é que Deus não ouvirá a vaidade, nem atentará para ela o Todo-Poderoso.

¹⁴ »How much less when you say that you do not see him, that the case is before him, and you are waiting for him!

¹⁴ E quanto ao que disseste, que o não verás, juízo há perante ele; por isso, espera nele.

¹⁵ »Because his anger does not punish, and he does not greatly heed transgression,

¹⁵ Mas agora, porque a sua ira ainda se não exerce, nem grandemente considera a arrogância,

¹⁶ »Job opens his mouth in empty talk. He multiplies words without knowledge.«
